作为防守型定位，Smogon的海中怪物在NFE分级中悄然潜伏！凭借扎实的防御、不错的速度、以及优秀的中转能力，海刺龙成为分级中对抗长毛猪、炒炒猪和腾蹴小将等强力对手的重要手段。快速折返让海刺龙能够从啪咚猴、卡咪龟以及斧牙龙等抵抗水属性的威胁手中脱身。而睡觉与梦话的组合，则能在海刺龙受到削弱后维持其血量健康。16点的速度努力值使海刺龙能超速炒炒猪。凭借属性一致招式以及拍落，妙蛙草、青藤蛇等草属性宝可梦能够对海刺龙构成威胁，因此在队友选择上，猛火猴与洗翠黏美儿等可以抵抗草属性招式的宝可梦，都是相当优秀的搭配。由于麒麟奇和讲究眼镜多龙奇等特攻手能轻易突破海刺龙较弱的特防，因此巧锻匠与辅助型土龙弟弟等盾牌，也相当受到海刺龙的重视。此外，海刺龙容易被场地伤害快速消耗，所以火箭雀和提布莉姆等可以清除或反制场地伤害的宝可梦，对其续航能力的维持至关重要。最后，斧牙龙以及麒麟奇等破盾手，则能利用海刺龙的中转能力，抓住进攻机会。
