ORAS UU Set-up / Balanced Team

Hi everyone, I've been playing in UU for about 2 months now, and have so far laddered to a peak of approximately 1400 but cannot get any higher. I know that my team has several inherent flaws, such as having a huge stealth rock weakness, an inability to handle bulky waters, and a prone vulnerability to status since it is focused around set-up sweeping.

The member that I'm willing to switch out the most is Crobat or Aerodactyl, since they don't seem to be doing well against bulky teams, and I need something that can counter bulky waters and such. My rating on the ladder is currently hovering around the mid-1200s to the mid-1300s, but the fact that it shifts so much indicates that my team's performance isn't very stable.

Let's get to the team:

Aerodactyl-Mega @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 216 Atk / 40 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Aerial Ace
- Roost
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

This is my mega, and it serves its role as a fast pivot against some prominent threat such as Mega Beedrill and a late-game cleaner. Aerial ace is obviously for the flying-type STAB, and it is boosted by Tough Claws. Roost is for recovery when I have an opportunity to use it. Stone Edge for the rock-type STAB, and Earthquake is for the many Steel- and Electric-types in the tier, such as Empoleon or Mega Ampharos. The EV spread is simple, making it a fast and powerful attacker but also being able to survive some physical hits.

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Ice Beam

This is my physically bulky pivot and stealth rock settler. He, along with my Crobat, often serve as my leads. He's also an emergency check to physical attackers such as Salamence, which is why he has Ice Beam. Stealth rock is obviously for setting up entry hazards. Earthquake is for the ground-type STAB, which hits common Pokemon such as Empoleon for great damage, unless it's carrying a Shuca Berry. Scald is for the water-type STAB, and its high chance to burn is very useful. Ice Beam is for grass-type switch-ins and dragons such as Salamence. Its EVs are optimized to grant it extreme physical bulk and some physical attack to use Earthquake with.

whimsicott.gif

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 Spe
Timid Nature
- Encore
- U-turn
- Moonblast
- Giga Drain

Whimsicott is my main water-type check/counter and an emergency check to some offensive Pokemon as it can use Encore to lock them into a single move, giving me a safe switch to one of my other Pokemon. Moonblast and Giga Drain are for STAB, and U-Turn is for scouting or gaining momentum. Its EVs are optimized for bulk on both physical and special sides.

gyarados.gif

Gyarados @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

This is my primary set-up sweeper. I decided to use Intimidate as its ability, although Moxie does seem very appealing since Gyarados sets up mostly on other water-types or fire-types anyway. Lum berry is added to cure any status ailment once, allowing me to get past annoying Thunder Waves, Scald burns, and other status-inducing moves and gain a free Dragon Dance.

Dragon Dance is the set-up move, Waterfall is for the main STAB, Stone Edge is for coverage against other flying-types and some ice-types such as Cloyster and Abomasnow, and Earthquake is essential for getting past electric- and steel-types such as Heliolisk, Mega Ampharos, and Empoleon. The EV spread is purely optimized for sweeping, while some extra EVs are put into its defense to give it more physical bulk.

infernape.gif

Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Vacuum Wave

This is my wall-breaker and a pseudo-sweeper that can break through some bulky walls such as Alomomola and Mega Aggron who do not invest too much in special defense. It requires safe switches but I can generally find an opportunity to switch him on some Pokemon such as Forretress and set up a Nasty Plot.

Nasty Plot is obviously the set-up move. Vacuum Wave is for inflicting some chip damage before fainting or getting past faster Pokemon such as Sharpedo. Focus Blast is the main STAB move, but it is very unreliable and I end up losing a lot of matches because of its misses. Fire Blast is the best non-priority move I have, as it is much more accurate than Focus Blast and has a great base power of 110 with STAB.

Life Orb adds to its offensive power even more, ensuring some OHKOs against Pokemon such as Hydreigon or Umbreon when firing off a Focus Blast. Finally, its EV spread is, like Gyarados, optimized for sweeping. Max special attack and speed investment with a Timid nature allows me to get past a lot of Pokemon in general, without having to worry about a speed tie since I have Vacuum Wave.

crobat.gif

Crobat @ Sky Plate
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 184 HP / 72 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Defog
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Roost

The final member of my team is also one of the most crucial ones. It serves the role of a fast lead or pivot and is my only source of hazard removal. Defog is for hazard removal, although I dislike it somewhat because it rids of the my opponent's hazards as well. Brave Bird is his primary way of inflicting damage, though its recoil is very annoying. U-Turn is for scouting or gaining momentum, and Roost is for recovering HP whenever I have the chance.

Sky Plate is for powering up his brave bird, which now sits as a whopping 144 base-power without STAB. His EVs make him a somewhat bulky but very fast pivot that can still inflict some damage when trying to remove hazards.

Please give me any suggestions or feedback about this team! I would also appreciate if someone would give me some advice regarding replacing one of my team members because, once again, my team is very weak to stall and phazing teams who have bulky cores. Thanks in advance!

Hey man, cool looking team you have got there. As you stated yourself, there are some weaknesses that we should try to fix.

• First change I'd like to suggest is using Specially Offensive Defog Salamence over Crobat. This set allows you to keep a great Fighting check as well as the ability to remove hazards. It's just much less passive and allows you to beat many things that Crobat has struggle to deal with, such as Forretress. Draco Meteor also allows you to pressure Cune which is a clearly a threat.

• At this point the team basically loses to Calm Mind Florges, it also lacks an Alakazam switch in so I believe using SD Escavalier over Infernape would help the team a lot. This change basically allows you to wall all the things listed as well as keeping a decent win condition that can hurt many teams.

• The team is still really weak to Stealth Rocks, even with Defog, 3 mons weak to them is just too much. Toxicroak over Gyarados allows you to keep a decent Fighting check which also has a great match up versus the water types in general. Standart SD LO should do the job here.

Pursuit over Roost on Aerodactyl allows you to trapkill Beedrill which is really threatening. It also helps you versus Alakazam and Chandelure which are both pretty hard to switch into.

• Running Pixie Plate Whimsicott as well as Energy Ball over Giga Drain would make Whimsicott much less passive, Energy Ball has a stronge chance to OHKO Mamo which is really important.

That's all I have got! Many changes there but I tryied to keep the team's structure as well as fixing it to deal better with the current metagame.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions! Unfortunately, I don't really know how to use this team, since I'm used to having a sweeper that can set up and plow through several Pokemon at once. The fact that you replaced both my Gyarados and my Infernape really leaves me a bit uncomfortable. Could you give some advice as to how your proposed team is supposed to function?

Hey there! Cool team you've got going. I've got some suggestions that you can try out to improve its performance, especially against the main issues that you brought up.

  • I noticed that your team has next to nothing for bulky psychic types like Reuniclus, Slowking, and Cresselia. The team also lacks any decent way to deal with fairy types, as Crobat is your fairy resist but doesn't fare too well against CM Florges. I would suggest replacing Mega Aerodactyl with Mega Beedrill. On top of being a great addition to help with the aforementioned threats, Mega Beedrill also gives your team a grounded poison type to absorb Toxic Spikes. This can be pretty crucial, especially since more bulky teams, which you mentioned give you trouble, may tend to rely on hazards for their damage. Mega Beedrill is one of the most effective mons at grabbing momentum in this tier and can synergize pretty well with the team. A lot of common switch ins to Mega Beedrill such as Cobalion, Mega Aggron/Mega Steelix, and Alomomola would not appreciate you bringing in Infernape after the U-turn. Having MBee to U-turn alongside Whimsicott is pretty neat too, as some of MBee's switch-ins don't like Whimsicott and vice versa. Here's the set:

beedrill-mega.gif

Beedrill-Mega @ Beedrillite
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Poison Jab
- Drill Run
- Protect
- U-turn

  • Without Mega Aerodactyl, the team loses its flying resist. I suggest replacing Crobat with Zapdos. Seeing as the team really struggles to bring bulky waters down, I would also suggest running a more offensive set. An EV spread of 252 SpA / 80 SpD / 176 Spe would allow Zapdos to hold as much offensive pressure as possible while also outpacing the 90 base speed tier. This includes threats like Roserade and Lucario. The remaining EVs are invested into Special Defense for some more bulk. Zapdos should be running HP Ice so that it is able to check threats such as Mega Sceptile. Here's the set:

zapdos.gif

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 80 SpD / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Roost
- Defog

  • You mentioned that your team really struggles with more defensive teams. One of the biggest defensive threats to your team is Curse Snorlax. You don't have any comfortable switch-ins to it, as Mega Aerodactyl really doesn't want to get paralyzed by Body Slam. Once Whimsicott is gone, there is pretty much nothing stopping Snorlax from setting up a Curse and winning the game. I suggest replacing Gyarados with Sableye. Not only does Sableye completely counter Snorlax, but it acts as a stallbreaker so that you can break down defensive teams in general with Prankster + Taunt. Of course, Sableye's utility isn't limited to only against defensive teams. It tends to perform well against offense as well with Prankster + Will-O-Wisp. Sableye gives you a pretty good check to fighting types as well, like Cobalion for example, which could be pretty threatening to your team if it carries Stone Edge. Sableye helps your match up against SD Lucario, Zapdos, and Scarf Hydreigon as well. Sableye can also work in conjunction with Mega Beedrill. Since fairies are a good way to deal with Sableye, you can take advantage every time your opponent switches in a fairy by going into MBee. Also, having three SR weak mons is pretty tough to deal with, and this change gives you one less. Lastly, Sableye gives your team access to Knock Off, one of the most useful moves in the game. Here's the set:

sableye.gif

Sableye @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Careful Nature
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Knock Off

  • The team has some pretty decent fighting checks in Sableye and Zapdos. Sableye also takes a lot of pressure off of Whimsicott in checking Scarfed Hydreigon. I think your team would benefit more from running an offensive spread on Whimsicott. This allows Whimsicott to insert as much offensive pressure on your opponent as possible, which would be useful especially against bulky waters. It also allows Whimsicott to outspeed some important threats like Cobalion and Mega Absol. I would also suggest running a Yache Berry so that Whimsicott has a one-time free switch-in to offensive waters like Mega Swampert and Feraligatr. It lets Whimsicott comfortably tank a Life Orb Mamoswine's Ice Shard and revenge kill it with Giga Drain as well. Here's the set:

whimsicott.gif

Whimsicott @ Yache Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Giga Drain
- Encore
- U-turn

  • The team needs to put as much pressure on bulky waters as possible, so I suggest replacing Focus Blast with Grass Knot on Infernape. Dealing with Focus Blast's accuracy issues isn't any fun. Grass Knot allows you to hit bulky waters like Suicune both harder and reliably.

Other Options:
  • If you feel that the Yache Berry on Whims isn't necessary, you can always opt for a Pixie Plate or even a Meadow Plate to get the power boost for Moonblast or Giga Drain respectively.
  • Another neat option could be Pursuit over Drill Run on Mega Beedrill. This would allow you to trap key threats like Alakazam and Chandelure, both of which can stop an Infernape sweep. Gardevoir is also a threat that you could sort of trap, though you would need to trap it twice in order to take it out. Sableye carries Knock Off already and the team would able to deal with most of the threats that are targeted by Drill Run such as Cobalion, so feel free to try it out.

I hope this helped, and good luck with the team!
