XY OU So Fierce - Mega Gyarados Team

Welcome to my second RMT. My first was on a dual screen hyper offense team, and this one will be on a balanced team. I'll admit I'm a bit clumsy when it comes to team building sometimes, therefore hyper offense is my go to playstyle, because I can forget about some threats, but make up for it with overwhelming power. The change in style of teams is quite big for me, I've tried my best to account for everything I can, but I know it can be improved, which is why I'm here.

In my opinion, a team should always be focused on a certain set up sweeper to help them achieve their goal. With that in mind, let's get on to the team members so I can explain how they help Gyarados sweep.

Team at a glance.

Summer (Latias) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Recover
- Dragon Pulse
- Psyshock

- Uses Defog for Gyarados and Talonflame so they don't take damage from Stealth Rock.
- Max speed with a Timid nature makes use of its excellent speed stat.
- Takes on fighting types quite well, which can be a threat to Gyarados after mega evolving. Also handles Zapdos after being badly poisoned and with Stealth Rock up.
- Recover allows it to stall and rack up damage to weaken the enemy team even more.
- Synergizes well with everything else on the team.

Blades (Bisharp) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Iron Head

- One of the two forms of priority on my team to help weaken opposing checks to Gyarados.
- Traps Aegislash and the Lati twins which would be an issue otherwise.
- Defiant allows it punish opposing Defog users, such as the aforementioned Lati twins. As well as the use of Sticky Web.
- Knock Off gets rid of leftovers and other problematic items, plus softens up the opposing team significantly, allowing Gyarados to sweep much more easily.
- Works well together with Latias, as they make for up each other's weaknesses almost perfectly.

Revenge (Talonflame) (F) @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz
- Roost

- Acts as my revenge killer and second form of priority. Allows me to forego a Choice Scarf user, which would waste a valuable team slot.
- Access to U-turn lets it keep momentum and get easier switches in to an appropriate team member.
- Easily kills fighting types that give Bisharp and Mega Gyarados trouble.
- Good lead against a majority of teams.
- Benefits from the support of everything on the team, which makes it fit very nicely.

Quantum (Heatran) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 248 SpD / 8 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Earth Power
- Lava Plume

- My Stealth Rock user of the team, gives crucial damage Gyarados needs to sweep.
- Spreads status and makes it easy for Latias to stall if need be.
- Easily takes care of Ferrothorn which my team doesn't handle well otherwise.
- Very beneficial 4x Fairy resistance.
- Absorbs Fire type attacks aimed at Bisharp and checks Charizard-Y.

Blind (Rotom-Wash) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

- Acts as my physical wall. Appreciates the Intimidate support from Gyarados.
- Spreads burns if Lava Plume doesn't.
- Pain Split allows it to heal and damage the enemy for reliable prior damage.
- Volt Switch, like U-turn keeps momentum and often gives safe switches in to Gyarados.
- 44 Speed EVs allows it to outspeed 252+ Azumarill which is a powerful threat to my team.

Fierce (Gyarados-Mega) (M) @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Taunt
- Waterfall
- Earthquake

- As previously mentioned, my focus of the team and my main sweeper. Everything on the team is aimed to support him in some way.
- Taunt stops status that would otherwise prevent a sweep. Turns some things from checks to mere set up fodder.
- Mold Breaker Earthquake is excellent, and hits Rotom-Wash which would otherwise wall Gyarados completely.
- Has the added benefit of being able to choose when to mega evolve, which can be hard to deal with since its weaknesses and resistances change so drastically.
- Two Dragon Dances against a weakened team almost always guarantees a win.
- Supports the whole team before mega evolving using an ability with a huge amount of utility, Intimidate.

Overall it's a pretty solid team, but I find it to have a hard time dealing with Scarfed Rotom (why are people even running this, let alone so often too?). I recommend Draco Meteor on Latias to have a very solid amount of damage dealt to Scarfed Rotom.

Scarfed rotom is really, really good. That's why people run it. Mega gyarados is a perfect example of why, it can outspeed and burn gyarados making it useless. Even in mega form physically defensive (probably the most common) rotom-w gives mega gyarados trouble. It needs to be at +1 to have a chance at OHKO'ing with earthquake, and even then it's only a 50% chance which is not worth the risk of a burn. So, although rotom wash is no longer a complete counter, it's still a massive pain for mega gyarados to deal with if it gets a safe switch in.

The above poster has a good idea with Latias. Draco meteor is much more powerful and can deal much more damage to everything. With your EV spread draco meteor does upwards of 60% to rotom-w provided it's not specially defensive.

I have a few suggestions:

Latias:
Dragon Pulse>Draco
Psyshock>Healing Wish
This can allow you to go for an early sweep with Gyarados, and when you get t-waved by Thundurus you can always get healed again

Bisharp:
Life Orb>Blackglasses
You have 3 dark type moves which will all get boosted by this item, just slightly less than life orb but you won't be on a timer.

Gyarados:
Taunt>Ice Fang
Right now you have 2 pokemon to take on Mega Venusaur, talonflame, who can die by SR easily, and Latias, who can get pursuit trapped by anyone with pursuit. Ice Fang can help you deal with Venusaur even more (mold breaker ignores Thick Fat). And Ice Fang hits plenty of Mons for SE damage, it gives Gyarados so much more coverage.

Hi pretty solid team here, I just have a couple optimizations to make on some of your sets.

I would really encourage you to run Offensive Latias over your current one. To be frank bulky Latias isn't very viable and it does crap for damage uninvested and with Dragon Pulse. You need the power to be able to actually threaten stuff like Mega Venusaur and Kyurem-B. It just kind of Defogs then dies with your set while doing next to nothing to even offensive Pokemon. I fully agree with Rustyy 's changes on it.

I highly encourage the use of another move over Roost on Talonflame. You will rarely ever get the chance to Roost. I recommend Tailwind or Sleep Talk. Tailwind gets priority and supports the rest of the team before you sack it, Bisharp will especially appreciate it. Sleep Talk lets it switch in on Breloom, Venusaur carrying Sleep Powder, and Amoonguss (who has been getting more popular) with fewer repercussions as well as activating Sleep Clause so your other Pokemon can't be put to sleep.

Heatran should run 44 Speed EVs from SpD to outspeed the standard Mawile set so it can't hit you with Knock Off before you KO with Lava Plume, and you can also run 48 instead to speed creep other Heatran considering you are running Earth Power. Taunt or Roar are both also more beneficial to Heatran than Toxic to neuter set up Pokemon like Clefable and Zard X or keep slower setters like Tyranitar or other Heatran from setting up Rocks and not have to waste momentum Defogging in Taunt's case.

You don't outspeed anything significant with Jolly Gyarados, I recommend an Adamant nature instead for more power. Taunt and Ice Fang are both pretty nifty but Stone Edge can also be very beneficial in that spot considering you are actually pretty weak to Kyurem-B.

I'm not seeing too many ways to get around the KyuB weakness without just opening more holes, but I suppose Lead Terrakion over Heatran can work. It can Taunt other hazard leads, set up Rocks, and still check Zard Y and Ferrothorn just like your Heatran did in addition to giving you another solid check to Kyurem-B and lift some pressure off of Latias to do so (who is more concerned with hazard control anyway).
This addition would also give your team a more offensive pace to it that Heatran kind of slowed down (at least Rotom-W has Volt Switch). This does open you up to M-Gard but you have enough offense on your team to minimize it's time on the field.
