XY OU Sandstorm Showdown

Hello everyone! My name is Kinny and this is my first RMT thread. I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could offer any form of criticism or advice for structuring my team. Without any further adieu, I give you my team!

First Look:

Tyranitar, The Special Assault Tank / Special Attack Slayer

tyranitar.gif

Ability: Sand Stream
Item: Assault Vest
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Ice Beam
- Superpower

Tyranitar is used as the Special Attack soaker in my team. The investment in Sp. Def and HP gives him the best stats to absorb Special Attacks with ease. His Sandstream ability and Assault Vest also contribute to his capacity to tank Special Attacks.

My team is closely related to a Stall Party in which I use the effects of Sandstorm as a source of indirect damage (6%). Tyranitar fulfills this purpose and does more than just that. Tyranitar also has the brawn to kill popular Special Attackers such as Gengar, Latios, Latias, Gothitelle, and others. His frightening Pursuit, can OHKO these threats if they choose to switch out. You are pretty much their bane because they will die no matter what they try to do. Minus the Keldeo, of course. (:

My choice of moves is pretty straight-forward. I use Stone Edge as one of my primary STAB moves. I feel that the damage of Rock Slide is lackluster and the effects of flinch will not work. I specifically chose Tyranitar to have a Sassy nature because I did not want to sacrifice power in his Ice Beam. Ice Beam is needed to cover potential threats such as Landorus and Gliscor. Besides, his Speed is not needed for the purpose that he performs. As for my last move, I chose Superpower. Superpower allows you to hit Heatran extremely hard. Also, the loss in stats due to the effects of Superpower will not affect your ability to tank more Special Attacks from Heatran.

Garchomp, The Punching Bag / Full Contact Please!

garchomp.gif

Ability: Rough Skin
Item: Rocky Helmet
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock

Garchomp is used as the Lead in my party. His bulk makes it possible to safely set up Stealth Rock and no one at a moment's notice will know what he will do. Besides being the party's lead, Garchomp serves as one of my primary Physical Walls. Garchomp with no investment into Attack still has the capability to destroy Dragonite and other creatures who are susceptible to his Outrage. His play-style is basically to tank contact hits and throw back punches.

What makes this Garchomp set so great is that it can be used as a death fodder to take out 7/24 of a Pokemon's total health if you have a slither of health and eat a contact move. With the addition of Outrage, you can tank a +1 Dragonite's Outrage and OHKO it with your own Outrage (provided Dragonite was hurt by SR or affected by SS). Also, be weary of locking yourself to an unpleasant situation due to Outrage.

The choice of Fire Blast in this set is for crippling threats such as Scizor and Ferrothorn who think they could set-up on you. Fire Blast also scares off Skarmory. Fire Fang is kind of lackluster since the base is fairly low and most Steel-Types have considerable defensive bulk for a un-invested Garchomp to do damage. Fire Blast is somewhat of a gamble due to its Accuracy, but it is your best option in terms of effectiveness in the metagame.

Landorus, The One that Just Hurts

landorus-incarnate.gif

Ability: Sheer Force
Item: Life Orb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Psychic

0 Attack IV = Take less damage from Foul Play.

What can I say? This thing really hurts. I primarily use Landorus to inflict monstrous amounts of damage to other Pokemon. I wish I could say more about him, but his set is pretty straight-forward for striking a crippled team. I generally use him to answer to Venasaur or Conkeldurr's wrath. He also does an excellent job at inflicting damage to those who are prone to his Earth Power.

Besides the strength that he brings to the table, Landorus has exceptional typing which gives him a couple immunities. The ability to be immune to Electric and Ground moves is a big plus! Talk about throwing out some outpredicts! My mind is a bit empty about what else to say about him, so let's move on!

Scizor, The Raid Boss

scizor.gif

Ability: Light Metal
Item: Scizorite
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Atk / 176 SpD
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off
- Roost
- Swords Dance

This is not my own unique spread for EVs. The spread can be found in the Smogon DEX. The spread is to allow Scizor to set up on specific threats, mainly M-Gardevoir. I use Scizor as a Bulky Sweeper due to his increased defenses after Mega Evolution. With such a bulk, it would be a shame not to use it to your advantage to set up Swords Dance and sweep. His use is a bit technical unlike his Platinum flagship set, but the payoff is rewarding.

Light Metal is generally used to take less damage from Low Kick and Grass Knot on a switch-in. You don't have to worry too much about Technician since you will acquire it through Mega Evolution. In regards to the moves, Bullet Punch is a must. It is what makes Scizor who he is. Knock Off in this set is to disrupt any users who carry an item. It also gives Scizor decent coverage in which he could just hit about everything for neutral. I am still exploring the strengths of M-Scizor, so please let me know what you think about his usefulness! (:

Gastrodon, The Salty Slug Who Was Punched

gastrodon-west.gif

Ability: Storm Drain
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Earth Power
- Recover
- Toxic

Just look at this thing. It looks so derpy. I'd pour salt over it and watch him squeal, but he serves to be quite useful for my team. Gastrodon does an excellent job at absorbing Water-moves and taking physical damage. His use of Scald to burn physical attackers is his purpose, but it is gimmicky and depends on chance (30%). He also has Toxic to destroy any annoying Walls and Recover allows him to stall. The use of Leftovers is just to better his sustain. I am still learning how to use him effectively.

Terrakion, the Brutal Boxer

terrakion.gif

Ability: Justified
Item: Choice Scarf
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- X-Scissor

Terrakion is a force to be reckoned with. He will destroy anything that does not resist him. He has a wide array of moves that allows him to cover for a variety of situations. I slapped a Choice Scarf on him because he needs the extra Speed to outspeed potential threats. My favorite thing about Terrakion is that he holds a STAB Fighting-move. I cannot express my love for such an amazing Pokemon. X-Scissor is to cover for any Grass-types that try to wall you off and particularly for Latios and Latias. Overall, he does quite a good job in revenge killing.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my thread. I appreciate your help and dedication in reading all the stuff I have to say. If anyone could test the effectiveness of my Party, that would be cool too! (:

Hey, nice team! Here are my suggestions:

Earthquake over Ice Beam on AV T-tar. It provides you more coverage and allows you to run a full physical set. Ice Beam does not OHKO Lando-T or Gliscor, so they will beat you 1-on-1 anyways (unless you catch them on the switch). EQ allows you take on Heatran, Excadrill, Lucario and generally gives T-tar more coverage.

Dragon Claw over Outrage on Garchomp allows you to hit consistently and make sure Fairies can't come in and set up if you're locked into it.

Your team is semi-stall, so running a Defogger would be advisable. Scizor is great as a Bulky Defogger, being able to hit hard and clear Hazards simultaneously. Try this set:

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off/U-Turn

Lastly, Quagsire over Gastrodon can be used as Quagsire can stop set-up sweepers, however then you lose the water immunity. Here's the set if you want to try it:

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

Hope it helps!

Puzzle King

Sorry for the late reply! Running a Quagsire does sound pretty nice. I was a bit iffy on either running Gastrodon or Quagsire before. I noticed that my team had a large weakness to Water-type moves so I needed someone to tank it for me. I think that's why I considered Gastrodon in the first place. Anyways, I'll test out the Quagsire set that you recommended above and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the input! (:

I do not like some of these sets here. Assault Vest Tyranitar is a sitting duck and very easy to take advantage of. The current SR Garchomp set is outdated, and while it gets Stealth Rock reliably, it invites Landorus-T / Clefable to set up all over it. Scarf Terrakion does not need Earthquake, X-Scissor is okay since Celebi is becoming more common. I suggest Rock Slide > Earthquake on Terrakion, since Earthquake is not needed, and you get a safer Rock STAB to use when you just need to hit something more reliably than with Stone Edge (like on a Charizard). inI suggest switching Garchomp to a Mixed Life Orb set that beats Ferrothorn and Landorus-T much more reliably.

445.gif

Garchomp @ Life Orb
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 12 Atk / 244 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock

The 12 Atk EVs give you a jump point on Earthquake against Clefable, not that it matters, since you only 2HKO it 37% of the time to begin with.

Assault Vest Tyranitar is a sitting duck for things to set up all over you, especially with no offensive investment, I suggest replacing it with a Choice Scarf Tyranitar. Double Scarf sounds pointless, but Scarf Tyranitar is meant to Pursuit trap things like Gengar and Lati@s before they can even move, and both Gengar and Lati@s threaten your team a lot.

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Crunch
- Superpower

I could critique it a little more, but your team is fine. I would keep your Mega Scizor as is, but with a spread of 248 / 76 Atk / 8 Def / 176 SDef Adamant Nature to avoid being 2HKOd by Adamant LandoT's Earthquake and by Mega Gardevoir's Focus Blast. You really do not need any Defog support, and Defog Mega Scizor is an ass set anyways. I also urge you to keep to ignore Puzzle King's suggestion and keep Gastrodon and not replace it with Quagsire, because Gastrodon is your team's only response to Keldeo. Also, I perceive this team as more like Bulky Offense than Semi-stall, but using Quagsire is an invitation for Keldeo to dismantle this team to begin with.

In short:
Rock Slide > Earthquake Terrakion
Mixed Life Orb Garchomp > Standard SR Garchomp
Choice Scarf > Assault Vest on Tyranitar
Keep Gastrodon

Make these changes and you should be fine. Good luck with the team.

EDIT: I noticed this team has no reliable check to Charizard, if they turn out to be a huge problem, Azumarill or Heatran might fit in place of Mega Scizor.

I'm a bit unsure if changing Garchomp to a more offensive set will benefit me in the long run. My party composition lacks a reliable wall, which was why I initially used Chomp for that purpose. I think changing Tyranitar is good idea. Tyranitar is quite bulky and can check the threats that you mentioned above. Oh, I actually already have Stone Edge on Terrakion. And yep, that Gastrodon seemed to be useful. I will change up my party and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback. (:
