Gastrodon is one of PU's best physical walls thanks to its great defensive typing allowing it to take on threats such as Arcanine, Paldean Tauros-F, and Pawmot, choice of amazing abilities in Sticky Hold and Storm Drain, and access to reliable recovery. It's great utility movepool and neutrality to common attacking types such as Ice and Water also allows it find use over other defensive Ground-types such as Gligar and Mudsdale. Ice Beam is decent coverage, allowing Gastrodon to target opposing Ground-types such as Mudsdale and Gligar while also hitting Grass-types such as Wo-Chien and Decidueye for good damage. Alternatively, Surf is a useful secondary STAB, still allowing Gastrodon to target opposing Ground-types while also doing great damage to Rotom-H, who otherwise it can struggle against. Clear Smog provides the least coverage but most utility, preventing Gastrodon from becoming setup bait for the likes of Calm Mind Florges, Terastallized Arcanine, and Scrafty. Stealth Rock is normally ran on Gastrodon, although if a teammate such as Bronzong, Copperajah, and Naclstack already fulfills the role as a Stealth Rocker, Spikes is a viable alternative. Gastrodon has a wide variety of item choices; most commonly, Rocky Helmet is used to punish contact attacks from Paldean Tauros-W, Staraptor, and Skuntank. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Gastrodon to not fear entry hazards and is especially useful in tandem with Sticky Hold, and Leftovers can be used to provide marginal recovery for Gastrodon. Sticky Hold allows Gastrodon to be unable to lose its item which can be especially valuable with Rocky Helmet or Heavy-Duty Boots, although Storm Drain allows Gastrodon to more reliably switch into Water-types such as Tatsugiri, Paldean Tauros-W, and Milotic. Tera Fairy allows Gastrodon to check Fighting-types such as Scrafty and Paldean Tauros-W, while also dealing with Dark-types such as Zoroark and Wo-Chien and completely wall Tatsugiri if running Storm Drain. Alternatively, Tera Ghost completely walls Fighting-type attacks while also providing valuable utility as a spinblocker against threats like Tatsugiri and Alolan Sandslash, however it does make Gastrodon weak to Knock Off as well as being unable to wall threats such as Stealth Rock Golurk and Skuntank.
Physically Defensive Gastrodon fits on a wide variety of teams, however it most commonly finds itself on balance teams as a teams defensive backbone. Gastrodon can't deal with certain physical attackers such as Decidueye, Hariyama, and Virizion. Checks to these threats such as Skuntank, Staraptor, and Arcanine thus make good partners, and help deal with Grass-types such as Brute Bonnet and Venusaur. Even with its naturally decent special bulk, Gastrodon still appreciates having Special Walls as teammates such as Assault Vest Galarian Slowbro and Florges to not be its teams sole reliable special wall. In turn, these two help deal with Choice-locked Fighting-types such as Flamigo and Paldean Tauros-W Gastrodon can't reliably check,, with Galarian Slowbro also being able to switch into Toxic from Pokemon like Bellibolt and Gligar. Coalossal is a very notiable partner; Coalossal can enable Gastrodon to run Spikes over Stealth Rock, can check Pokemon like Brute Bonnet and Staraptor, and can removes hazards to make Gastrodon a stronger wall. In turn, Gastrodon checks threats like Paldean Tauros-W, Tatsugiri, and Paldean Tauros-F that Coalossal can struggle with. Gastrodon's ability to check and threaten Pokemon like Paldean Tauros-W, Arcanine, and Pawmot helps enable teammates threatened by these Pokemon such as Rotom-H, Scrafty, and Toxtricity. In turn, these three can help beat attackers who Gastrodon can't deal with such as Decidueye, Ambipom, and Rotom-M.
