Thanks to its solid defensive stats, great typing, and high Special Attack, Moltres functions as a specially defensive check to many of the tier's strong special attackers while also being able to threaten good damage with Desolate Land. Desolate Land prevents Swampert and Primarina from switching out with Flip Turn and lets Moltres check Water-type attackers like Ogerpon-W and Primarina. Weather Ball is generally the preferred Fire-type move of choice due to its higher strength and ability to hit Primordial Sea Zapdos, but Flamethrower hits Bulletproof Iron Treads. Scorching Sands hits Iron Moth, Well-Baked Body Gholdengo, and Bulletproof Iron Treads when using Weather Ball while annoying most switch-ins with a potential burn, whereas Solar Beam nails Water-types like Manaphy, Swampert, and Primarina. U-turn hits Roaring Moon and provides valuable access to pivoting, while Roost grants Moltres with longevity against strong special attackers like Scream Tail, Iron Moth, and Choice Specs Primarina.

Moltres is best suited for offense and balance teams due to its defensive prowess. Bulletproof Iron Treads checks with special attackers like Zapdos, Gholdengo, and Latios for Moltres; in return, it deals with Iron Moth and Primarina, making Iron Treads a good partner. Physical attackers such as Zamazenta, Roaring Moon, and Kingambit are quite threatening to Moltres, so checks to them like Pecharunt, Corviknight, and Great Tusk are much appreciated. The latter two are also Knock Off absorbers and entry hazard removers, which Moltres requires, as it is heavily reliant on its Heavy-Duty Boots and it needs hazard removal in the scenario it loses its item. Hazard setters such as Great Tusk, Garchomp, and Ting-Lu benefit Moltres greatly, as they allowing Moltres to have an easier time chipping down foes.

Thanks to its solid defensive stats, noteworthy what noteworthy utility moves.... its basically just sands fishing for burn utility moves, and high Special Attack, Moltres functions as a specially defensive check to many of the tier's strong special attackers while also being able to threaten good damage with Desolate Land + Weather Ball might be worthwhile generalising to deso boosted fire moves. Desolate Land prevents Swampert and Primarina from switching out with Flip Turn and lets Moltres check Water-type attackers like Ogerpon-W and Primarina. Scorching Sands hits Iron Moth, Bulletproof Iron Treads, and Well-Baked Body Gholdengo also probably worth changing treads and gholds spot to mention that it hits treads when using wball while annoying most switch-ins with a potential burn, whereas Solar Beam nails Water-types like Manaphy, Swampert, and Primarina. U-turn hits Roaring Moon and provides valuable access to pivoting, while Roost grants Moltres with longevity against strong special attackers like Scream Tail, Iron Moth, and Choice Specs Primarina.
