Starters

Hello there smogonites! I am rather new to comp battling (tinkered with it in gen v, getting more serious in current), but I am a veteran to the series (being one of relatively few Americans to actually pre-order blue version). I have a main team planned and built, but now I have an idea in my head that my little bit if experience will not allow me to finish. So essentially, I have a basic idea and I would like opinions from the more experienced comp veterans. I understand this may not be the place to post this question, so I apologize ahead of time for my mistake if this is so. I am very new to these forums, so I have yet to figure out the proper places to post.

Anyways, on to the idea. Beware, this idea is more of a gimmick than anything, so take it lightly instead of just pushing it off.

Starter pokemon. Whether you always use your starter or not, everyone has a soft spot for at least one of them (I heard you like Mudkip...). I have been watching as this meta unfolds and have seen the rise of both mega charizard and venusaur, even greninja. However, what I don't see is a synergy between starters. I may be overlooking it, but my experience makes it look like they can hardly coexist on a comp team. So, my idea was that I wanted to find a combo of starters that would come together to be competitive. I understand that this team would never make it to the championships or win tons of huge prizes, but I want to see starter pokemon work together to put some beat downs on their enemies.

So, my question. Given a list of every starter from gen one to six, any ideas on how a team like this would be set up? Preferably, I would like to see all six team members being starters, but realistically that may not work.

My personal ideas that have crossed my mind... Take this with a grain of salt, I am very much a noob.

I like the idea of a support greninja, protean. However, an offensive greninja may fit well too depending on what other Pokemon make the team. I feel good with venusaur's bulk to use him in an offense position, but I am not familiar with m-charizard or blastoise enough to write off their metas yet, so not sure which one would fit best. As for walls or just defensive Pokemon in general, I'm stumped. I really don't use many starters, so I'm blind to what their roles look like. This is why I could use opinions of veterans though.

Anyways, that is where I am. This is meant to be a side project, not a main team. It is meant to be able to actually do some damage, but shouldn't be taken too seriously. Thank you guys for your time and thank you for your opinions.

So, umm, I have sort of made a team like this!
I used the core of m-Charizard Y and Venusaur. Venusaur with chlorophyll and growth is OP!
Then, because of other stuff, I put in Greninja as a counter.
Then I built my team around that.
Feels good to use your two x/y starters and your red/blue starter :D

That could be a base really. I was thinking Charizard could use up the Mega Slot here so that he could wreck enemies. I personally think that would be the best choice here in terms of Starter based Megas. Venusaur certainly seems like the logical choice to build on Mega-Char's sun, so that would make it in as the second pokemon. Greninja is a very nice special attacker from what i have seen when mixed with Protean, but I am not too experienced with him yet. I foresee Delphox being a nice special attacker as well, but again, not positive how well she works out.

Defensively, I like the idea of a nice rapid spin Blastoise, or Utility Tank Chesnaught.

Not sure how this should play out though. Im a bit stumped.

Well, after some discussion and a bit of testing in Showdown, I think I found a team. Now, note that I am not a veteran competitor in any way and am just now getting into the whole scene, so take it all with a grain of salt, so to speak.

I will first post the entire team and then go into detail on how they will play out a bit. They are still in a testing stage, so opinions are welcome here so they can be refined.

Mega-Charizard Y - This choice is to start the team off. I put much thought into Who would get the coveted 'Mega Slot' for this team, and after a while it dawned on me that this was the way to go. M-Zard Y opens up with his ability Drought, which brings Sun into the battle. From here, two options open up for me... If I feel comfortable, I can keep Zard in and smash through the opponent's team with a combination of Solar Beam and Flame Thrower (a combo that is resisted by few). If I believe Charizard is at risk staying in currently, I can use the new weather change to bring in Venusaur and get him ready. The last two moves on Zard are to give him more coverage and broaden his killing spree.

Blastoise - I went with the typical Spin-Stoise set here, pretty cookie-cutter. With M-Zard Y being one of the focal points of this team, his fear of stealth rock needed to be dealt with. Sticking to the theme of the team, I couldn't think of a pokemon i would be more comfortable with to deal with hazards. Bring in this bad boy to knock those pesky hazards away while also tanking a few hits. Scald and Toxic are there to add salt to the wound, Supporting the rest of the team by leaving his foes in a bad state. Roar makes sure that 1. He can't be set up on very easily, and 2. He can poison/burn, switch enemies, and repeat process.

Venusaur - Meant mainly to take advantage over the sun. His ability of Chlorophyll mixed with his speedy EV spread will allow him to become the flash among his peers, which in turn gives him chances to move forward with either Growth or a Sleep Powder if he feels threatened. After a Growth or two, he is ready for combat, utilizing his STABs in Sludge Bomb and Giga Drain (which the later also helps keep him alive to dish out even more pain). His Black Sludge item works as a passive heal, which ends up giving him a much longer life than one would expect. He may not be a wall, but he sure as hell can hang in there for a long time.

Greninja - Man, this little guy fooled me big time. I picked up a Froakie when the game first came out and I ended up dropping Frogadier by the fourth badge because I thought he was just so dang weak. BOY was I wrong. This set utilizes his sheer special attacking ability mixed with his range of STABs coming from his Protean ability. His Tri-Attack combo of Hydro Pump/Ice Beam/Dark Pulse is devastating to many pokemon and can easily turn the tides of battle if the opponent isn't prepared. His speed can give him some very great opportunities to get in that finishing blow, while his Special Attack mixed with the Life Orb item ensures the blow will be massive. But if he is feeling a little.... froggy... lol.... he has U-Turn to fall back on, giving him a nice chance to run away and live to fight another day.

Chesnaught - This one eludes me. I have never, before recently, had any ambition towards using, or even trying, Chespin or his evolutions. He just reminded me way too much of a brown Oshawatt who wore a suit of leaf armor, but I lately realized they serve completely different purposes. This Chesnaught build is probably exactly like every other one you see, but he does his job well enough. His defense is sky high, allowing him to survive some rather nasty hits. If he feels threatened enough, he can predict his opponent's next move and throw up a Spiky Shield to not only protect himself, but deal a bit of extra damage as well. He also has the ability to drop a couple sets of spikes to deal some switch in damage to his enemies. From here, he has two options, each varying hugely from the other. On one hand, he can go all out and drop a Wood Hammer on the other pokemon's face, making for some nasty bruises. On the other hand, he can be a weasel of a squirrel and Roar out the enemy, dealing spike damage to the switch in. With some prediction and good timing, some major damage can be done with a combo of Spikes, Roar, and Spiky Shield. Dwindle their defenses my Squirrel Knight!

Infernape - Blaziken semi-clone, minus a few differences... One, he chose fur over feathers. Some say it was a fashion statement, I say nonsense. Two, he isn't banned to UBERs, which is good for me, lol. He has speed, he has hitting power. The key to this pokemon is his ability which boosts the power of punch typed moves. Flare Blitz and Close Combat are his main damage points, dealing large amounts of STAB power. Mach Punch is his 'go-to' for dealing in priorities. Thunder Punch is for that pesky Azumarill, who loves to reign on my parade. If you would have told me way back in October of 2000 that I would one day have nightmares of Azumarills laughing hysterically as they crush my competitive dreams, I would have laughed even harder than they. But, this is the world we live in now, no turning back.

Checks that I have encountered so far?
Trick question really... I have tested this team only a few times, so it is in very early development still. However, I have noticed that Azumarill ran away with one match, but that also was partially due to some bad calls on my part. I have also noticed that if M-Zard is outran, I am going to have a bad time... Other than that, I will report back here as I find weaknesses. So far, I have had pretty good luck with the team.

P.S. Consider this my Bump. I mainly wanted to say that I finally have a team to be rated, so it deserved its own post. No more bumps left.
