SmogDubs Hailroom, just goin' fer a rip, bud.

Howdy folks I wanted to post this doubles team just before the holidays so that we can all enjoy them, while we ruin other peoples' Yuletide joy with destruction, and many 'faints' from the deepest depths of Hell!

*Hail* Satan! (okay)

INTRO:

I honestly haven't been playing competitive very long, as a matter of fact at the time of writing this I believe it has only been a week or so. As well, I do not get much time to play the cartridge, so Showdown has allowed me to get acquainted with the conventional mechanics as well as dabble with the numbers relating to the game.

As the title infers, I utilize Trick Room and Abomasnow's Snow Warning in conjunction to produce an Ice-flourishing setup, in order to combat very powerful teams. Small precautions are made to ensure Trick Room is activated, including hazard prevention, and priority moves. At the time of writing this I was at around 1630, but this team has made it up to ~1670 ranges before I had finally lost. Here are some of those battles:

I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST (oh god this is my first battle with the team, where I learned that TR cancels TR)
THAT NO ONE EVER WAS (okay so not the best performance but still showcases the teams versatility under pressure)
DON'T YOU EVER SAY I JUST WALKED AWAY (are you guys seeing that Walrein????)

One more:
This one, as well as some of the previous battles, all seem to follow a trend in where the Abomasnow gets OHKO-ed after the Hail is set up. Though it does not shut me down totally, there is a significant change in the team priorities, which my team at times may not be able to accommodate for. My objective is to overcome some of the obstacles that hinder this team's performance.

PROS & CONS:

PROS:
+ Impressive bulk
+ Lots of sweeping potential with double-target STABs
+ Able to perform substantially without TR
CONS:
- New emerging metagame poses a serious threat the team's typing
- Other TR teams (you are as much a threat to them as they are to you)
- Setup is always a con :(

THE TEAM:

You'll notice that a majority of the team runs pretty standard spreads. This is partially due to a lack of time to do calculations, but mostly because I'm terribly apathetic. Regardless, they serve their purpose for now... For the most part, that is.

abomasnow-mega.png

No You Can't (Abomasnow) (M) @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Atk / 208 SAtk
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Blizzard
- Ice Shard
- Protect
- Wood Hammer/Leech Seed (0 Atk)/whatever maaaan

Obama provides the majority of the team with sustain, and damage to the opponents', all before he even has to do anything. I use Mr President as a mixed attacker with lots of potential to control the flow of the battle (with Prot/IS). As of recent, I have stopped starting with him in many situations, due to the increasing number of T-Flame/CharY starts in Doubles. Obama's main problem, as evident, is his typing, which leaves him vulnerable to a slew of metagame type-sets. On the other hand, his high SpA allows him to deal considerable damage to both opposing mons, regardless of their typing (this statement has yet to have been formally, or mathematically, shown). Blizzard power is sacrificed for a considerable STAB move that helps get rid of those pesky M-Gyarados' and Greninjas, though this can be rectified in place for some healing power.

Lil Kim (Chandelure) (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 SDef / 252 HP / 252 SAtk
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Heat Wave
- Shadow Ball
- Protect
- Trick Room

Our favourite East-Coast female rap artist makes an appearance, wearing some sort of designer Focus Sash, who knows. Chandelure is an excellent switch-in, but mostly excels in setting up TR, using the Focus Sash to *pretty much* guarantee a proc. On the off-chance that your opponent doesn't realize what he or she is up against, Ms. Jones can provide incredible damage output, and take care of certain popular types. I feel as if Protect is practically a staple in many movesets, as the prediction factor and synergy in doubles can win you games many-a-time.

talonflame.png

Xerxes (Talonflame) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 164 Spd / 252 Atk / 88 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Brave Bird
- Protect
- Taunt/Roost/I don't care

Don't really need to say much about T-Flame at this point... Priority B-Bird is incredible, FB easily slays Aegislash and that stupid berry-eating tree. On this team, the King of Kings serves as a late-game sweeper, usually when TR is gone. Protect, man, PROTECT, I guess it COULD be swapped out, but I find great success with it, so I have kept it. Taunt is really supposed to be anti-TR for when you're going ham with B-Bird and whatnot, but honestly on the odd chance that I do use it, it's usually for stopping hazards or statuses, so thats kind of up in the air. Same goes with the LO: CB, ExB, pretty discretional.

avalugg.png

I dont pop Molly (Avalugg) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Ice Body
EVs: 236 HP / 20 Atk / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature
IVs: 30 Def / 30 SAtk / 30 SDef / 0 Spd
- Avalanche/Ice Fang
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Rapid Spin
- Stone Edge

Haha this thing. What it's SUPPOSED to be is the beast that saws through limbs, but in REALITY it's a beast that plucks feathers. That AV is definitely a table-turner, it turns a whole plethora of OHKOs and 2HKOs into 1/2s and 1/3s, giving you room and time for (hopefully) plenty of damage. Its flaw can perhaps be fixed with a slight EV redistribution, so in fact it is quite viable. I love Stone Edge, if I had a loonie for every time Avalugg stopped a CharY or T-Flame dead in its tracks, I would be the richest man in Canada. Quite frankly, this mon is totally up in the air as far as I'm concerned, although getting rid of him would open up a space to counter my weaknesses. But then again, rocks and spikes alike are awful, especially for this team. Yea so other than that, HP is whatever, it can pound on mons, not gonna die easily, etc. etc...

I think out of the entire team, this mon is the most 'up-for-debate'.

352.png

I rock Tom Ford (Kecleon) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Trick Room
- Brick Break
- Shadow Claw
- Rock Slide/Whatever you need

Great song, pretty good album, I recommend it. Just like this moveset, totally recommend it. Ye Boy JayZ gets one of the greasiest abilities in the game, giving it STABs galore. A highly diverse movepool makes the new Keck-meister a highly volatile TR user/partner. There are slight modifications you can make, obviously, but the big thing to keep in mind (once again, no formulaic math to prove it) is that with 252 EVs, Kecleon is pushing ~324 HP, and with the unpredictability of my moveset (as evident from the replays ^^^^^^), it is quite possible for this bad ass to sweep a team. The flip-side, of course, is that he BBs and then gets B-Birded by Staraptor or whatever non-Tflame. There is an element of unpredictability with Kecleon, unfortunately, however if used right, can produce some pretty spectacular results.

365.png

It's a disease! (Walrein) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Ice Body
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 Def
IVs: 0 Spd / 0 Atk
- Surf
- Blizzard*
- Roar/Swagger
- Toxic

* Really the only staple, everything else is discretional. Obviously, different choices lead to different results, this is what I find to be the most versatile and effective.

Hoooooooly moly forget Satan, forget Obama: THIS THING is the beet's meat. Opponents don't resist Ice? Blizzard away until you're late for Holiday Night dinner. If they do? Well Toxic them, and then perhaps Surf the Waves of Disappointment that you're playing a video game instead of stuffing your face full of Insulin-inducing carbohydrates that clearly this unholy two-tusked monster has indulged on recently. Really great bulk, T-bolts and Thunders alike aren't gonna kill Walrein. The sustain is quite prominent, considering his bulk; partnered with Abomasnow, the opposing team is potentially set up to be swept by dual Blizzards, and decent priority type coverage.

Okay so initially I wanted to just start Abomasnow with a TR user, so that I could get the Hail right away. But from time to time I find myself facing a reaaaaaally slow TTar, whose SStorm outweighs my Snow Warning. I had a change of heart and have been playing around with different starts, usually with a TR in there somewhere. Anyways thoughts and comments are of course welcome, and thank you for taking the time to read this!

I feel like you saw my Rock-weak team and decided you had to beat it in Rock weaknesses.
The quickest thing I can suggest is Excadrill>Avalugg. Rapid Spin isn't great in dubs, but if you are going to use it, might as well do it right. Ground and Steel both have really great synergy with Ice and Fire on offense AND defense. Use Drill Run over EQ and Mold Breaker can surprise any Rotom that thinks it walls basically your whole team.

Haha you wouldn't believe the amount of times a Rock-type has ruined my day. Swapping Avalugg for Exca is an interesting proposal, and I think I understand what you mean by 'doing it right', his higher damage output makes RS a reasonable move to make when posed with the corresponding situation.

But that poses the question of how that changes the overall strength of the team, though I may get the damage I am sacrificing quite of bit of bulk for EDrill.

There is no question posed. Excadrill is much more viable than Avalugg, it works better with your team with its typing and role, you currently have no answer to Tyranitar which is really bad for a Hail team and you already said that is the slot you want to change.
You already have more than enough "bulk" on the team and resists are always more important anyway.

I think I kinda have to agree with youngjake93 here, as Excadrill is a significantly more powerful Spinner who helps you take on both Sand (Tyranitar, other Excadrill), and to a lesser extent Sun (mostly just Ninetails), teams and generally has a much better offensive presence.

Other than that, I like the look of this. I personally use Trick Room myself, and while I find your lack of faith Fake Out/Follow Me/Rage Powder support disturbing, this looks pretty good. One thing I might recommend is at least testing Reuniclus over Chandelure. While I haven't myself, I think it'd be worth pursuing for Reuniclus's immunity to residual hail damage and his increased longevity and bulk. Plus, he too helps to take on Sand and the Fighting-types who would currently try to smash half your team.

Ok there really shouldn't be a spinner on this team. This is Doubles, so there aren't any entry hazards in the vast majority of matches, so more often than not Rapid Spin will just be a waste of a moveslot. Honestly if I try to change this team I'll probably just end up making too many changes so it'd just defeat the point. My advice to you would be to come on to #doubles (linked in my signature) and browse the Doubles subforum to gain more experience with the tier, because from the looks of the team you're not too familiar with the tier as of now.
