This is my first attempt at a sandstorm team and I wanted some outside opinion.
Tyranitar @ Smooth Rock
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Polish
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
Tyranitar is my sand setter. I chose to use the Smooth Rock as opposed to Tyranitarite because I wanted extended sand. E-quake, Stone Edge, and Crunch are basic coverage moves for T-tar and I run Rock Polish for extra speed if I can get a sweep.
Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Ability: Sand Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance
I've never used Excadrill on a team before, but I was eager to put it on this team. I decided to use Sand Force instead of Sand Rush because Excadrill is actually really fast with full EV investment in speed. After a Swords Dance, Excadrill's Attack reaches a crazy high 810. Earthquake and Iron Head are good STAB moves him and Rock Slide (which also gets a boost from Sand Force) adds coverage for Fire types that are immune to Earthquake. (like Megazard-Y and Talonflame)
Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Aerial Ace
Talonflame was an easy choice. It's two main STAB moves cover nearly all of T-tar's weaknesses. The Choice Band is to get as much power as possible out of Talonflame's attacks. Aerial Ace is to finish off low health Pokemon without taking recoil damage from Brave Bird.
Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Defog
- Roost
- Whirlwind
I needed someone to set up entry hazards on my team and Skarmory's bulk and access to Defog made him an excellent choice. Defog is necessary for Talonflame who won't last long with Stealth Rock's out. I choose to run Stealth Rocks over Spikes because it helps whittle down annoying Fire types.
Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 136 Atk / 152 SpA / 220 Spe
- Hydro Pump
- Shadow Sneak
- U-turn
- Ice Beam
I needed a Water type for coverage reasons and Greninja is fast and powerful. Ice Beam takes care of Grass types, Hydro Pump is for STAB, U-Turn is for a quick get away, and finally, Shadow Sneak is for priority finishing move that also stops silly Rapid Spinners from removing my Rocks.
Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Leech Seed
- Sleep Powder
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
Last and defiantly not least, is my mega. I needed a bulky grass type and had an open mega slot thanks to the Smooth Rock on Tyranitar,so Mega Venusaur was the obvious choice. Originally I was running Synthesis, but I forgot about the drop in recovery in sand so I switched it with Sleep Powder. Sludge Bomb gets rid of silly Fairies and Giga Drain + Leech Seed allows for recovery.
