Moves
=========
Mega Tyranitar can leverage its great bulk to provide the team with entry hazard support. Crunch is the main STAB move, dealing reliable neutral damage to most targets such as Landorus-T, Rotom-W, and Serperior. Superpower threatens Steel- and Fighting-types that come in expecting Stone Edge such as Ferrothorn, Heatran, Excadrill, and Keldeo. Stone Edge can be used instead for better neutral coverage against Fairy-types such as Clefable and to hit common metagame threats like Volcarona and Thundurus. Pursuit allows Mega Tyranitar to trap bulky Ghost- and Psychic-types such as Cofagrigus, Cresselia, and Mega Latias. Alternatively, Taunt can be used to ensure Stealth Rock is not removed by Skarmory's Defog and to provide the team with stallbreaking ability.
Set Details
========
36 Speed EVs allow Mega Tyranitar to outspeed non-invested Mega Scizor, Skarmory, and Seismitoad. 104 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature provide enough power to guarantee 2HKOs on Slowbro with Crunch and Ferrothorn with Superpower, as well as enough all-around power to make Mega Tyranitar a threat to many metagame threats like Thundurus, Rotom-W, and Zapdos. The investment in HP and Special Defense allows it to survive Focus Blast from Mega Alakazam, Thundurus, and Mega Charizard Y from full HP and in sand. It also gives Mega Tyranitar useful all-round bulk, allowing it to absorb special attacks from Pokemon like Zapdos, Heatran, and Volcarona.
Usage Tips
========
With its comfortable bulk, Mega Tyranitar can use Stealth Rock against a variety of different targets. It also takes on opposing Excadrill, threatening and OHKOing it with Superpower. It is best used early- and mid-game, where it can set up Stealth Rock and open up defensive cores. As Mega Tyranitar provides sand for its usual partner, Excadrill, it can be important to time those sand turns correctly and keep Mega Tyranitar around as long as possible or needed. Thanks to its bulk, Mega Tyranitar can be used as a check to Mega Alakazam, Thundurus, and Mega Charizard Y.
Team Options
========
The best partner for bulky support Mega Tyranitar is Sand Rush Excadrill, which benefits from the sand it provides and makes up for Mega Tyranitar's lack of Speed. In addition, Mega Tyranitar can check threats to Excadrill such as Mega Alakazam, Thundurus, and Mega Charizard Y, while Excadrill can deal with Clefable, which can be annoying to Mega Tyranitar. As it is very weak against Fighting-types like Keldeo, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Medicham, good Fighting-resistant Pokemon like Clefable, Slowbro, and Reuniclus are good partners. Mega Tyranitar appreciates strong Ground-immune allies like Zapdos, Skarmory, and Tornadus-T, all of which can switch into Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Excadrill — key threats to Mega Tyranitar.
