[Overview]
Shedinja finds itself a niche role on stall teams thanks to its ability Wonder Guard, letting it totally wall alot of common threats, like Xerneas, Zygarde-C, and Kyogre. It's also excellent at annoying the opposing team, coming packed with Priority for revenge killing and the ability to spread status. However, it struggles massively against a plethora of top tier Pokemon, notably Yveltal, Eternatus, Ho-Oh, Marshadow, and Zekrom. And despite its seemingly overpowered ability, it can lose to Pokemon it wants to check, if they have a coverage move to damage it, like Zygarde-C running Toxic or Necrozma-DM running Knock Off.
[SET]
name: Wonder Guard
move 1: Shadow Sneak
move 2: Will-o-Wisp
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Protect
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Wonder Guard
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Shadow Sneak is the preferred attacking move as not only does its high PP allow it to outlast Pokemon which Shedinja cannot break through with sheer power, like Necrozma-DM and Substitute Kyogre, but its high priority allows Shedinja to revenge kill foes like Darmanitan-G, Rayquaza, and Zekrom. Will-O-Wisp gives Shedinja a way to punish physical attackers and Pokemon that are immune to Toxic, like Buzzwole, Ferrothorn, and Necrozma-DM. Protect lets Shedinja scout for super-effective moves, like Necrozma-DM's Knock Off, or Groudon's Heat Crash, as well as letting it scout Choice item users like Calyrex-S and Marshadow.
Shedinja should only be used on Stall teams, as such its optimal to run it with teammates that are good on stall like Xerneas, Lunala, Blissey, and Toxapex. Pairing up Shedinja with teammates that can cover its weaknesses is incredibly important. Ho-Oh, Yveltal, Eternatus, and Zygarde-C are able to switch into Ground, Dark, Ghost, Fire, and Rock-type attacks which are able to harm Shedinja; in return, Shedinja can pivot into attacks which are super effective against them, but cant hurt it.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====
Shedinja can run Swords Dance and Poltergeist instead of Toxic and Will-O-Wisp, but because of how common Pokemon that beat it and also Knock Off are in the metagame, its usually not very good.
Checks and Counters
====
**Super Effective Damage**: The most consistent way to beat Shedinja is by hitting it with super-effective moves. Pokemon that should always run super effective moves for Shedinja, such as Yveltal, Eternatus, Ho-Oh, Zarude, and Lunala should be able to take it out using their respective super effective moves. Zekrom deserves a special mention here as, while it cant hit Shedinja super effectively, its ability in Teravolt does allow it to ignore Shedinjas Wonder Guard while attacking.
**Uncommon Coverage Moves**: Niche coverage moves on Pokemon which Shedinja wants to beat, such as Toxic Zygarde, Crunch Dracovish and Knock Off Necrozma-DM can catch Shedinja off guard, however, scouting with Protect lets it avoid being hit by the move, but it does mean that Shedinja is no longer able to check that Pokemon.
**Indirect Damage**: Status Inflicting moves like Toxic from foes like Blissey and Toxapex are able to go through Wonder Guard and KO Shedinja, meanwhile Weather conditions like Tyranitar's Sand can hit Shedinja as well.
