Starter OU Team

Here's my team made up only of Pokemon starters from the different games. I say it's OU, but really it is 1 OU, 3 BL, and 2 UU. However, it has been very successful so far against standard teams! Please only suggest replacements that are starter pokemon (so that leaves you with only 6 to choose from!)

The team has quite a stally feel to it, but then Bellyzard lurking in the ranks changes all that.

General strategy - Infernape gets the rocks down, and either takes one pokemon down and is feinted or is withdrawn for later use. Swtich to Empoleon/Torterra to wall threats. Get Blastoise in to Rapid Spin away the opponents rocks, and Toxic and bulky pokemon. Bring Venusaur in on any fast threats for a quick sleep or to revenge kill. After rapid spin, get Bellyzard in, Sub, Belly drum, Sweep.

Here's the team:

Infernape (M) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 48 Atk/208 Spd/252 SAtk
Naive nature (+Spd, -SDef)

- Fake Out - for a free hit
- Stealth Rock - to break sashes and help with KOs
- Fire Blast - to kill Zong, Skarm and others
- Close Combat - to destroy Blissey and anything else weak to it

Standard LeadApe. Fake out first, then Stealth Rock. Almost guaranteed to get the rocks down. Also has the advantage of scaring away leads like Zong. Can be helpful in the late game as a revenge killer with Fake out and base 108 speed.
---

Empoleon (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP/4 Spd/252 SDef
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

- Surf - for powerful STAB
- Ice Beam - for coverage on Grass and Dragons
- Grass Knot - to kill bulky waters
- Yawn - for Pseudo hazing

The team's Special Wall. Pseudo hazing with yawn to rack up Stealth Rock damage, and 3 attacks to use it's good base SpAtk.
---

Torterra (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 212 HP/252 Def/44 Spd
Impish nature (+Def, -SAtk)

- Wood Hammer - Powerful base 120 STAB
- Earthquake - STAB EQ is always good
- Leech Seed - for HP recovery and to force switches
- Protect - combines with leftovers and Leech Seed for HP recovery, and scouts choice/super effective moves.

The Physical Wall. Very sturdy, and hits hard with STAB moves. Leech Seed + Leftovers + Protect = Annoying.
---

Charizard (M) @ Salac Berry
Ability: Blaze
IVs: 30HP
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)

- Belly Drum - to raise attack to +6 for a sweep
- Fire Punch - for STAB
- Earthquake - for coverage
- Substitute - to allow me to get a Belly Drum off

2 Attack Bellyzard has swept many a Standard team for me, as few people are prepared for it these days. I switch it in on something it scares, Sub on the switch then Belly Drum, which activates the Salac (thanks to 30 HP IV), giving me +1 Speed and +6 Attack.
---

Venusaur (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 56 HP/200 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)

- Sleep Powder - a quick sleep is always good
- Leaf Storm - base 140 + STAB = pain
- Sludge Bomb - to deal with Grass types, also STAB
- Earthquake - to deal with Poison types that would otherwise wall this

ScarfSaur gives the team a fast sleep to shut down threats, and Leaf Storm does a lot of damage.
---

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/6 SAtk
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)

- Surf - so it isn't shut down by taunt and can do some damage
- Rapid Spin - to get rid of the rocks so Charizard can switch in without losing 50%
- Toxic - to wear down bulky counters
- Protect - to stall for toxic damage and leftovers recovery

The neccessary Rapid Spinner to allow BellyZard to function. Has defeated many Vaporons and even Suicunes with Toxic and Protect. Very sturdy.
---

So there's the team. Remember - only suggest starter Pokemon, but feel free to mess around with movesets and anything else.

I feel like I should have Swampert in there somewhere, but can't think who to replace as I need Blastoise's Rapid Spin.

I look forward to your opinions!

I like the theme... nice idea.
Seems like a pretty good team, I think I lost to it :-(
Maybe Swampert over Torterra as it still has the physical defence?

Thanks for the rate oj1234.
You may well have lost to it - as I say I have beaten many all-OU teams with it.
Swampert over Torterra sounds reasonable as they are both Physical attackers (or would you suggest MixPert?) and are both immune to Electric... any other ideas?

Some major threats in the current game such as Heatran, Zapdos, and Scizor each provide their own threat to you. Heatran only takes very heavy damage from Earthquake Torterra and Charizard, the first of whom he would OHKO first with Fire Blast anyway. Empoleon probably can survive an Earth Power, but I'm not sure he can OHKO back. Charizard does seem to provide a decent check for him, as well as Scizor, who can only 3HKO, at best, with one Sword Dance, but fails against Zapdos if he doesn't have Belly Drum up yet. Scizor meanwhile, can take the rest of your team decently, only fearing MixApe's Fire Blast.

While not every team will have those three threats, a lot will, and combined with Gyarados, too. Make sure you can safely counter those big 4.

Swampert certainly seems like a better wall than Torterra. Or, if you still want a Seeder, SubSeedSceptile is quick and fairly effective.

My only other suggestion is to perhaps look into finding another lead over Infernape, so you can run NPMixape as a Backup sweeper for when Charizard can't handle the job (extensive physical walling/priority moves, for example).

Yeah, another lead sounds like a good idea as then NP mixape can stop quite a few threats... what do people think about making a subseed Sceptile lead (because of its base 120 speed) and replacing torterra with NP mixape so I keep a seeder?

Also how about a Scarf Typhlosion lead, and replace Charizard with Infernape? Typhlosion's the only other starter I can think of that works well as a lead but I'm loathe to get rid of Zard.

I haven't had trouble with Scizor because he fails to do anything to Torterra who can seed+protect/eq him, and Venusaur can disable it.
Neither has Zapdos troubled me really. Scarftran is a bigger issue, but usually it is a bit weakened then Empoleon can kill it, and Venusaur is faster (I think) and can EQ it to death.
