SS Doubles OU Stakataka trick room

Introduction

I wanted to build a trick room team focused around a weakness policy sweeper, this has ended up being stakataka with the rest of the team focusing on supporting this through removing threats to it, setting up trick room and activating the weakness policy. It is also capable of fighting if stakataka is lost early though.

The Team

torkoal.png

Torkoal @ Charcoal
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Eruption
- Earth Power
- Heat Wave
- Protect
It's main job is fairly obvious considering its a torkoal. It takes out fire weak stuff, the focus being grass types. It partners well with both of the trick room setters allowing it to function even if the battle was taking a bad turn.

uxie.png

Uxie @ Mental Herb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 188 Def / 68 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Trick Room
- Energy Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Punch
The more offensive of the two trick room setters. While it doesn't do much damage, it is certainly helpful. While it is less bulky and does less damage then porygon 2, it doesn't need eviolite meaning I can bring mental herb to block taunt. This does make me a lot more vulnerable to losing it to a double target though.

conkeldurr.png

Conkeldurr @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch
- Brick Break
- Knock Off
Intended to be brought in with trick room up or to finish a kill outside of it. It doesn't have much coverage but it has a use for each move. Brick break is less necessary but it has been almost necessary against the teams that bring screens. Its best pair was porygon 2 before I changed it to uxie so I now bring it in alongside the other attacker, preferable stakataka or pinchurchin as they can deal with flying types for it and hit most psychic types hard enough to let it be safe to go for whichever target it wants.

stakataka.png

Stakataka @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Lonely Nature
IVs: 14 Def / 0 Spe
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Protect
The main sweeper. It used to be a rhyperior but I swapped it for less weaknesses. It has lowered defence so that beast boost will raise attack, making it more and more dangerous as it gets kills. The main point of this set is for it to become almost unstoppable if the opponent lets it get going while still being a major problem if they stop it sweeping.

dusclops.png

Dusclops @ Eviolite
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Bulldoze
- Helping Hand
- Protect
Its main partner is stakataka but helping hand means it is not dead weight if stakataka dies as it can still partner very well with torkoal. Bulldoze is to activate weakness policy. I chose dusclops specifically because high defences and immunity to fake out makes it difficult to stop it setting trick room. While taunt and similar moves still work, uxie is here to stop that one.

pincurchin.png

Pincurchin @ Choice Specs
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rising Voltage
- Muddy Water
- Venoshock
- Recover
Pinchurchin stops sleep, grassy glide priority and psychic terrain. It otherwise usually just spams rising voltage except when facing a grass/fairy when it uses venoshock. Recover is only on here for when its specs get knocked off and muddy water is here because it needed a fourth move.

Conclusion

The teams problems are getting out-damaged such as losing the trick room setter to a double target, taunt/similar when using porygon 2 rather than uxie or fake out whenever not using dusclops but it is still a problem as it always will be.

The sets for porygon 2 and rhyperior I was using (plus some other options based on how the team has worked after changing them) in case they make better options than what I am trying.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Trick Room
- Recover

Rhyperior @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Earthquake/High Horsepower
- Rock Slide
- Iron Head/Hammer Arm
- Protect/Hammer Arm

Hopefully the formatting is okay, this is my first time using the formatting tool.

I think you're mistaken, this is the SS OU Singles Forum, not SS DOU. If you want to post this, please go to the appropriate Forum for the subject and delete / let mods take down the post here.

Are you sure? This is SS OU and it days that SS-other (the only other section in rmt I've seen) is for non-OU. If this actually is for only singles OU, where is the doubles OU?

Ok, thank you, I'll also just put my post in the other ss rmt section for now, the other place seems to be for teams that are a little more developed :p
Ok, sounds good, glad I could help, btw, I am liking playing with your team, I think it has some potential on the ladder, I am currently at 1206 with it and I am just starting.

Hi Haggis77

I’m really happy you’re taking an interest in Doubles OU, and I’d highly recommend you check out the viability rankings as they’re a great starting point for teambuilding - especially as you’re using quite a few Pokémon that aren’t included in the VR: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/ss-doubles-ou-viability-rankings-v-2.3673519/

Onto your team! A team solely dedicated to TR can be very difficult in the current metagame due to the prevalence of fake out and bulky Pokémon that can stall out TR turns. However I think you have a very clever approach with using bulldoze + weakness policy, and with a few small changes we can make this team one to be feared.

The first change I’d recommend is instead of using pinchurrichin to stop sleep, we focus on putting opponents to sleep and bring our own Amoonguss. Amoonguss is great on TR teams not just for its ability to put opponents to sleep, but also because it can use ragepowder and redirect your opponents attacks to aid in setting up TR and protect your attackers. (Just remember that ragepowder doesn’t redirect opposing grass types or any Pokémon that resists powder moves either through abilities or safety goggles).
We can run the smogdex set:
Amoonguss @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 232 HP / 88 Def / 188 SpD
Calm Nature
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Pollen Puff
- Protect

The next change I’d make is swapping out the Uxie for a more offensive TR setter in Diancie. You generally want at least one offensive TR setter that can bring the offense immediately after setting TR. Diancie is one of the most feared Pokémon in the metagame, able to steamroll unprepared teams. It also has great synergy with Dusclops, as it resists Dark, and dominates Incineroar which the rest of your team struggles against. Here’s one of my favorite sets:
Diancie @ Hard Stone
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Brave Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Body Press
- Trick Room
- Protect

The last Pokémon I’d recommend changing out is Conkeldurr, as it doesn’t beat much in the metagame, and doesn’t solve a lot of the problems TR teams have. We need something to help with Fake Out, and that’s why I’d recommend we run Tsareena. Tsareena’s ability queenly majesty blocks all priority moves, such as Fake Out, Rillaboom’s Grassy Glide in Grassy Terrain, and priority taunt from Pokémon like Whimsicott and Tornadus. Tsareena is also one of the best Zygarde counters, which your team really struggles with. It also can counter opposing Amoonguss either through triple axel or by taunting them. Here’s my recommended spread. 96 Adamant guarantees Power Whip will One Hit Ko Urshifu-Rapid Strike, and that Triple Axel will One Hit Ko bulky Zygarde if it hits 3 times.
Tsareena @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Queenly Majesty
EVs: 248 HP / 96 Atk / 220 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Brave Nature
- Power Whip
- U-turn
- Triple Axel
- Taunt

Lastly I’d recommend a couple small changes to your other Pokémon:
On Stakataka I’d recommend running Steel Roller over Earthquake so it can remove opposing terrains, which can be very powerful when used with Amoonguss to remove Misty and Electric Terrain. Earthquake is not a move I’d recommend in Doubles, as it’s weakened by grassy terrain, and hits your partners as well.

On Dusclops, I’d recommend changing it to a negative speed nature, such as Sassy. Then I’d remove Protect on Dusclops, and replace it with Pain Split. Pain Split Dusclops can dramatically weaken opponents, while healing itself allowing it to survive to set multiple Trick Rooms.

So here’s the updated team: https://pokepast.es/a828ba5b80e9bd61
Torkoal @ Charcoal
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe

- Earth Power
- Heat Wave

Stakataka @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Lonely Nature
IVs: 14 Def / 0 Spe
- Rock Slide
- Steel Roller
- Gyro Ball
- Protect

Dusclops @ Eviolite
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Bulldoze
- Helping Hand
- Pain Split

Diancie @ Hard Stone
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Diamond Storm
- Body Press
- Trick Room
- Protect

Amoonguss @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 232 HP / 88 Def / 188 SpD
Calm Nature
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Pollen Puff

Tsareena @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Queenly Majesty
EVs: 248 HP / 96 Atk / 220 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- U-turn
- Triple Axel
- Taunt

Other possible changes could include making either Diancie or Torkoal hold weakness policies to also be able to take advantage of bulldoze. If you have any questions, you can always ask in the Pokémon showdown doubles room, or reach out to me. Hope this helps!

These look like some great changes, my only concern is if I'd be able to bring torkoal into steels because they can often hit it hard on switch in so I'd be worried about it dying.

That’s a very good point - steels are one of TR’s biggest concerns. Thankfully the most common steel types, Genesect and Kartana, Torkoal can easily switch in on and beat.

The next most common is Heatran, which does pose a significant challenge to most TR teams. Your best bet against a heatran is probably leading Amoonguss + Diancie, and having Amoonguss ragepowder to take all the damage and faint while you set up TR, thus giving you a free switch in to your Torkoal who can then earth power it, which when combined with Diancie’s diamond storm, should easily KO it.

Other steels such as Metagross & Celesteela Torkoal can easily beat. The last main steel in the tier, opposing Stakataka, is definitely a tough matchup for any TR team, as it’s the slowest Pokémon in the tier. This is a great example of why Amoonguss is so pivotal to TR teams - it can either neuter threats through spore, or redirect their attacks, allowing things like Diancie to beat Stakataka with body press.

Ultimately bulky steels are one of the big issues for dedicated TR teams, and one of the reasons why it’s not commonly run in gen 8 (I believe it saw one appearance in the lower tier premier league, and hasn’t been used in the doubles premier league). However this can give you an advantage, as some teams aren’t prepared for it, which is why it’s considered a “matchup fish”. If you get good at playing it, dedicated TR can be very challenging for opposing players.

Hope this helps!

I just got to testing the team and the tsareena set has 54 too many EVs, what should I reduce for this?
