The Next Best Thing is a project where the users can submit & search for various creative but viable Pokemon sets, utilising the power of various underlooked & unexpected moves/items, or a combination of both in a set.

Here, you'll find many sets that might seem vague, but in reality carves out a niche in this metagame. These sets are excellent at acting as a surprise factor, which can totally change the the match.

You may also find how potent a Pokemon can be by looking, playing & even creating some out-of-the-box sets, that are definitely unworthy at first sight.

The sets here posted should obviously be viable, avoiding jokes such as Choice Band Blissey that can't be taken serious. Posting meme sets will also drive the host crazy.

Before submitting any set, you must read the Procedures, Rules & Regulations of the forum.

  • Every cycle (14 days), a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new, creative yet effective sets.
  • All the existing sets (or WIPs) on the Smogdex are disallowed.
  • The participants will get 7 days to submit their sets in this forum.
  • Voting will be held in the next week.
  • All the winning sets will be kept in the Hall of Fame (see next reply).

  • Be as creative as possible, but your creativity must also show some viability.
  • You may only post 1 set per cycle.
  • You are not allowed to take sets from Smogdex & WIPs.
  • Making some minor changes in the existing sets of Smogdex won't work.
  • Set explanation is a must.
  • Be detailed with your sets & replies as much as you can. You may (please) include Replies, teammates options, threats, usage tips, & even a team built around the set.
  • You are free to discuss others' sets in the Submission time, but can't discuss set after the voting begins.
  • You are allowed to suggest potential changes in others' sets, if it doesn't bother him/her.
  • You are allowed to reserve your set in this forum (not suggested though), but the reservation won't last more than 24 hours. If so, your reservation will be denied & others will get the chance to copy your set (so don't lose the opportunity).
  • Please name your sets based on the moves & items, & not random funny names.
  • You aren't allowed to copy anyone else's set, not even the reserved ones.
  • It is illegal to post illegal sets. If found doing such illegal stuff, you'll be declared illegal from this very Legal forum.
  • You are allowed to change your set before the Voting begins (though this may create confusions & isn't recommended).
  • You can't vote for your own set.
  • Creating new accounts to vote, manipulating others to vote your sets & other such tricks are strictly forbidden. If found, you'll be banned from posting here.
  • Try to avoid double-posting.
  • If you have any queries regarding this post, prefer asking me personally through Conversations or Profile Posts. Avoid asking questions on this forum.
  • Adhere the Forum Rules & be polite with other members here.
  • At last, the most important rule. Just Have Fun :quagchamppogsire:

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Tera Blast
- Ice Beam
- Encore

Common Magearna checks like Roar Dialga, Arceus-Fire, Chi-Yu, Glowking, CM Clefable, and opposing Magearna all are either weak to ground or can’t deal with encore. Idea is to after hazard chip take a kill on a common check and snowball or help clear for Magearna later. Encore beyond helping vs clefable also is just a generally good utility move in this metagame and helps vs cosmic arceus and opposing gearna. Ice beam is just the best coverage move to pair with ground to get kills on Landorus-T, Rillaboom, and other ground resists. Timid is also needed for scarf Chi Yu who still outspeeds +2 modest. You want to use one of the many dragons tk help the grass/Water weakness that will come from teraing. And to have Pokémon who are not as reliant on Tera is this set

Flaws
• Tera Reliant
• Initially Weak
• Tera Ground removed resists from extreme speed and Weak to Jet Punch And Grassy Glide
• Needs Hazard Support

Magearna @ Choice Specs
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fleur Cannon
- Ice Beam
- Volt Switch
- Focus Blast/Trick

Magearna with specs is actually terrifying, the Ubers UU world doesn't quite know it yet. Fleur cannon hits like a truck, OHKOing Palafin, chi-yu, arc-dark, defensive houndstone and alomomola, and doing more than 50% to zam-C. Ice beam hits the tera grounds (25% chance to OHKO tera ground zac), and of course melts landorus and blursa. Focus blast is entirely for securing an OHKO on defensive dialga, though note than spdef dialga can always live unless at +1. It also helps against threats like opposing magearna and arc-fire, but it's usually better volting out on those. Trick is okay, but really lacks when you consider all the plates and non-trickable orbs items running around the tier. Ubers UU needs a special pivot, and specs magearna is a great choice for doing so. EVs outrun uninvested dialga and moltes, as well as any funny bears trying to speed-creep uninvested mag

Flaws
  • Arceus-fire
  • Opposing magearna
  • Being choice-locked
  • Soul-Heart doesn't play nice with Fleur cannon

Magearna @ Life Orb
Ability: Soul Heart
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Ice / Ground
Jolly Nature
- Shift Gear
- Play Rough
- Iron Head
- Ice Spinner / Tera Blast

this set is slightly inconsistent, but shift gear shenanigans are funny. this set actually hits pokemon like arceus-fire, arceus-dragon, zacian, and rillaboom for se damage while setting up.

McGriddler (Magearna) @ Muscle Band
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water / Fighting
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shift Gear
- Play Rough
- Iron Head
- Encore / Brick Break

shift gear magearna goes CRAZY

anyways you all prob have a few questions so ill answer them

Q: why are you using MUSCLE BAND of all items???
A: the answer is simple: i would only have a 50-ish percent chance to ohko Chi-Yu with Play Rough after one Shift Gear without it, but i kill Chi-Yu every time with MB without losing HP with Life Orb or being choicelocked with Band

Q: why specifically 84 speed?
A: this allows me to outspeed Palkia-Origin after just one Shift Gear and oneshot with Play Rough, and using the EVs i save i can invest into bulk

Q: how long did you spend in calcs?
A: like 30 minutes idk

Q: what does Encore do for this set?
A: allow Magearna to counter stuff like CM Arceus

Q: what are the issues with this set?
A:
-Dialga(meanie with roar >:( )(brick break lets you 2hko sometimes but if ur fighting a team with dialga try to set up 2 so you can tera fighting and ohko)
-Some Setup Sweepers(if you don't run Encore)
-Chip Damage(no healing off with lefties)
-there's definitely more but idk

Q: why dont u have Fleur Cannon? that would synergize with phys magearna so well probably
A: in all my calcs i didnt find a situation where Fleur would be better than Play Rough, so i slotted it out

Q: do you even know what you're doing?
A: nope lmao

Eerie Impulse Magearna

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 32 HP / 252 SpA / 224 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Eerie Impulse
- Volt Switch
- Aura Sphere
- Dazzling Gleam

Here we have another defensive attempt with Magearna, but with the use of Eerie Impulse in order to check Calm Mind users while damagind them in return and/or Volt Switching out, to keep the momentum.
Aura Sphere and Dazzling Gleam is the combination of attacking moves chosen for coverage.
Tera Water allows Magearna to switch to another good defensive typing.

With this EVs spread you reach 222 Spe points, enough to outspeed neutral 252 Spe EVs Tyranitar that sometimes runs special coverage moves.
Max SpA EVs + Modest nature to gain some offensive presence. The leftovers are put on HP to add some generic bulk and odd health points.

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Spikes
- Thunder Wave
- Pain Split

This set is very odd but it does work. It spreads paralysis to opposing mons and then sets spikes while staying healthy with Leftovers, Pain Split, and Draining Kiss. The power of this set comes from its longevity as it can continuously heal up throughout the game as needed thanks to Pain Split, allowing for it to switch into attacks more often as well as healing off most of the damage taken.

Gravity Magearna

:sv/Magearna:

Magearna @ Leftovers / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Fleur Cannon
- Spikes / Encore
- Gravity
- Volt Switch

With a similar concept to Trick Room Magearna and using the standard defensive Mag spread (albeit with 0IV speed as I think this is more optimal for pivoting), Magearna can set up Gravity and pivot out safely into one of the 3 powerful Ground-type wallbreakers in the tier that are Landorus-I, Ursaluna and Ursaluna-BM; the previously immune to Ground and hard to hit Corviknight is now weak to their attacks, and the panic checks that are Air Balloon Gholdengo / Dialga can no longer force them out with the safety net that the balloon would normally provide.

The lack of other strong Ground types in UUbers limits the viability of this set but wallbreakers that rely on Earthquake or EP for coverage can also benefit from this, although the short number of Gravity turns means that mons like SD Arc-Poison that get walled by Corv would not benefit from it as much as picks with more immediate breaking power. Of course, some of these mons (Landorus-I and Arceus) could slot Gravity into their own movesets as a way of self-support, but often it's better to save moveslots for coverage and let a bulkier mon set it up before slow pivoting out to get a free switch into your threats, and even if Gravity doesn't last particularly long the damage will often already be done by the time that it's over as the only real switch-ins to Lando-I's EP with Gravity up are Blissey, Arceus-Grass/Bug (The former gets Sludge Bombed, the latter is a generally bad Arc form) and Sp.Def Giratina.

Tera Water is chosen as a good defensive typing that flips the Fire weakness and gives a resistance to Water, as Tera Flying is very redundant on a set that aims to remove Ground immunities. Lefties or Boots can be run depending on how weak the team is to hazards, but Eject Pack is a fun option that lets you pivot with a stronger attack and avoid Volt Switch blocking by Electric immunes, I just prefer the value of a defensive item on a spread like this. Fleur is still selected though as a strong STAB option to deal massive damage to targets that aim to exploit its passivity, while Spikes and Encore are both solid choices depending on whether a team needs hazard support from Mag for your breakers or Encore as a countermeasure to boost sweepers like Clef, Espathra or opposing Magearna, with Encore also giving it free turns to set up Gravity.

Scarf

Magearna @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Poision / Water / Ground
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Trick / Tera Blast / Shadow Ball / Ice Beam / Focus Blast / Energy Ball
- Trick / Tera Blast / Shadow Ball / Ice Beam / Focus Blast / Energy Ball (really it can be anything)

Somehow nobody uses this. Gen 8 OU at one point has this set as the most popular set, yet people forget it. It doesn't utilies boost, but rather the high power of fleur cannon to force a mass amount of switches. Not A UUbers main so I couldn't really show calculations but still, it should still be solid.

First, does Imprison work if you switch out? If it does, presenting
Imprison :Magearna:

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: What you want! (aka IDK what to do for this)
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Imprison
- Stored Power
- Calm Mind
- Fleur Cannon/Draining Kiss/Basically any move you want that does damage

You'd think this sucks but surprisingly a lot of mons use stored power calm mind. Special :Arceus:, random :Manaphy: (don't ask, I am low ladder and I see this), cutting off :Blissey: and :Clefable:'s way to keep up with your calm minders, and finally smacking Non Lumina Crash :Espathra: as a wonderful counter, literally using non lumina crash:Espathra: as setup fodder.
So. Stored Power has been imprisoned. Calm mind is locked. Now, we resort to dazzling gleam.
252 SpA Tera Fairy Espathra Dazzling Gleam vs. 252 HP / 4+ SpD Magearna: 45-53 (12.3 - 14.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Or not! This is tera fairy :espathra: as well. Several other moves suck as well, like shadow ball:
252 SpA Tera Ghost Espathra Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4+ SpD Magearna: 90-106 (24.7 - 29.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery.
Never forget you can run draining kiss to completely screw the birb over.

I think I have a crazy idea who might just work: Expert belt Magearna.

Magearna-Original @ Expert Belt
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Fairy / Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def /140 SpA / 20 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Focus Blast
- Flash Cannon / Tera Blast / Support (Spikes / Encore / Thunder Wave)

Just think about it, a massive virtue of Magearna is her massive movepool, which includes stuff like Bolt Beam, "Focus" Blast, Psychic, Fleur Cannon and Shadow Ball, alongside great typing and stats outside speed. This set, who is a similar approach to Gen 7 specially defensive Assault Vest Magearna (when she was the queen of OU... Can a robot be considered She? Whatever), is trying to replicate this element of almost perfect coverage of this pokémon to seriously dent the enemy. Similarly to that AV set, she's played as a role compressor of tank and pivot with surprising damage.
Due to this now being an envoriment with lots of Box legendaries, Magearna oftentimes might end shy of getting a KO, and with 65 speed trying to get 2HKO is unadvisable if possible... That's where expert belt enters. Due to expert belt, a lot of 2HKO become OHKO with a bit of hazard support.

140+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Palafin: 315-372 (92.3 - 109%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

140+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 152 HP / 0 SpD Espathra: 325-384 (88 - 104%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
140+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon over 2 turns vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Spectrier: 387-457 (113.4 - 134%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns after Leftovers recovery

140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chi-Yu: 271-322 (107.9 - 128.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Zamazenta-Crowned: 240-283 (61.8 - 72.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (You can KO after with fleur cannon)
140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Ursaluna-Bloodmoon: 449-528 (104.4 - 122.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 346-410 (87.8 - 104%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Ninetales-Alola with an ally's Aurora Veil: 319-377 (91.4 - 108%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes
140+ SpA Expert Belt Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 245-290 (60.6 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

The set details are the following:
  • 252 | 96 | 0 In bulk allows Magearna to survive a Wave crash from Banded Palafin.
  • 140 in special attack with modest nature makes her able to achieve many OHKO, most notably against physically defensive Giratina after rocks and against normal Dark/Dragon Arceus.
  • 20 Speed is to outspeed uninvested Corviknight, which I feel is more worth than 20 in special attack/defense.
  • Fleur Cannon is our neutral move of choice, being just a very powerful nuke who can oneshot stuff you wouldn't expect with a tiny bit of chip, even when hitting neutral.
  • Volt Switch is an emergency button to escape bad positions and position better our allies without losing momentum. Is not a very damaging move but it's not trying to be one.
  • Focus Blast is, for the dismay of everyone, the reason this set works, getting you many KOs on otherwise counters to this Robogirl, most notably Chi-Yu, earth power Dialga, Both Ursalunas (specially bloodmoon) and Zamazenta-Crowned.
  • The last moveslot is mostly team-dependant. You might find usage of tera blast ground because ground + fairy is amazing coverage combo, while STAB flash cannon is useful against fairies, which is important considering the 2 most used mons are fairy types; Ice beam in theory sounds great but in practice everything is covered by Fleur cannon anyways. Finally, if none sound appealing, you can still incorporate a support move like spikes, encore or thunder wave.
  • Tera is mostly Fairy to power up those fleur cannons, with ground in case of tera blast.

The pros of this set are the following:
  1. Is an incredible switch punisher. Between the nuke of Fleur cannon and almost perfect coverage, there's not a lot who wants to switch into, and the few options who do are easy to cover with teammates and pivoting.
  2. Is the tier's only reliable fairy type special attacker... Yes, I know Iron Valiant exists, but is a mix attacker, is weaker on the special side, lacks pivoting and is very frail. Magearna's niche is indeed unique in the tier.
  3. It still conservates a bit of said utility that makes Magearna a top 2 pokémon alongside Zacian. You still have those pivoting capabilities, the bulk to endure some very strong hits and a bit of support, even if neutered compared to a defensive magearna.
  4. It is a much better Tera user. Regular magearna can only use tera defensively, which alongside her regularly amazing defensive typing makes tera a suboptimal choice quite often. While this version can use tera on both roles, both to power up moves and to avoid the weaknesses steel has.
Her problem here are threefold though:
  1. Is somewhat reliant on chip damage to get KOs. Unlike Specs a lot of the damage is 90% or so against a lot of pokémon. That means you'll need a consistent rock setter, and preferably not the most consistent one in Palkia due to also being a special attacking steel type tank.
  2. Quite unreliable moves. Between focus blast and fleur cannon offensive Magearna will not be something you can rely in a pinch, but more of a pokémon who punishes switches with unexpected KOs but drains momentum if missing.
  3. 4MSS. You want Fleur Cannon for nuke/primary STAB, Volt Switch for momentum, Focus Blast for general coverage, Flash cannon for opposing Fairies as well as more reliable damage, Tera Blast ground for Arceus-Poison/Fire and Gholdengo, thunder wave so you can actually outspeed stuff and spikes because that move is amazing. I'm counting 7 moves you want and only 4 you can fit.
Here's an example of the team I'm talking about. In terms of replays though... I've been critted all week, so I only have this one. The set is definitely more powerful but boy does my mon not like to hit lately. My week can be resumed on the turn 14 of my game 2 aka playing well just for RNGesus to show me the middle finger.

All in all, a high-risk, high-reward strategy with more flexibility than regular choice items but more support-demanding. Might need more practice to get right than the one I was able to, and specially not getting the luck shown your middle finger around your butt, yet when she works she's just amazing and oftentimes I feel my mistake was not being agressive enough.

It does seem like people are quite interested in posting new sets!! I'll increase the deadline by one day to see if more sets come!!

Screens Mag
1701983158272.png

Magearna @ Light Clay
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Flying/Water
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Steel Beam
- Encore/Thunder Wave/Fleur Cannon

Why would you want to use Mag as a screens setter over Dragapult, who can set screens in front of nearly ever offensive mon in the tier? Well, the same reason you want to use Mag on any team: it checks damn near everything, especially Zacian, setup (if Encore), and dragons (if Fleur Cannon). Steel Beam is cute because it operates a lot like Curse Dragapult but also because it OHKOs Zacian with no investment.
Using this on a screens team that can't fit Volcarona or multiple other Zacian check sounds honestly very appealing and I might build it and see how high I can get. Pokemon that benefit from screens but offer little defensive utility can fill this team out, along with Fire checks like Sash SD Garchomp and Palafin/Palkia-Origin.

Thanks a lot for all these tremendous sets for our first week!! Also apologies for the delay!!

Hereby, I announce the commencement of voting. You guys probably know the drill! We will be voting in Ranked Pairs. Basically, you'll be ranking the sets in descending order of their viability, creativity & relevance to the metagame (you need to vote for a minimum of 2 candidates & a maximum of 5). An example could be A > B > C > D > E > F or F > E > D > C > B > A.

You may use the alphabets written in front of the sets to vote.

B: the only reason i choose this is because i thought of this before but got sniped
F: this is simple and i like it
J: i have posted a set similar to this not once, but twice in a row for various nbts sooo ya.
H: simple yet effective
A: the single reason i didn’t vote for this is because it has ZERO stab options
C: can’t vote for my own :sob:
D: i mean ZERO offense when i say this, but this seems a bit too smiliar to mine and i have a little grudge against it since it was posted directly after mine was
E: i’ll be honest, stuff like these dont really work too often, since the opponent can just switch out on yo ass
G: kinda funny that the gravity set was labelled as G but what does this do. like the one i mentioned above, they either switch or set up
I: i think this is just worse than double dance sets, which arent used as often as utility

Ofc, how can I forget those epic sets!! Also thanks a lot for such detailed descriptions, I'd love other voters to follow such notion likewise (if they have time, can make their efforts, and wish to contribute to the Hall of Fame. Yes the Hall of Fame will have these descriptions from other players about how others think about the set)!!!

As much as I want to say J is the best, I have to be objective here, and I choose this set because someone else took the one I wanted already.

Magearna sets:

B > K > F > H

B: I agree with Kinesquare here. How is not Specs Magearna more Popular? She (?) has BoltBeam, 2 Nuke STABs who don't really punish the specs user, "Focus" Blast, trick and Volt Switch; the only issue is that pitiful 65 speed and even then you have tools to play around it with teammates.
K: Simple yet effective. Access to steel beam gives a lot of value to Magearna as an HO Lead.
F: In a game with Giratina and Arceus, Pain Split becomes an appealing way of recovery.
H: Scarf sounds good, but I can't avoid being concerned with the inability to outspeed anything faster than Cyclizar, most notably Zacian, Dragapult, Spectrier and both Zamazentas.

A: The lack of STAB really hurts the reliability of the set.
C/D: I don't trust Physical Magearnas in a world where both Zamazenta and Iron Valiant exist. This should be about balancing practicality and creativity, not being quirky/gimmicky to the point it'll only work against low ladder.
E: The problem here is Magearna's speed. Eerie Impulse is just special Charm, and honestly you're almost always better off using screens.
G: The set is fine and practical, but very unremarkable. Gravity does indeed have uses with stuff like Landorus-I and Ursaluna, but it's very bland being just a normal Magearna but with Gravity as your second support option. Next time try to put more sauce and salt.
I: Slow calm mind users? In this economy? Yeah, the tour data showcases that slow setup sweepers are just terrible, very likely because the meta is filled with fast wallbreakers enabled by Magearna.
J: That's my set. I don't think I can vote for my set, can I?

Pokémon Nominees:

:Arceus: > :Dialga: > :Gholdengo: > :Palkia: > :Dondozo:

The reason for the choices is because they're the most interesting to built around.

D > B > H > K > F
#1, D: I really like the idea of Phys Mag now that it's got Play Rough, and Shift Gear + Encore is a cool combo.
#2, B: Genuinely a pretty good and underexplored Magearna set that I think has a lot of potential.
#3, H: Scarf is similar to Specs, the tier is less open to Scarf Trick as lower ones due to all the signature items but I still like it.
#4, K: Magearna is a pretty cool bulkier screens option though I'd sooner use a diff screen setter to have a setup or support Mag on HO.
#5, F: Feels like a very standard bulky pivot set but with Pain Split over Volt Switch, I like it though.
Next week: :Arceus: > :Dialga: > :Landorus: > :Palafin: > :Gholdengo:
