Playoffs Smogon Classic XI - Playoffs [Won by PDC]

:wo:Hype finals, gl both

Jirachi used Iron Head! It's not very effective... A critical hit! (The opposing Zapdos lost 22% of its health!) The opposing Zapdos flinched and couldn't move!

O/U Total turns:

PDC vs Amaranth: 380
Fear vs elodin: 230
My predictions of longer series didn't come true unfortunately, I'm hoping for a longer set in the finals.

O/U Total turns: 280.

Both players have played super well and deserve to be in the finals - no clue who is going to win so it's a true 50/50 in my eyes. However only one of these players have made me fall asleep during a 330 turn ADV game this playoffs so I'll be slightly rooting for Fear. Hope the games are free from too much RNG!

You’ve come a long way from going over SPL 5 war stories in the dinning hall PDC, big congrats. You’ve done such an awesome job coming back, glad you got to finish off strong.

Great run, Fear. You’re one of the best players on here and a model of greatness.

won vs fear, ggs. couldn't ask for a better finals opponent.

after 15 years of trying, i finally managed to get the individual trophy. i figured after my initial "retirement" in 2017 when i went off to college i'd probably never have a shot at winning again. over the years i tried a few more times sparingly, but my grip on the new metas wasn't as solid as it used to be, so i faded into the managerial/support role. i was going to do the same for this spl and just wait out the tournament cycle, but after being subbed into sv on a chance and somehow winning, i started to care about competing again. my first spl game in ~8 years reminded me what it is like to be a player. a big part of me was exhausted from being washed and forgotten about as a player, so i figured why not at least try for a run?

needless to say this feels really good. i don't know where i will go next w/ mons, but i am glad that i at least was able to accomplish this. maybe i will play spl, maybe i will manage, or maybe i will sit it out. but regardless, this was a massive grind and, in its own way, was very draining. it takes an immense amount of effort to win a tour like this. i'm glad that i can free up some headspace for non-pokemon related topics now....

might make a RoA post w/ some of my teams that i was especially proud of later on. but for now, i wanna shoutout some of those which helped me along the way.

shoutouts

Gilbert arenas have to start out at the top. my roommate and my biggest supporter. between spl, scl, this tour, and the invis we have tested and talked irl about pokemon more than probably anybody else in the world. most of my ideas started out with a conversation with you. incredibly thankful for all the help. now we need to win spl together...

Zokuru my gsc savior. zokuru was the man behind the curtain for my gsc prep/run until finals. probably one of the most underrated players, zok can pick a MU out of a haystack and helped me fundamentally learn a lot about gsc. when i started this tour, my gsc knowledge was pretty terrible and i definitely struggled to play the tier. just going over interactions (how do i switch into snorlax?) helped me so much. the team selection for all 3 opponents in POs was immaculate.

gorgie i think we probably played 100 games the last 48 hours across the 5 gens. gorgie also helped me shore up my gsc build, and even though i lost in gsc, it was an awesome team and the advice on fear was perfect. another savant of the game, you've got real unmatched enthusiasm for pokemon. also never afraid to explore any idea...now that i'm decent at gsc, might be time for me to actually venture into your channel next spl.

crayon pop i think we probably spent 100 hours during playoffs talking about teams for dpp. if you couldn't tell, most of the builds that i used in playoffs were either his, or co-built between us. probably the best dpp builder, the types of teams i brought were very derivative of him. t16 was an excellent pick, top 8 was one of my favorites we edited to reinvent, and the finals team was a combination of a great call and non-stop editing. i promised to do this, so i will: buy osgoode's dpp book! price unknown. teams unknown. not really sure if this will sell. if you want to win with mag and gastro every game though this is a mandatory buy ;)

Finchinator from the dining hall to nyc to smogon we've been through it all. we've teamed together more times than i can count, and each time i've made poffs i've went to you for advice. you helped immensely on finalizing my bw options (turns out cbtar is a bad pick) and also gave me a hard dose of reality in how my bw was being played. feels insane to finally win a trophy. yours is coming soon.

elodin elodin and i tested an extreme amount during both of our runs. for finals, we probably played some 30 games in prep and bounced ideas off for bw. the keld choice > rotom-w on the final team was a great decision. another great player who would have been an incredible finals opponent, elodin is one of the most innovative builders in bw and his advice/suggestions helped me lock in bw as a victory for semis/finals.

Isza my rby goat. i will be the first to admit when i started POs i had no idea what i was doing in rby. i reached out to you for help and just learning the lead MUs helped me improve dramatically. time to 9-0 in spl.

Sceptross for top 4, and for spl. one of the most knowledgeable rby players and somebody who helped me understand fundamentally what the meta is about.

Dj Breloominati♬ my ultimate supporter. not only were you here for playoffs, but you were here for the regular season and in spl. without your encouragement and final games i don't think i could have won this tournament. even when i burnt out during dppl, and started to burn out in classic, you managed to bring me back from the brink. i legitimately think i would have lost the mental element of this tournament without you. maybe time for us to get the red trophy.

Cryos in general, a blast of a team to be on. and a huge piece of my support here. thank you all for cheering me on.

@useast likewise, my old and new friends from east provided a lot of support here. while i won't ever end up in a starting LU again, i'll be sure to stay tuned into your guys successes.

blank you too. my biggest supporter. the best manager on smogon.

Siatam Laurel Triangles Sam Kingler violet river ima TyCarter Shing ABR for all the tests and advice on the teams that made them great. couldn't thank all of you enough as well.

VoD wins again. Classic.

Congrats on winning PDC, well deserved trophy. I found the triple gen threat of BW DPP and ADV mastery that you carried incredibly rough to prep against, not only you have a wide variety of well made teams and styles, but you're also able to play them precisely with very few missteps. You had an insane run, being deep in all the individual cups and seeded #1 into eventually winning the whole thing. You craved this trophy and you got it with your worth.

I wasn't the player I aspired to be today; but alas not every Sunday night can be mine.

I had some time to play this summer and initially my goal heading into this was to win the GSC cup. I hadn't build in BW, RBY and DPP for years, but I did keep somewhat in touch because of SPL. In their respective cups I mainly played comfort and older/proven stuff. Even when I qualified for the playoffs my priorities remained; I would win the gsc cup and play the playoffs for fun, that would keep me content. But then 4 thunders against last mon Vap went left in the GSC semifinals and my goals felt short lived; I actually had to try and be more decent in the other gens thereafter since I've been given the classic playoffs chance.

I want to shoutout the people who have supported me during the playoffs, making it possible for me to even get this far.

M Dragon One of the best old gen players on the site, thank you for your help and friendship through the years. Your DPP insight was immaculate and had always the right calls into what to bring (even if my paranoia didnt not heed the call for the finals). You helped me massively with bo5 s and general prep advice. I would have loved to win this after you had won yours but it wasnt meant to be.

Astamatitos Still the best and most creative ADVer in my eyes. You are a legend and I'm glad we got to work stuff out together once again like times of old. You're just such an irreplaceable cogwheel in the ADV scene, forever you will be. Wish you all the best for you and your family, truthfully. You deserve it.

coco A true friend I did not expect to find in pokemon. Never ending support, a bunch of Bo5s grinding with me every week and open minded in teams and suggestions. I didnt even reach the part of how skillful you are in many of these gens, i dont think i had beaten you in DPP the last 6-7 bo5 we did which is a testament of how good you are in this game. You will be luckier next time, i'm sure!

Christos Your help was massive. I couldnt have felt comfortable with RBY without you laying around game plans and teams, options and thoughts. Your DPP help was also great, never hesitated passing stuff for me to try and your sincere thoughts on how to approach my opponents. You prepared scouts and visuals, you talked with me daily and you were there to help and support me in whatever I needed.

choolio I'm very lucky to have someone like you be around me. You offered me GSC games to keep me warmed up every week and an avenue to discuss and test whatever GSC teams and ideas i might had. We had incredible chemistry in SPL and having a friend like you in this game is a blessing.

Gypsy My main BW support. Meessm, you know BW inside out and not only that, you are not afraid to speak your mind and have precise and concrete reasoning behind every suggestion. Even if I only got to know you through your recent gsc adventures, it saddens me that you've gradually lost interest in playing this game because you are the mind that BW needs to sort itself out.

BluBirD thank you for everything you've done. You dedicated your time playing with me when real life had it rough for you means the world to me. You know how much I value your input and friendship, eagerly waiting to see you succeed.

BKC You know how rough I had it with DPP, when I had to call in the big guns. You gave me your insight and thoughts, and I'm grateful you were sincere and true in your suggestions. I don't think anyone understands the tier as deep as you do.

GaryTheGengar We played a lot during spl and even though we didnt get to practice at all in the playoffs, you never denied me input and direction when I asked you both in BW and DPP. wish I could bring it in for the pack but alas, I'm certain you are as capable of doing it if you really try.

OmBrArch Student of Sinnoh Kingler Zokuru bello figo thanks for the support and everything you've done for me.
