Break This Team v2
Welcome to the second edition of Break This Team for SS UU! While a lot of metagame-defining teams may seem perfect, in reality all teams have their selection of poor matchups, and in this project your goal will be to spot the weak links in teams chosen by the host(s). Each week, a new team will be posted that was built by a member of the UU community, and as participants your goal will be to try and find a core of 2 Pokemon that breaks this team efficiently.

This project will involve two different phases each week: a submission phase lasting 4-5 days where participants will be given the opportunity to submit their cores, and a voting phase lasting 2-3 days where people may vote for their favourite cores. If you win a week, you will be added to our hall of fame!

I am always looking for teams to use for this project, so if you would like to help out please do contact me on Discord (Saria#4720), as all help will be greatly appreciated!

Rules
  • Please do not post one-liners. When providing a description for your core, you do not need to write an elaborate essay, but 2-3 lines of description explaining how the core performs against the team is a good amount to aim for.
  • This is not a counterteaming competition. The host(s) reserve the right to reject submissions if they do not involve sets or Pokemon considered viable enough in the metagame. The goal here is to submit viable, functional cores that would work in the current metagame and that the team of the week is weak to. Cores must also have synergy with each other, a core of Quagsire + Terrakion for instance would not be acceptable as they fit on completely different playstyles.
  • Participants are only allowed to post one core with only two Pokemon.
  • Reservations are allowed, but must be completed within 24 hours of posting. After this time, other participants are allowed to take these cores.
  • In order to encourage creativity and more originality between submissions, the same Pokemon may only be used two times in the same submission round. Cores will only be considered identical to each other if the sets are the same; minor moveset changes may be subject to being considered a copy however.
  • Please do not try to manipulate or rally voting. If you are caught doing this, you will be prevented from taking part in the project anymore until decided otherwise.
  • You may not vote for your own core.

"This is a rain team featuring some incredibly scary rain wallbreakers and cleaners in CB Azumarill, LO Kingdra, LO Seismitoad, and NP Thundy-T. Seismitoad is a nice choice for a SR setter on a team like this, helping with the Electric mus, especially Zeraora, while providing extra speed control. LO Kingdra is something I prefer over Specs, as despite the slight power drop it becomes much harder to play around, and you can't just pivot around it with stuff like Amoong / AV Tang / Latias etc as easily. SD U-turn Scizor provides nice defensive utility, a latias check, nice momentum to support the wallbreakers, and can clean late game along with Kingdra. Politoed's set for the most part isn't a huge concern as its only really used to set Rain, but perish trap can be a pain for fat teams to deal with and provides some utility versus some set up sweepers. NP Thundy-T rounds off the team with a terriying Rain wallbreaker, secondary Electric-immunity, and another way to pressure Grass-types"

To kick off the revival of this project for the post DLC2 meta, the first team is provided by me (or more accurately a team I played around with for someone in UU room). If you would like too submit a team for the next week(s) do please get in touch!

Gyarados @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Stun Spore / Foul Play
Gyarados is able to set up on Choice-locked Azumarill or Scizor and runs through the whole team if Rain is not up. Amoonguss can give Gyarados more opportunities to set up with Spore and is a nuisance for Rain in general. Stun Spore Amoonguss can cripple Kingdra switching in thinking it can safely sponge a hit after giving up sleep fodder so Gyarados can finish it off with a boosted Power Whip even under Rain. Foul Play is not too hard to drop with Gyarados beating Scizor, but not like Stun Spore is necessary anyway.

Kyurem @ Heavy-Duty Boots

EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 76 HP / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Teleport

This looked like a fun core to try, so I thought I'd submit it. The way to use this core is to bring in Magnezone on Choice-locked Azumarill or Scizor. Magnezone can then choose to either Thunder the Scizor and do huge amounts of damage (the EVs are speed crept to outspeed 200 Spe Scizor) or Teleport as the Scizor U-turns to Seismitoad or Thundurus-T. If Magnezone Teleports, you then bring in Kyurem to hit either Seismitoad or Thundurus-T with Freeze-Dry. Freeze-Dry alone isn't enough to OHKO Thundurus-T, but you can Flash Cannon it with Magnezone the next time it comes in. After Thundurus-T and Seismitoad have been removed, Magnezone is free to spam Volt Switch and Thunder. Analytic is the ability of choice since Scizor can just U-turn out of Magnezone. Kyurem's Heavy-Duty Boots let it avoid the OHKO from Thundurus-T's Focus Blast after Stealth Rock. Roost also helps to avoid being too weakened by Azu's Aqua Jet

This feels totally cheap but Imma do it anyways:

:ss/Torkoal: :ss/Venusaur:

Torkoal @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock

Venusaur @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Growth
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Weather Ball

So this basically just runs down the entire team. Torkoal sets up sun to ruin the rain, and rocks for constant residual damage, and Venusaur sweeps everything. Politoed can't switch into Venusaur to reup rain or else it gets Giga'd. Even if Rain is up, Venusaur still does 80-90% damage to Scizor AND Thundurus with Water Weather Ball, unboosted. To summarize: Sun goes up. Venusaur comes in. Politoed can't come back in so easily. The only real play would be to sac something and bring Politoed in on a clean turn, then switch out again and sac something else since Venusaur still shreds in rain (just is slower), then after saccing something bring in Kingdra clean on rain. But then you can just switch back out to Torkoal and reset the whole cycle, and the rain team can only realistically handle this once. And this is just if the team was ONLY Torkoal and Venusaur against 6 mons - with 4 other mons it will be a total decimation.

Breaking the tie for this week again, since Pokeseba decided to create a new tie literally seconds before I posted new round. Will be voting for Avarice as DD Gyarados is a huge threat to this team if given set up opportunities, and will usually force at least 1-2 sacks to be able to revenge it, while Amoonguss is a general threat with sleep and being a good check to a bunch of the mons.

While sun is a big threat, this team has definite ways of dealing with it, as Sun teams will struggle also to switch into the Kingdra unless they have Chansey which wasn't mentioned, and Kingdra can still drop devastating Draco's even after Sun is up if Torkoal managed to come in on it. Torkoal can also struggle to reset Sun directly against Politoed due to being a Perish Trap set which can put the Sun team in a similarly bad position to automatically deal with your threats as easily.

avarice takes the first week with his Amoonguss + DD Gyarados submission! This week's team is from me again as I wanted to get this out soon after Latias results, but will be diversifying the teams more from next week!

"This team features the combination of Taunt Hex Chandelure + SubToxic Jirachi, a nasty offensive core of status abusers. This specific Chandelure set tends to 6-0 Stall teams without Umbreon off the bat, making it a fantastic choice for ladder play atm. SubToxic Jirachi pairs nicely providing a second toxic user, and is an underrated set right now that can be extremely annoying to play against. Krookodile and Zeraora support Jirachi by Knocking Off Rocky Helmets from fat Grass types and Skarmory, while helping to put enormous pressure on offensive teams. Salamence offers useful defensive utility as a Keldeo and Victini check, and Defog support incase of Spikes MU's where Jirachi doesn't want to be worn down. Tapu Bulu rounds off the team providing Grassy terrain for Chandelure and Jirachi, Zeraora check, and nice wallbreaker that appreciates Chandelure and Jirachi greatly pressuring its checks like Skarm and Grasses."

Toxtricity has been forgotten a bit with all the sand castle spam but it's still pretty decent imo so I decided to break out a DLC 1 core. Toxtricity + Zarude can really do a number to the team. Toxtricity kinda runs through the whole team once its boosted thanks to a Throat Spray boost. It can set up on locked SR krookodile, try its luck vs Jirachi, threaten Bulu out with potential Sludge Wave or stomach a hit from Chandelure/Mence if after the opposing team has been worn down. Zarude itself is pretty solid and against Chandelure + Jirachi + Krookodile and can U-turn on the Tapu Bulu switch in.

Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet

Nihilego pressures Chandelure, Salamence, and Tapu Bulu very very well, especially since Chandy is Toxic and not Will-O-Wisp. It can revenge kill weakened Zeraora and 2HKOes Krook with Grass Knot. Thunderbolt is there so it isn't completely and utterly walled by Jirachi. Tangrowth tanks hits from the physical attackers for Nihilego, especially Tapu Bulu and Krookodile. Sleep Powder is always nice and Knock Off removes Heavy-Duty Boots from Zeraora and Chandelure and Leftovers from Jirachi, leaving them prone to hazards and chip, which helps wear them down for Nihilego.

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

- Secret Sword
- Icy Wind
- Flip Turn

Clangorous Soul Kommo-o absolutely murks this team after boosting, OHKOing everything except Jirachi. It can also freely boost against Chandelure and Tapu Bulu. Scarf Keldeo prevents lead Krookodile from knocking off Kommo-o's Throat Spray which would otherwise prevent it from sweeping this team, while also putting Jirachi in range for +2 Flamethrower after one Secret Sword (and beating it 1 on 1). Keldeo is capable of putting major damage on Salamence (18.8% chance to OHKO with Icy Wind), and even if it does not KO, Salamence will now be slower than Kommo-o and severely weakened, allowing Keldeo's teammates to chance Salamence away once Keldeo faints to Hurricane, giving Kommo-o the chance to come in safely and set up to sweep. Zeraora and Tapu Bulu are also not OHKOd by Scarf Keldeo but Icy Wind will again slow them down so that Kommo-o's teammates can chase them away after Keldeo faints. Finally, Chandelure has to run from Keldeo, fearing Hydro Pump. As a bonus, Scarf Keldeo can bring Kommo-o in safely with Flip Turn on a predicted switch out.

terrakion pretty much nails every single mon that this team has, jirachi having no recovery makes it ever so easier to wear down with repeated attacks, salamence is not wanting to take a switch in, Swords dance to take advantage of switches. Krookidile is a zera "check" and is able to knock the team around to help soften it up for terrakion to clean it up after. Bulu also cannot afford to take stone edge's and repeated hits from krookidile making it worse at checking this core

congratulations to avarice for winning with their Toxtricity + Zarude submission! As he rightly notes, Zarude with a Choice Scarf is great at threatening out lots of members of this team, and can easily put Toxtricity into the position to clean late game, bringing it in to set up on Bulu and Salamence, who is also a really big threat to this team as it can easily clean through at +2.

This week's team comes from Twilight! Featuring Terrakion while it's currently being suspected.

"This team is built with the deadly combination of Special Victini and LO Terrakion with solid VoltTurn support. Rotom-W and Scizor can easily bring Victini in on the tiers popular Grass-types and Steel-types for wallbreaking opportunities, while Victini and Scizor can help bring Terrakion in on Salamence. Rotom-W, Amoonguss, and Scizor provide a solid defensive backbone that can help to cover threats like Scarf Krook, Zeraroa,Terrak, and Alakazam that can pressure the offensive core, while Scarf Krookodile provides a great offensive check to Poemon like Zeraora, Alakazam, and opposing Terrakion for the team. SD Scizor provides a potent win condition that appreciates having its checks like Rotoms and Salamence consistently pressured by the offensive core."
Please submit your cores by Friday!

Conkeldurr is extremely tough for this team to switch into, with facade doing over half to Amoonguss, and difficult for Scizor and Terrakion to punish, who already take a lot. The spread allows it to outspeed 0 speed prim, which is independant of this MU, but I personally like the extra HP to get more mileage out of drain punch, which is very helpful for healing off rocky helmet damage. Mew provides rocks that are unfoggable and help weaken amoongusses ability to regen off facade and give rocky helmet chip, and also provides a good check to Victini threatening with knock + rocks. With rocks damage, conk is setup for potential endgame mach punch sweeps, especially since Victini has a hard time all game. Knock mew is also MUCH safer vs no SD terrakion, and generally will-o is really free to spam here, crippling Zor, Krook and Terrakion immensely.

Crawdaunt @ Life Orb

I decided to take advantage of the team's lack of hazard removal of course. Offensive Kommo-o does heaps of damage to this team, always 2HKOing Amoonguss and OHKOing Scizor with Flamethrower and 2HKOing Rotom-W with Clanging Scales (CC 2HKOes too but lowering your SpDef is stupid plus you don't care abt willo). CC OHKOes Terrak and Clanging Scales chips Victini into range of Crawdaunt's Aqua Jet if you need it but Kommo-o being healthy is hard because of LO and chip. I chose Crawdaunt as a partner since not a single member of this team can switch in without having to predict once rocks are up, but you have to be careful about Amoonguss's Rocky Helmet, hazards, and LO recoil to avoid staying out of BP range from Scizor. Rotom-W and Scizor are always KOed by Knock Off into Aqua Jet and Krook has a very good chance to be, Amoong can't take two Knock Offs in a row, and Victini and Terrakion will always avoid switching in directly. If Crawdaunt gets a chance to setup with Swords Dance, its basically over unless you just spam Intimidate which means you have to keep sacrificing things. This pair definitely appreciates some pivot support from Pokemon like Zeraora and Slowking to bring in Crawdaunt safely.
