Streaming my ladder runs

I've started up an online stream that consists of my ladder runs. When it's online, I basically use a team on the ladder and people watch the stream. The benefits of this over simply spectating a game on PO is that you can see my moves, items, party, and the decisions I make during the course of the battle (as simple as mousing over possible choices, but sometimes I actually explain what I'm thinking out loud through my mic).

The intent behind this started out as 'hey come watch Thorns ladder' but I feel like this method of broadcasting Pokemon battles to the Smogon community has the potential to be something much bigger. I'm not exactly a laddering god, and I'm sure that there are players out there that ladder better than me. This could be used to educate less experienced players on competitive Pokemon, people looking to improve their laddering technique, or just a way to kill time.

The stream's offline right now, but if anybody is interested in doing something like this, talk to me on IRC and I can help you get a stream up. own3d.tv is an example of the streaming model done correctly. There are streams up basically 24/7, and I can't play Pokemon 24/7. I'd like to replicate the own3d.tv model but with competitive Pokemon. Perhaps this could even be a feature of Smogon - the opportunity to watch top players playing Pokemon.

I'd like to have a thread somewhere where I can update my stream status and allow for discussion of my stream in particular, and I envision that if other users have streams, they'd have a thread for themselves too. I don't know where I would post it where it would be easily accessible by random passerbies on Smogon though.

Thoughts?

I don't know about this live battle stream. For example you could face newer players and 6-0 them without any strategy at all. What's the point for watching 20 minutes then.
I think it's better to record good battles and explain your thoughtprocess on them instead of streaming every battle.

obviously as my rating increases i play better players instead of silently autopiloting like i was earlier today. i won't bother streaming if i'm in the process of getting an alt up to the point where you stop getting bad players on the ladder

as for recording good battles, there really is no telling if your next battle is going to be a good one or not without recording each and every battle you play and i find that my commentary is much more natural and honest when i'm commenting on my own moves live rather than after. i believe that's better left to stuff like battle of the week. i'm not above recording my tournament games though, like a few other players.

This could help people understand the thought process of battling as some new people really struggle with the idea of prediction. One problem for the person doing the streaming would be that his opponents, even when it's not the 'main' team, can get more than just an insight into the playstyle of the person. Pretty much my only ace up my sleeve is a strange playstyle, I'd hate for people to get a good grip on that. Just something to consider for the person doing the streaming.

I think it's a good idea overall, helping people see what good battlers do. I'm sure the ones streaming don't mind showing some of their playstyle if they're doing this, and overall if there's more good battlers out there the better things are for the game.

I think it's a very good idea for reasons already stated. I've seen these done in the past over wifi and they're very entertaining.

My concerns are whether or not you're opponent will like to be broadcasted, especially if he's trying to test a team and keep it secret or something. I also think that if the person you are laddering against realize that the ladderer is streaming himself, they'll just hop on there and out-predict him the whole battle. Of course I guess you could solve that by releasing the streams after the ladder run is over. =/

@SC there's a difference between ladder teams and tournament teams, and i've honestly never cared about people using my teams because if it's used enough there will be people copying it whether you like it or not

@morm i don't really care if people know how i play pokemon, i've actually talked about it multiple times to various people, and i can even tell you here if you really want to know how i play pokemon - i bully the opponent and make them play a reactive game rather than a proactive one

@smith that is one of my concerns too and i will probably just change my nick to show that i am streaming and if people protest then i can switch the stream to black screen for the duration of the battle. the stream is on a slight delay, i believe it's about 30 seconds or so. they won't know my moves until i do them.

I would agree this could be interesting. I've seen it for sc2 and stuff as well. There is some risk in doing this, but if you use different nicks, it will be difficult to catch on.
