This noob is arguing with me, I put his swampert to sleep, it woke up soon after and then I put his gengar to sleep.

The swampert was awake.

Sleep clause is only one pokemon can be put to sleep at a time, right?

so if the swampert was awake, wasnt it fair game?

Yes.

As long as none of your opponents current pokemon are asleep because of you you're free to use sleep moves. If they wake up or die you can sleep something new.
