[SET COMMENTS]
Specially Defensive Heatran is a useful Pokémon in helping to stave off the myriad of special attackers in the metagame such as Latios and Sinistcha. Earth Power is important in this set as it allows Heatran to hit opposing Heatran, as well as hitting Skeledirge and Arcanine-Hisui super-effectively. Dark Pulse is used to aid Heatran in wearing down Latios and Slowking more easily. Alternatively, Taunt can be extremely useful in conjuction with Magma Storm, which can effectively trap and remove walls like the aforementioned Slowking, as well as Toxapex. 44 Speed EVs allow Heatran to outspeed uninvested Mandibuzz and Sinistcha, which can allow Heatran to stop Roost from Mandibuzz, as well as shutting down Sinistcha's Calm Mind sets. Flame Body can be used to punish contact attackers, especially U-Turn users like Lokix. Flash Fire can also be used, which allows Heatran to take on Skeledirge much more easily. Both Tera Ghost and Fairy allow Heatran to become immune to Fighting-type attacks from Pokemon such as Slither Wing and Conkeldurr. Tera Ghost also allows Heatran to become a spinblocker that can take on the common Rapid Spin users, such as Excadrill and Donphan. Alternatively, Tera Fairy grants Heatran a fantastic defensive typing, allowing it to handle threats like Iron Jugulis. However, using Tera comes with the downside of sacrificing Heatran’s amazing defensive typing and makes you worse versus many things. For instance, using Tera means you can’t answer Latios as safely as before, so Tera should only be used in emergency.
Heatran best fits on bulky offense and balance structures, with teammates that can help Heatran with its weaknesses to threats like Keldeo. One phenomenal partner for it is Skarmory. Skarmory gives a partner that can directly swap into the Ground-types that threaten Heatran, such as Excadrill and Donphan. In return, Heatran provides a pivot into Skeledirge, and can stack Stealth Rock on top of Skarmory's Spikes. Assault Vest Tornadus-T is another good partner for it, as it provides a check to both Greninja and Keldeo, who can otherwise threaten Heatran. Finally, seeing as Heatran's longevity comes only from Leftovers, having a way to remove hazards is of great appreciation from Heatran. Excadrill can Rapid Spin hazards away, and using Heatran comes with the benefit of having a way to directly threaten Skarmory, who completely walls Excadrill. Excadrill comes with the benefit with the ability of using Stealth Rocks so Heatran doesn’t have to, so Heatran can slot Dark Pulse easier.
