Sand, leaves and the mammoth

Hiho everyone,

The team's creation process

To be honest this team was basically inspired by another strong and
simply great team on this site - Team Hawaiian Air

http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3461260

After a bunch of rather unsuccessful and non-fluent team-ideas I tested
out, I tried the team above for a while to see how it works and I was
pretty excited how and how well it performed.
But since I prefer to create teams on my own other than to just copypaste them,
I tried to build something that could keep up a similar offensive flow,
while being more suited to my personal playstyle.

The Team

The idea behind, is to keep up a constantly strong offensive pressure, that
limits the opponent's chances to setup, while having good answers to most of the
common threats and tactics of the current OU-Metagame,
or at least provide opportunities to work around them.

I borrowed Landorus and with minor adjustment Mamoswine from the hawaiian air team since i felt,
both of them would be great additions to my team as well.
I decided to add in Tyranitar, not only because it is an awesome offensive
force, but also to be able to override opposing weather and last but not least sand is one of the
easiest ways to break Dnites Multiscale, which puts him instantly into KO-Range
of Mamo's Iceshard (which is good I guess).
In addition Landorus likes sand too.
I now have a grass weak and an even more glaring water weak, so I added in Roserade to fix this.
Lucario as my second priority-user and Latios as additional coverage to
the team core's elemental weaks made the team complete.

The Team Members in Detail

Tyranitar@Choice Scarf
Sandstream
Naive
80 HP / 136 Att / 40 Def / 252 Spe

Crunch
Rock Slide
Fire Blast
Superpower

This mixed-Scarf-Tar is mainly designed to mess up its common counters.
It outspeeds lots of things like Gengar/Starmie/non-scarfed Latios to name a few
and hits them hard with Crunch. Superpower is mostly vs.
other Tars and Blissey but it could also do some harm to Rotom-W.
The EV Spread is designed to survive a Bullet Punch from CB Scizor, that
gets KOed by Fire Blast in return, which might be somewhat unexpected, since offensive Tars
usually don't have the bulk to take a BP.
Tar is my lead vs. non-weather teams to set up sand and possibly get a surprise KO
on something that expected to outspeed/counter it.
I replaced Earthquake with Rock Slide to limit Gyarados' chances to setup on my team,
the higher accuracy and the flinch rate, that is at least remotely interesting with Scarftars high
speed, let it be a better option than edge on this set IMHO.

Landorus@Life-Orb
Sand Force
Naive
252 Att / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

Earthquake
HP Ice
U-Turn
Explosion

Landorus is 1:1 from the "Hawaiian Air", since I really like this set.
The big difference is, that while the original landorus was meant to
counter opposing sand and had to live without the sand force boost during
the majority of matches, this team gains him a powerfully boosted Earthquake during most matchups.
U-Turn is to scout and gain momentum, while Explosion off Landorus' big attack stat is a
either a last-ditch move, or -more suitable- a strong option to immediatly take something out
the rest of the team can't handle well.
Finally HP Ice is vs. opposing Landorus and Gliscor, to prevent him from
being walled to easily.

410.png

Roserade@Life-Orb
Natural Cure
Timid
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Sleep Powder
Leaf Storm
HP Fire
Weatherball

I struggled a bit to find something that poses a threat to rain teams, covers the grass weak
of Tar and Mamoswine and offers enough destructive power on its own.
I ended up taking Celebi and Roserade into consideration, and I decided to add in the latter,
since it is not weak to u-turn, capable of dishing out lots of damage to rain teams, a useful rotom-w counter and
- on a small sidenote - able to absorb toxic/(spikes).
Sleep powder is a useful disabling move, despite its low accuracy and
stabbed leaf storm is a brute attack that can wreck havoc to grass weak pokes even if used consecutivly.
Hp Fire is added to cover other grass types and steels, that might resist
Roserades other moves and weatherball is a very interesting option, since it is a 100 BP rock type move in the
sand which means roserade can not only damage Dnite and Gyarados seriously, but also hit incoming fire types
super-effectively. Under other weather conditions the move seems to be less effective,
but it still might have its (situational) uses.

478.png

Mamoswine@Life-Orb
Snow Cloak
Jolly
4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe

Iceshard
Ice Spear
Earthquake
Stealth Rock

The other pokemon taken from the hawaiian team. I don't know why Mamoswine
doesn't see more use in the current ou-metagame, since it's prio ice move means an
almost ensured stop to Dragonites or Landorus sweeps, which both are quite dominant forces in OU.
In addition, the icy mammoth is not slow, sports a powerful
stabbed earthquake from a solid 130 attackbase and has enough bulk to
take a hit from most things.
Icicle spear is useful to break through subs and Dnites multiscale if
necessary, while SR on the last slot is an option, that doesn't fit on any
other team member and is more than useful vs. sun and hail-teams, but
this team does not need rocks that desperately otherwise.

453.png

Lucario@Life-Orb
Inner Focus
Adamant
4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe

Swords Dance
Extremespeed
Bullet Punch
Close Combat

Lucario is my second priority user, a great revenger and my one and only
team member capable of boosting its attack stat actively. Lucarios typing
allow him to take a hit from a lot of things (or force them out),
which often grants him a free SD-turn. But even without boost, or if
a fast priority move is absolutely needed, its solid attack base + LifeOrb
ensures that someone takes a good chunk of damage. Close Combat in the
last slot is a strong non-priority stab vs. slower opponents and
especially Ferrothorn and Magnezone/Heatran switch-ins.

381.png

Latios@Life-Orb
Levitate
Timid
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Draco Meteor
HP Fire
Surf
Recover

Latios on the last slot was choosen, mainly because of his numerous
resists, that allow him to switch in a lot of things and handle
threats the other team members can't too well.
The damaging moves are chosen to have a good offensive coverage and
recover, while being the least used move on this set is helpful to
negate the sandstream and LO-recoil damage.

That's it, the team runs very well during the test-matches,
but I'm sure there will be room for improvements.

Criticism, ideas rates are very welcome !

Thanks for reading !

Ok, here are my suggestions:

First, I would suggest putting Stone Edge on Tyranitar over Earthquake. Earthquake doesn't do much that Stone Edge or Superpower can't do, and Stone Edge also hits Dragonite and Gyarados hard. Stone Edge still does plenty of damage to Infernape (69 - 82% about), and Latios also pretty much hard-counters Infernape anyway.

For Landorus, I would try out stone Edge over Explosion, because Stone Edge covers certain Pokemon like Gyarados that Landorus otherwise couldn't hit.

For Roserade, you could consider swapping it out for Shaymin. Sure, Shaymin doesn't have the special attack stat of Roserade or Sleep Powder, but Shaymin has greater bulk, especially on the physical side. Shaymin also has Seed Flare, which has a 40% chance of halving the opponent's special defense. Shaymin has decent coverage options as well, like Earth Power and HP fire, and also gets moves like Healing Wish and Leech Seed. Your team doesn't get affected too much from Toxic Spikes either.

Your team isn't too bad; however right now Gyarados and Dragonite can be problems to most of this team.

I think you are abusing LO too much. I suggest a different set on your Roserade. Try running a defensive set with hazards. Max HP and Speed, with Sleep Powder, Spikes, Leaf Storm, and HP Fire. You can even run Rest over Sleep Powder to heal off Sand damage. Another option is trying out Specs Latios. The sheer power it brings to your team will hugely benefit you. Spamming an 210 BP move coming off a +1 Base 130 stat is amazing. The final choice is between Trick or Psyshock in the last slot, over your current Recover. Hope I helped, and GL

Thank you guys for your rates !

@steel dragons

I did not encounter Gyarados a lot during my test games, but I agree that
he is a big problem to my team, especially with the Sub/DD Set.
Stone Edge > EQ on Tar is something I might try out, but I do not like the
20% miss rate here, and it doesn't help much if Gyarados manages to get a sub up before.

Dragonite however has not been a big problem during any of the matches.
I will try Shaymin > Roserade and see how it performs, but to be honest
Roserade has been a pretty strong point on this team, and I don't think it is
absolutely necessary to replace it.

@dcae
Some interesting suggestions, and I will try them out. Funnily
I already fooled around with a natural cure/rest set for roserade,
but dumped it in favor of a more offensive one, but I might give it
a try again.
Well for Latios, spamming a 210 BP move from nearly +1 isn't that worse
and having the opportunity to switch moves and recover sand/recoil
damage has been quite valuable up to now. But again, I will try that out,
since especially Trick could be a good option to handle some things
more easily.
The LO recoil on this team isn't that of an issue, since the games are
mostly "quick and dirty" and nearly any member on this team is
easily able to trade itself for more than 1vs1, even with LO recoil.
I fear, that adding in a second choice item might give my opponent an
easier time to come into play.

However I need some help with the Gyarados issue, since it poses a
big threat to the team.

Seems like you suffer a lot Scizor, 'cause Landorus its a LO, Tytar,Roserade,Mamo and Latios are heavy damaged by Bulletpunch...Ok you can setup with Lucario on a CBZor but if the set up goes badly, well, you loose the match !
Try tu put a counter for him...
