Project SS RU Next Best Thing - On break

Thank you to everyone who participated this week! For the sake of time and moving on to the next week of submissions, I'm declaring this week as a tie between RoarCune by TailGlowVM and Weakness Policy Suicune by Yourwelcomethanku! Congratulations to both of you! Your sets will be added to the hall of fame.

Now, moving onto our next Pokemon!
:bw/snorlax:
Snorlax has a solid niche in the RU metagame as a defensive pivot and set-up sweeper that takes advantage of its great natural bulk and decent typing when paired with Thick Fat in order to check a number of weaker offensive threats and use them as opportunities to set up and sweep. However, what else can this sleeping bear do? Let's find out! Submissions will be open until Sunday at about 12pm -8 UTC.
Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Def / 252 SpD

Ability: Immunity
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Earthquake
- Body Slam

Sub punch
Snorlax has lots of defensive utility letting it find opportunity to set up sub where it can proceed to Focus Punch afterwards. This is in fact not very useful as your giving up 2 moveslots and Focus Punch doesn't actually hit much that EQ doesn't.

Snorlax @ Choice Band

EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 76 Def / 92 SpD / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Double-Edge
- Superpower
- Heavy Slam
- Crunch

CB Snorlax saw some light usage earlier this gen as a CB Bewear knockoff but with more defensive utility and to surprise the usual CurseLax answers. Superpower has a high chance to 2HKO Rhyperior after Stealth Rock and hits of our Steel-types the hardest while OHKOing Zarude. Heavy Slam is mainly filler to OHKO max HP Togekiss so you need to not be flinched just once. Crunch hits Metagross, Bronzong, and Ghost-types. Crunch is chosen over Darkest Lariat because it helps against Polteageist. Speed is for uninvested Rhyperior and the Defense EVs are to avoid the 2HKO from Darmanitan's Flare Blitz after Rocks.

Whirlpool Trapper
:ss/snorlax:
Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat / Immunity
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Def / 244 SpD
Careful Nature
- Whirlpool
- Toxic
- Strength
- Protect

Did you know that Snorlax learns Whirlpool? I didn't before this and I realised it could be used as an interesting lure to trap in Pokemon that can't KO it easily with its insane bulk. Toxic is used for the reliable chip damage to help with trapping. Strength is run because it avoids making Snorlax completely passive (chosen over the usual Body Slam as paralysis is contradictory to the function of this set). Protect allows it to get extra Leftovers recovery and chip damage. I suppose Encore might work, but I can't find a place for it on the set. While Thick Fat is likely the best ability for this set to preserve Snorlax's usual utility, Immunity is backslashed as you are mostly going to be trapping passive defensive Pokemon, which often carry Toxic.

The Official Floor Mat of Rarley Used
Specslax (Snorlax) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Beam
- Blizzard
- Hydro Pump
- Fire Blast

(tnx to ywt 4 set improvement)

This is the result of precision Snorlax engineering. This set is custom-tuned for all my genwunners and gen 2 fans out there. Do u miss clicking hyper beam on lax? well, now u can and u can do so with enjoyment. I was going to use ice beam, flamethrower, and surf however ywt made me realize something crazy. He told me "more power more gooder". After he told me that, we swapped out the fully accurate moves for Blizzard, pump, and f blast cuz it's gooder. Now go out there gen 1 and 2 nation, RU ladder needs you.

Amnesia Snorlax

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Amnesia
- Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Rest

Here we have a variation of a regular Snorlax that is focused on its 2nd best trait: the base 110 SpD coupled with a gigantic 160 base HP.
Dropping Curse is really huge, but I think that it is really worthy because Amnesia allows Snorlax to gain a lot more staying power towards SpA attackers (those unable to 2HKO it after a +2 SpD boost), especially with Rest to recharge its own hp and status.
We miss some 2HKOs and OHKOs at +1 Atk, but I think that this can be acceptable because this set, albeit niche, has a lot of potential as a defensive approach.

For example:
  • 252 SpA Choice Specs Chandelure Fire Blast vs. +2 12 HP / 252+ SpD Thick Fat Snorlax: 51-60 (10.9 - 12.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Specs Chandelure is now unable to 2HKO Snorlax, thus making it Rest a (more) reliable option.
  • +6 252 SpA Raikou Aura Sphere vs. +2 12 HP / 252+ SpD Snorlax: 216-256 (46.5 - 55.1%) -- 11.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
a +6 supereffective move is not able to 2HKO Snorlax reliably.
The EVs spread is stolen from the pokedex and it is meant to boost its defences while optimizing the Leftovers recovery

Team(mates) support
Hazards control is always nice to avoid unnecessary damage, while Wish support helps Snorlax to set-up more easily.
A way to deal properly with physical threats is mandatory, though.

Phazelax

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 144 HP / 188 Def / 176 SpD
Careful Nature
- Body Slam
- Whirlwind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This set aims to spread para via Body Slam and to stack residual damage with Whirlwind. Whirlwind also prevents any set up your opponent might try. although snorlax is slow the ability to paralyse and forgo the negative priority of phazing moves can come in handy. Rest is for longlivety and Sleep Talk ensures you're no sitting Duck while asleep.

As a phazer and rest user the set appreciates Spikes and Heal Hell support for example Roserade could do both. Knock off would be another crucial part of the team to get rid of some boots.

Lastly the EVs avoid 3hko from from Xurk, Specs Chandy, Scarf Darm and non boosted Focus Blast Reuni (be wary of Life Orb variants).

All in all a niche set with high fun potential.

Thanks for sharing your sets everybody!

Thank you to everyone who participated! This week's winner is Choice Specs by A floor Mat! Congratulations, your set will be added to the Hall of Fame!

Let's move on to the next Pokémon!
:bw/rhyperior:
Rhyperior is one of the premier Stealth Rock setters of the RU metagame, utilizing its typing and rock-solid natural bulk in conjunction with its ability Solid Rock to serve as an effective defensive check to many of the tier's most threatening Pokémon while still having a strong offensive presence. But what else can this thing do? Let's find out!
Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Atk / 240 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Megahorn

Rhyperior @ Choice Band
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Megahorn
- Ice Punch

Curse Rhyperior
:ss/rhyperior:
Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Rock Blast
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Curse Rhyperior takes advantage of its insane natural physical bulk and high Attack stat even uninvested to become a threatening late game sweeper. A specially defensive EV spread is used so that Rhyperior can better switch into the usual stuff it checks like Toxtricity and Chandelure, though usually you won't want to set up until special attackers are heavily weakened or eliminated. Rock Blast is the best attack Rhyperior has for this set because it's fairly accurate and has higher PP than Stone Edge and no immunities unlike Earthquake. RestTalk and Leftovers provide the most consistent recovery available.

:dp/rhyperior:

Cobalion but with an attack stat (Rhyperior) @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 184 Atk / 92 SpD / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Polish
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Megahorn

Rock Polish rhyperior was used a fair amount in the screens meta. In this meta, it still has potential for a small place on webs, as with webs, it beats mienshao and zarude at +2. Jolly allows it to outspeed all flyings except crobat at +2 and it resists crobat's brave bird. The evs allow rhyperior to outspeed standard talonflame at +2, and always ohko mienshao with eq. the rest of the evs go into spedef to better set up on togekiss

SD 3 attacks

Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 52 HP / 24 Atk / 252 SpD / 180 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Megahorn

I have loved using SD 3 attacks Rhyperior when the role of Stealth Rock was not needed. This set is very speedy gets past base 60's like gweezing Sylveon and p2. It Also outspeeds vileplume and Incineroar. This set still has max special defense investment giving Rhyperior more defensive utility it can turn into set up opportunity or letting it live just one more attack to launch of its parting blow. Rhyperior is pretty threatening when it sets up SD many pokemon that could take one hit from it like Steelix, Cobalion, or Registeel will just get dropped by a SD boosted attack. SD is also notable for ripping right past Gastrodon and Flygon. in terms of teammates Pokemon that can pivot it into opposing Pokemon that it can set up on are good like Noivern, Crobat, Celebi, or Zarude. These pokemon are able to pivot on walls like Togekiss, Diancie, and Stakataka to bring in Rhyperior.

Iron Defense Rhyperior
:ss/rhyperior:
Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 8 Def / 248 SpD
Careful Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Iron Defense Rhyperior takes advantage of its insane natural physical bulk to become a threatening late game sweeper when Ghosts are gone.
A specially defensive EV spread is used because Rhyperior can better switch into the SpAttackers while setting up its Def with a +2 boost every time.
Body Press is the perfect move for a set like this because it checks the Def and, in the meanwhile, you check better physical attackers between RestTalk and Leftovers.

Rest is mandatory to get rid of burns that ruins our strategy.

A way to get rid of Ghosts is mandatory because we can't touch them.
