- Tornadus is the defining Tailwind user in the DOU metagame. Prankster allows Tornadus to set Tailwind with an incredible degree of consistency. This, combined with its high Special Attack and Bleakwind Storm, has made Tornadus a cornerstone in offensive team compositions.
- Bleakwind Storm allows Tornadus to threaten the metagame's numerous common Grass-types, among them Ogerpon-W and Sinistcha.
- Running Focus Sash allows maximum investment into Special Attack and Speed. Critically, having maximum Speed enables Tornadus to outspeed and pressure Ogerpon-W and -H.
- Icy Wind provides another means of speed control. Though normally quite weak, it is able to 2HKO Landorus, one of the most common Pokemon in the metagame. The damage is also significant against the tier's many Focus Sash users, most notably Glimmora, Chien-Pao, and opposing Tornadus, breaking their Focus Sashes while simultaneously dropping their Speed and allowing Tornadus's partner to follow up. This move is most effective against opposing offensive Tailwind-based teams, as stacking both forms of speed control provides the edge against a team with just Tailwind.
- Taunt shuts down many support-oriented Pokemon entirely, preventing them from using highly disruptive moves like Spore, Trick Room, and Tailwind. Though because of Prankster, it is unable to affect Dark-types such as Incineroar and Ting-Lu and is blocked by Armor Tail and Psychic Terrain.
- Sunny Day activates Protosynthesis and boosts Fire-type attackers such as Chi-Yu and Ogerpon-H. Similarly, Rain Dance supports Water-types like Ogerpon-W in addition to increasing the accuracy of Bleakwind Storm and Sandsear Storm. Both of these weather options also have utility in disrupting opposing teams, weakening the corresponding typing and blocking weather-reliant effects like Aurora Veil and Swift Swim.
- Focus Sash's defensive properties allow Tornadus to forgo a defensive Tera type in favor of the utility of the Ghost typing. Tera Ghost's primary value is in evading Fake Out and the less common Extreme Speed, allowing Tornadus to set Tailwind on a critical turn and resume applying offensive pressure afterwards. In practice, however, Tornadus is not a common user of Terastallization, as it's usually more valuable to save it for one of the team's offensive powerhouses.
- As Tailwind is a common part of many teams, it is not uncommon to have your Tailwind essentially neutralized by a foe setting their own. In these Tailwind mirror matchups, it's often advised to try and offset your own Tailwind by a turn or two with the aim of having the Speed advantage after their Tailwind has ended. Opting to use Icy Wind can also provide an advantage during matched Tailwinds by lowering the Speed of both foes.
- Tornadus fits best on teams with offensive Pokemon that need their Speed patched up. Landorus, Gholdengo, and Regidrago are all great examples of offensive powerhouses that find themselves outsped by faster threats such as Chien-Pao and Ogerpon formes. Even slow Pokemon like Iron Hands and Ursaluna-B can greatly benefit from partnering with Tornadus. With some Speed investment, they're able to use the Tailwind to outspeed Landorus and Ogerpon-W while also benefiting from Tornadus's ability to check the Grass-types that trouble them both.
