Scarfed Blastoise: A team of Anti-Meta Original Surprise Sets

Basically when I started making this team, I wanted to include several pokemon that were unpredictable and would catch people off guard on the switch. Two of my main inspirations were scarfed blastoise with water spout and physical tornadus with acrobatics/superpower. I found both sets surprisingly successful in UU so I decided to move them up a notch to the OU metagame to see if they would work well in a rain team.

So without further ado, the amazing (drumroll) team.

Kermit (Politoed) (M) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 SAtk / 248 HP / 8 Spd
Modest Nature
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Politoed is basically here for the rain. I threw in the choice specs set that I basically use on all my rain teams whenever I use a Politoed. Surf in the rain never misses and is powerful as heck. Scores an OHKO on Scizor, Espeon, Lucario (leads that I can think of off the top of my head) and of course everything that's weak to it. It also deals 95.5-99.7% to uninvested Metagross and 83.5-87.7 to uninvested Jirachi. Ice beam is great for predicting Venasaur switch-ins when faced off with Ninetales and focus blast is great for nailing Ferrothorns when your opponent leads with something like Landorus. A great lead with great coverage on my part and is almost never OHKOed with its maximum HP investment. Probably my lead of choice 50% of the time.

Donatello (Blastoise) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk
Timid Nature
- Water Spout
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Grass]

The main man of the team, this scarfed turtle reaches a blazing 420 speed when equipped with a choice scarf and timid nature (who thought turtles could be so fast?). Often ignored by most, Blastoise was actually a starter (which means it has decent stats) and has base 78 speed, which is actually not that slow! Most people view Blastoise as a defensive pokemon and think it'll probably be slow as hell because it's a GODDAMN TURTLE. It's awesome when your opponent stays in with some random mon and have their jaw drop when this blazing turtle outspeeds and smashes their ass with a goddamn water spout. Man water spout under the rain is just plain powerful. Surf, ice beam and hidden power grass are just there to round off the set. I've found scarfed Blastoise extremely useful because it encourages your opponent to switch (predicting the rapid spin or toxic so they switch into a ghost or a steel) which gives it a free water spout which is almost guaranteed to 2HKO everything that comes in. I encourage all of you to try this set out, because the satisfaction this turtle gives when it outspeeds your opponent's Terrakion and smashes its face with water spout is just unbelievable...

tornadus-incarnate.jpg

Katrina (Tornadus) (M) @ Flying Gem
Trait: Prankster
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Acrobatics
- Superpower
- Bulk Up
- Taunt

Another original set I've come across I think watching one of those youtube battles. Physical Tornadus catches lots of players off guard since everyone expects it to be firing off hurricanes since it's on a goddamn rain team. Nope! Acrobatics with flying gem and its base 115 attack packs quite a punch and almost guarantees a 2HKO when followed up by another acrobatics or superpower. Superpower compliments acrobatics really well, as most people think of switching in Heatran/Ferrothorn/Magnezone/some other randomass steel type to take the hurricane. Tornadus can also bulk-up anticipating the switch to one of these steels and then proceed to smash them with a superpower and return to its original attack stat. Taunt shuts down annoying things like Forretress, Jellicent, Whimsicott (OH MY GOD THAT THING IS ANNOYING). The flying/fighting typing really hits a lot of things and works great at forcing switches/nabbing unexpected KOs. My lead 25% of the time when I'm up again annoying ferrothorn/forretress/whimsicotts.

shiny%20pink%20celebi.jpg

Celeri (Celebi) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Leaf Storm/Psychic
- Recover/Psychich

So then I thought to myself, wow, I got 3 things weak to electric and I should probably throw in a defensive/support guy as a pivot. So I decided to bring back good ole 4th gen Celebi. I basically decided on a specially defensive set with rocks and thunder wave. I threw in leaf storm as an attack just so I have some options. I guess Celebi would be more hit and run so I chose that over giga drain, but I don't find there to be much of a difference. Recover is just there to complement t-wave but I don't really use those two moves as much. I chose Celebi over Ferro (which does all these jobs probably just as well) because Celebi stops the ever-present breloom dead in its tracks. Therefore I've considered switching leaf storm or recover for psychic. Any ideas on which I should swap out? My lead of choice 25% of the time.

arterview_volcarona.png

Mothquito (Volcarona) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flame Body
EVs: 4 SDef / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Hurricane
- Substitute

Another cool set I saw on smogon. Basically here to round off my water/grass/fire core. The sub works better than fire blast/giga drain/hp water in my opinion because it prevents Volcarona from getting t-waved/toxiced or taunted. Kind of original in a way I guess cause it differs from the traditional fiery dance/roost one but I guess it's just here to complement my team. Welcome to better suggestions for this slot.

Salamence_Chibi_by_RoadkillFox.jpg

Outrageous! (Salamence) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Jolly Nature
- Outrage
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Aqua Tail

For my last slot I wanted a late game cleaner/scarfer that could outspeed my opponents when we're down to our last mons. Basically a standard moxie-mence set I enjoy using with aqua tail instead of fire blast to hit hippowdowns/gliscors. Welcome to suggestions as well (maybe garchomp?)

Hi. One thing that I can immediately say is that this team definitely requires a spinner. Tentacruel and Starmie are the premier spinners for rain teams, so I'd definitely replace one of your Pokemon, the one that pulls the least weight, with one of them. While half your team hates Stealth Rock, the other half hates Toxic Spikes. Any decent stall or semi-stall team will have no problem with your team as they force switches, racking up damage in the process. You have too many scarf users. Replace one with the spinner I've been talking about and this team will be far better. Props for using a unique set on Blastoise. I'm unsure how viable it is, but if it works for you, then good. :)

Hi there!

This is a pretty coo lrain team you have here, with use of underrated threats such as Physical Tornadus and Scarfed Blastoise, so I'd like to commend you on the use of them in your team! However, there are some flaws in this team, and with my rate, those flaws will not only be ironed out, but this team will reach it's full potential. With all of that said, let's get on to my rate. First up, I would definitely recommend running a Tentacruel over your current choice of Blastoise in this team. With Tentacruel, you not only get a Rapid Spinner that helps Volcarona and Salamence do their jobs much easier, you also get an excellent form of entry Hazards in Toxic Spikes, which helps wear down opposing Pokemon much easier. Up next on your team, I would like to suggest running a spread of 252 HP / 236 SpD / 20 Spe on your Celebi over your current one. With the aftermentioned EV spread, Celebi is able to outspeed Max Speed Timid Magnezone, while still having the Special Bulk it needs to take as many hits as possible. Now, staying on your Celebi, I would like to recommend running U-Turn on it over your current moveslot choice of Thunder Wave. With U-Turn, Celebi becomes an excellent pivot and helps scout for Pokemon looking to KO it with a Pursuit, such as Tyranitar & Scizor. My final suggestion would to be running Hidden Power Water on your Volcarona over your current choice of Substitute. With Hidden Power Water, Volcarona gets an excellent psuedo-STAB that is boosted by Rain, and getting the excellent plus of grabbing the OHKO on Terrakion at +1, and it prevents Heatran from walling him hard. Well, that's all I have to say for now. I hope my advice helped. Have fun and good luck in your future endeavours!
