Swellow Discussion

Amid everyone thinking about how cool Staraptor and friends are, Swellow was forgotten. Swellow does have some good uses and might actually see some more use in D/P if used well.

Swellow @ Burn Orb
-Brave Bird
-Return
-Pursuit
-Somersault

Burn Orb activates Guts giving Swellow some boosted Attack power while still being versatile. Also, it makes it so that Swellow does not have to worry about other status effects since Burn means that it won't have to sacrifice its incredible Speed to get a lot of Attack. This is best used with a Wisher of some kind since Sandstream + Burn Orb will wear it down quickly. However, this can be a great lategame sweeper with the powerful STAB Brave Bird and Return. Pursuit doesn't let Gengar and friends escape easily and Somersault lets it do damage while switching out.

If you're running Burn Orb, why not Facade > Return (well, one turn isn't gonna make much of a difference, right)

The only real problem with swellow is that Burn Orb + frail defenses & HP + Brave Bird recoil can hurt it real badly.

Swellow gets Counter, if anyone cares. If you have insane amounts of Defense you'll survive a Metagross' non CB'ed Meteor Mash and Counter it back for an OHKO

I thought about this set as well, and wouldn't be more advantageous to give him poison orb, so that the flame orb does not cut down his attack - then give him facade over return?

It also gets Double-Edge and Baton pass from previous gen.

Swellow @ Burn Orb/Leftovers
Facade
Brave Bird
Somersault/Quick Attack
Quick Attack/Pursuit

OR

Swellow @ liechi berry
Substitute
Endeavor
Return
Baton Pass/Aerial Ace/Beak Peck

The top one dies very quickly with brace bird/burn orb, so you have the options of leftovers. There's no point of life orb, since burn orb does more anyway. The second swellow is more for fun, but if used correctly, it can really cause havok, but no brave bird for him if you decided to use it. Overall, he's just a fast bird with a decent enough attack, and decent stabs.

Stealth Rock weak + Sandstorm + Burn Orb would make for a quick death sentence, so I'd probably use that with some weather support to help it last a little longer. Optionally, just try to get Toxicked or Burned on your own time. I guess there's also Feather Rest, but with Swellow's defenses that doesn't seem like a great idea.

The main problem with Swellow is that it's completely dicked by Skarmory. At least Mukkuhawk can phase it with In Fight.

The CB Swellow with three attacks and sleep talk is great for status-absorbing. Past that, stealth rock weak and super lame defenses mean he'll be dead fast.

its not like it really has to worry about sandstorm damage or skarmory though dodrio had it held off at about BL last gen, and then Staraptor came in and sent both the fuckers down to BL/UU.

Well, it's always satisfying to know that CB Swellow can come in on Lugia Toxic any time and proceed to rape it with Facade.

He'll be dead fast, but the whole point of swellow this gen seems to be making your opponents dead fast as well. He seems to be able to do that well enough. He'd definately be broken in UU (except against Aggron), for example. Swellow should do fine; not great, but fine.

I've recently heard that sleep activates guts. CBswellow + guts activation could harm skarmory with facade (assuming that facade also activates on sleep. And assuming that sleep talk picks facade. And assuming that your opponent switches to skarmory. Hmm...)
