[SET]
Sweeper (Sandshrew-Alola) @ Eviolite
Ability: Slush Rush
Level: 5
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 36 Def / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Triple Axel
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin / Ice Shard
- Swords Dance / Ice Shard
[SET COMMENTS]
Alolan Sandshrew carves out a neat role in LC as both a sweeper and utility Pokemon. Having Ice/Steel typing makes it one of the few reliable Flying resists in the tier. Triple Axel gives it strong STAB coverage and Earthquake hits the Fire- and Steel- types that Triple Axel cannot, and building off of those it has a few useful options depending on team needs: Rapid Spin for entry hazard control while pushing its Speed to 21 which makes it faster than the entire unboosted metagame, Swords Dance to boost Attack by 2 stages and sweep late-game, or Ice Shard to pick off weakened threats like Vullaby. Tera Fairy is preferred because it flips the script on Fighting- and Dark-types like Mienfoo and Vullaby, letting Alolan Sandshrew stay in where it normally couldn’t. It has the option to run goggles and shutdown Spore from the opposing Foongus and setup on it.
Alolan Sandshrew shines against Ground-, Grass-, and Flying-types, often forcing awkward Terastallizations like Water and Steel from staples like Foongus, Mudbray, or Mienfoo. This opens the door for teammates such as Elekid or Alolan Diglett. Pokemon that appreciate Rapid Spin support, such as Wingull and Vullaby, also pair very well with it. On the flip side, it really struggles with Mienfoo, Ground-types like Alolan Diglett and Mudbray, and tech coverage like Heat Wave Vullaby. Pairing it with reliable checks to these threats such as Foongus, Grookey, or Chinchou helps cover those weaknesses and gives Sandshrew the breathing room to do its job.
