Torkoal is a viable sun setter in UnderUsed, and despite stiff competition from Ninetales, is able to differentiate itself enough to be a valuable alternative. Thanks to its high defense and Body Press, Torkoal can help alleviate problems for sun teams like Lokix, Tyranitar and Heatran. Access to Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock is extremely valuable, being able setup entry hazards and remove them for teammates like Venusaur and Lilligant-Hisui. Will-O-Wisp can be used instead of Rapid Spin, being able to consistently burn switch-ins like Rotom-Wash and Latios, and aids Torkoal in checking physical threats like Gyarados and Azumarill. Clear Smog can be used to ensure Torkoal isn't used as setup fodder for threats like the aforementioned Latios and Sinistcha. Tera Flying can be used to grant an immunity to Ground-type attacks from Excadrill and Donphan, while Tera Grass grants a resist to the aforementioned types, while also granting a resistance to Water-type attacks from the likes of Greninja and Keldeo. It should be noted, however, Tera should almost always be saved for a teammate unless it is an emergency.

Torkoal should only be considered on sun teams. Chlorophyll Pokemon like Venusaur and Hisuian Lilligant take advantage of Torkoal sun to outpace alot of the metagame and appreciate Torkoal's ability to setup Stealth Rock to chip away at the enemy. These two Pokemon can also threaten out Slowking, another huge obstacle for Sun teams. Slither Wing is another great partner for Torkoal, as Protosynthesis empowers Slither Wing greatly. In return, Slither Wing can threaten out Latios, Sinistcha, and Hydreigon who Torkoal often lets in for free. Other good partners include the likes of Weather Ball Latios and offensive Heatran, both appreciate the boost they can get from Sun, and Heatran appreciates the ability to use Solar Beam to snipe bulky Water-types like Gastrodon, Rotom-Wash, and Slowking. Even on sets with Rapid Spin, another form of hazard removal like Excadrill or Donphan should be considered, as Torkoal is quite inconsitent at removing hazards due to it being forced to run Heat Rock.

Clear Smog can be used to ensure Torkoal isn't used as setup fodder for threats like the aforementioned Latios and Sinistcha Hydreigon Hydreigon can run Substitute. Tera Flying can be used to grant an immunity to Ground-type attacks from Excadrill and Donphan, while Tera Grass grants a resist to the aforementioned types, while also granting a resistance to Water-type attacks from the likes of Greninja and Keldeo. Chlorophyll Pokemon like Venusaur and Hisuian Lilligant take advantage of Torkoal sun to outpace alot of the metagame and appreciate Torkoal's ability to setup Stealth Rock to chip away at the enemy try to also include how these Grass-type Pokemon can help Torkoal out in return for example they help against Slowking which can be an obstacle. Slither Wing is another great partner for Torkoal, as Protosynthesis empowers Slither Wing greatly. In return, Slither Wing can threaten out Latios, Tyranitar, and Hydreigon who Torkoal often lets in for free. I would mention how Torkoal pairs well with offensive Fire-types such as Heatran & Hisuian Arcanine enjoy the Fire move boost. Other good partners include the likes of Weather Ball Latios and offensive Heatran, both appreciate the boost they can get from Sun. include how Heatran also pairs well as it can run Solar Beam to snipe bulky Waters Even on sets with Rapid Spin, another form of hazard removal like Excadrill or Donphan should be considered, as Torkoal is quite inconsitent at removing hazards due to it being forced to run a Heat Rock.

Will-O-Wisp can be used instead of Rapid Spin, being able to consistently burn switch-ins like Rotom-Wash and Latios, has a much higher chance to burn than Lava Plume, and aids Torkoal in checking physical threats like Gyarados and Azumarill. Clear Smog can be used to ensure Torkoal isn't used as setup fodder for threats like the aforementioned Latios and Sinistcha. In return, Slither Wing can threaten out Latios, Sinistcha Tyranitar, and Hydreigon who Torkoal often lets in for free. Unlike Ninetales, Ttar does not want to switch into Torkoal as it takes major damage from Body Press, replacing it with Sinistcha here. Other good partners include the likes of Weather Ball Latios and offensive Heatran, both appreciate the boost they can get from Sun, and Heatran appreciates the ability to use Solar Beam to snipe bulky Water-types like Gastrodon, Rotom-Wash and Slowking.
