Sunny Day Team # ???

I have been an observer of the Pokemon metagame for a while and recently decided to get more involved. During the fourth generation I experimented with some team building and took a stronger interest in the fifth generation. I have built a couple of fifth gen teams and this has been my most successful. I used Rise and Shine: A Guide to Sun in BW OU (http://www.smogon.com/bw/articles/ou_sun) by Benlisted, sirndpt, and zdrup15 as a guide to help build this team. I would appreciate any suggestions that are made.

NOTE:The team has been altered based on suggestions. Conkeldurr and Volcarona originally replaced Charizard and Latias. Conkeldurr was then replaced by Infernape. The sets for Charizard, Latias, and Conkeldurr are hidden at the bottom.

Ninetales

Smogon Set – Specially Defensive
Leftovers
Drought
Timid (+Speed, -Attack)
252 HP / 92 SpA / 164 Spe
• Flamethrower
• Toxic
• Substitute
• Protect

I like the defensive capabilities that this set offers, especially the ability to switch into a Politoed and taking a hydro pump extremely well. This set has been walled by Heatran a couple of times but the rest of my team can usually take care of it.

Venusaur

Smogon Set – Special Growth
Life Orb
Chlorophyll
Modest (+Special Attack, -Attack)
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
• Growth
• Energy Ball
• Hidden Power Fire
• Sleep Powder

I find that this Venusaur is the most useful Pokemon on this team as it can set up while the other Pokemon is asleep and it can take care of Politoed and Tyranitar very well. I experimented with Solarbeam but I found that Energy Ball is much more reliable and effective.

Snorlax

Smogon Set – Offensive
Leftovers
Thick Fat
Adamant (+Attack, - Special Attack)
80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 SpD
• Body Slam
• Earthquake
• Fire Punch
• Pursuit

Snorlax is meant to give physical potential to the team and absorb fire attacks with thick fat. It takes advantage of Sunny Day with fire punch and it counters Latios and Latias fairly well.

Donphan

Leftovers
Sturdy
Impish (+Defense, - Attack)
252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
• Stealth Rock
• Rapid Spin
• Earthquake
• Ice Shard

This Donphan is a combination of a defensive set and offensive set with its primary purpose of getting rid of entry hazards and setting up stealth rocks of its own. It also deals decent damage with Earthquake. Ice shard is useful as a priority move, hurting ghost types, and scaring of Dragonite, Salemence, and Gliscor.

Volcarona

Smogon Set - Bulky Quiver Dance
Leftovers
Flame Body
Bold (+Defense,-Attack)
240 HP / 216 Def / 52 Spe
• Quiver Dance
• Fiery Dance
• Bug Buzz
• Morning Sun

Based on a suggestion, I replaced Latias with Volcarona. Volcarona is a great counter against fighting and a much better counter against Reunicles. With a Quiver dance under its belt in the sun, Fiery Dance is amazing. Morning sun has unbelievable recovery. It is definitely far supperior to Latias in this team.

Infernape

Smogon Set - Choice Band
Iron Fist
Adamant
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
• Flare Blitz
• Close Combat
• Mach Punch
• U-turn

Infernape is awesome because it is a fast sweeper that can hit hard and fast without set up. In the sun, almost nothing can take a Flare Blitz nicely (except for Flash Fire). It adds a Pokmon to my teams that can come and destroy Heatran easily but can still take down a scarf Tyranitar easily (roles of both Darmanitan and Conkeldurr). Thank you for this suggestion.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments made.

Latias
380Latias.png

Leftovers
Levitate
Timid (+Speed, -Attack)
252 HP/ 4 Def/ 252 Spe
• Dragon Pulse
• Wish
• Roar
• Energy Ball

Latias’s primary purposes are to counter fighting types and provide wish support. I have rarely ever have been able to achieve the latter, but it does counter fighting Pokemon well. I added Energy Ball so that Latias is also able to fight off Tyranitar and Politoed decently. Latias deals as much damage to a bulky Politoed with an Energy Ball as the Politoed is able to deal with its Ice beam. Tyranitars usually attempt to set up stealth rocks, boost stats, or puruit right away so Latias can generally 2HKO.

Charizard

Smogon Set – Solar Power
Choice Scarf
Solar Power
Timid (+Speed, -Attack)
252 SpA / 4 SpD/ 252 Spe
• Fire Blast
• Air Slash
• Hidden Power Ice
• Focus Blast

Charizard is one of my favorite Pokemon and its fun to watch people underestimate it. However, it can be difficult to get set up and is usually very short-lived. I understand that it’s a glass cannon and therefore, I would not be opposed to replacing it.

Conkeldurr

Smogon Set - Bulk Up
Leftovers
Guts
Adamant (+Attack, - Special Attack)
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD
• Bulk Up
• Drain Punch
• Mach Punch
• Stone Edge

As per suggestion I removed Charizard and added Conkeldurr in order to counter Chansey/Blissey, scarfed Tyranitar and Heatran. I chose a slightly more defensive set so that Conkeldurr could take a fire attack. Since I am using Stone Edge over payback, I maxed out its speed IVs. So far it has worked very well.

one of the biggest issues is how dangerous a well played chansey/blissey can be, scarf ttar being a huge threat, heatran being able to wall ninetales + venusaur + latias, and other such "general team problems". as you stated, charizard is a glass cannon and is the weakest link. so my first change is to change charizard to (and this might seem odd but it fits on this team) a strong defensive fighting-type such as conkeldurr. a set of bulk up, stone edge, drain punch, and mach punch gives you a solid answer to ttar, scarf terrakion, and other such threats that put you at risk.

with this change, id like to address your second weakest link in latias - if its not good wish support and meant to counter fighting-types, i feel like a better change would be a defensive quiver dance volcarona with morning sun. with this, you have a much better answer to reuniclus (who gives this team trouble but latias apparantly fills the role of phazing it), a good counter to fighting-types still, but abuses your sun much more efficiently. luckily, losing latias doesn't really hurt much with other threats such as rotom-w (youve got very solid counters like snorlax and venusaur) so its certainly an affordable change.

this team is certainly on the right track but hopefully my changes help you cover a few things.

From experience, a choice band works much better on snorlax, making it truly a force to be reconed with. With band attached and an Adamant nature it will be able to take a draconian meteor from katies and ohko as it switches out. Also choice band return or body slam is absolutely disgusting and really hurts anythin that doesnt resist.

I've noticed that you don't have a Pokemon on your team with the Flash Fire ability. It might not be an issue so long as Snorlax is alive (thanks to Thick Fat), but a Fire immunity will help keep you from being annihilated by other sun teams, and let you hit back hard. Heatran and Chandelure are good options.

Also, Dark Nikuman's advice on Scarf Darmanitan is rock solid. Darmy's Flare Blitz reaches 351 Base Power after STAB, sun, and Sheer Force are factored in: positively nuclear. Also, a Scarfed Darmanitan will outspeed nonScarfed variants of Latios and Latias, hitting them with a super effective U-Turn. Your choice of Superpower, EQ, Rock Slide, and Fire Punch round off the moveset. All of this is backed by a Base 140 Attack stat. I don't think I need elaborate beyond that. ;) Have fun.

I was experimenting with this scarfed Darmanitan set:

Choice Scarf
Sheer Force
Adamant
252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
~ Flare Blitz
~ U-turn
~ Rock Slide
~ Earthquake

The problem is that without Snorlax (I personally like the leftovers because it increases snorlax's lifespan but I will try the choice band), this team is very susceptible to special attacks. The team is especially weak to rain dance teams. With that being said, my team is very threatened by Heatran without Darmanitan. I have also noticed that no matter what I do, I am also weak to sun teams but I don't know what to substitute out for a flash fire user. I am not sure exactly what to do. If you could offer a little more guidance I would appreciate it. Thank you.

i think this guy will solve you problem: CB Infernape with mach/close combat/flare blitz/u-turn so you can keep the big fat sleepy another monkey on your team. he's a combination of darma and conkeldurr you know...
