Choice Specs Kyurem uses it's great mixed bulk and high Special Attack along with Choice Specs to deal with many threats in the 1v1 metagame like Rillaboom, Dracovish and non-Choice Specs Primarina. Draco Meteor hits Dragons-types like Kommo-o as well as being Kyurem's strongest move versus neutral targets like Zeraora. Ice Beam is used agaisnt targets that resist or are immune to Draco Meteor or are weak to Ice Beam like Rillaboom or Skarmory. Freeze-Dry is used as it is stronger than Draco Meteor against many Water-types, most notably Primarina and Dracovish. Focus Blast is used against Steel-types like Ferrothorn that Kyurem is unable to KO otherwise, as well as Choice Band Snorlax. 248 HP EVs and 4 Def EVs allow Kyurem to always survive a Choice Band-boosted Outrage from Zeraora, while 248 HP EVs and 192 SpD EVs allow Kyurem to always survive a Choice Specs-boosted Moonblast from the standard Primarina spread. 60 Spe EVs allow Kyurem to outspeed Jolly base 60 Speed Pokemon like Primarina.
Kyurem is weak against many faster Dragon-types in 1v1 like Haxorus and Dragapult due to the fact it cannot survive a super-effective STAB attack even with it's great bulk. A bulky Fairy-type like Assault Vest Primarina or Yawn Protect Sylveon can help deal with these threats. Kyurem threatens Grass- and Electric-type Pokemon for Primarina and Fire-types and many Taunt users for Sylveon. Kyurem is also vulnerable to faster Choice item users like Choice Specs Porygon-Z and Choice Band Galarian Darmanitan. Thus, Kyurem appreciates a Sturdy user like Magnezone or Crustle to help against these threats. Kyurem covers Ground-types and physically defensive Pokemon for Crustle, and Electric and Ground-types for Magnezone. Despite being able to hit Choice Specs Primarina super-effectively with Freeze-Dry, it does not OHKO and a Choice Specs-boosted Moonblast OHKOs back. While Kyurem would usually beat Skarmory, a set with Torment and Protect can force Kyurem to struggle, and thus lose. Taunt Zeraora can deal with these threats suitably.
