To build a NU team I decided to start a team with Ninjask to support a Swellow
[pimg]277[/pimg] [pimg]291[/pimg]
I noticed that Ninjask and Swellow have many of the same weaknesses, so If I were to boost Ninjask, and attempt to baton pass those boosts to Swellow, 9/10 times, I would be sending Swellow to the wolves. So I added Golurk to the team, as an alternative to baton pass to, especially if my opponent is using electric, normal, or fighting moves against my Ninjask.
[pimg]277[/pimg] [pimg]291[/pimg] [pimg]653[/pimg]
Now my team is looking good. Except Ice is still a major concern for all 3, but I cannot add another physical attacker to the mix. So who better to add that could one, use these boosts, and two, still be a good pokemon for switching between other than Miltank with Thick Fat! And Miltank with 2x or sometimes even 3x attack and 2x-3x speed is now a tank to be reckoned with, especially when given not only body slam, but Iron Head as well. With the speed boost, Miltank can now both paralyze and flinch targets.
[pimg]277[/pimg] [pimg]291[/pimg] [pimg]653[/pimg] [pimg]241[/pimg]
My last two I was completely unsure of what to add, I know I needed a special attacker, and at least one more defender so I threw in Gardevoir and Walrein just to Glue together the team, more Ice resistance and another tank along with a Special Attacker. The Gardevoir is Choice Specs just in case I only get some speed boosts to Ninjask, and I want to pass it off to Gardevoir it would still be like a Choice Scarf, only much more powerful.
[pimg]277[/pimg] [pimg]291[/pimg] [pimg]653[/pimg] [pimg]241[/pimg] [pimg]282[/pimg] [pimg]365[/pimg]
And now for their builds:
[pimg]277[/pimg]
Swellow @Toxic Orb
Ability: Guts
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
-Facade
-Brave Bird
-U-turn
-Quick attack
The purpose of this particular pokemon is to receive speed and attack boosts from Ninjask, and if necessary and or possible, a sub, and provide very high damage. This pokemon is the first choice to switch to if possible, particularly if the other player is attempting to set up on my Ninjask. It keeps U-turn, in order to stop toxic damage from racking up too quickly while still doing plenty of damage. The quick attack is used in case other priority moves are used against the Swellow, in order to prevent her from taking unnecessary damage, also a useful revenge killer when going against a faster opponent.
[pimg]291[/pimg]
Ninjask @Leftovers
Ability: Speed Boost
Nature: Impish
EVs: 248 Hp / 224 Def / 36 Spe
-Baton Pass
-Substitute
-Swords Dance
-X-Scissor
Ninjask's Job is pass speed boosts to any pokemon on my team, and when possible give attack boosts along with its speed boosts to either Swellow, Golurk, or Miltank. The X-Scissor is necessary to thwart would-be-taunters to think twice. A 2x damage X-Scissor still hits fairly hard.
[pimg]653[/pimg]
Golurk @Leftovers
Ability: Iron fist
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 172 Hp / 84 Spe
-Substitute
-Focus Punch
-Earthquake
-Shadow Punch
When Ninjask is being attacked by a rock, poison, electric, or normal move, and thus cannot safely baton pass it's Swords Dance onto Swellow, Golurk comes into play. Especially useful when an electric or normal move is being used, if the other player is not careful, he may have an extremely fast, extremely strong Golurk free switch in. He can Substitute in order to set up a focus punch on weaker foes, or could even possibly be passed a sub, which is even more devastating. The substitute also protects him from priorities moves like sucker punch, which I often see being used against him after being passed on speed boosts.
[pimg]241[/pimg]
Miltank @Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 Hp / 252 SpD / 4 Atk
-Heal Bell
-Milk Drink
-Body Slam
-Iron Head
If I cannot safely switch my speed boosts and Sword's Dance to either Swellow or Golurk (usually because of an ice move), it's going to go to Miltank with her thick fat. This miltank can easily sweep a team if the opponent is not careful when given 3x attack and 3x speed. The Iron Head can easily flinch opponents, while racking up heavy damage, or a good Body Slam can paralyze them, giving me free turns to heal up or remove status ailments. Many will think the Heal Bell has bad synergy with the Toxic Orb on the Swellow, but because most of the time the swellow is coming in from a baton pass, the Toxic Orb will usually get that turn to activate regardless. Also since Miltank comes in as a last resort, usually it's because either Swellow is not viable yet, or she already died killing off several pokemon before succumbing to the toxic orb or protect stalling. The
[pimg]282[/pimg]
Gardevoir @Choice Specs
Ability: Trace
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
-Psychic
-Signal Beam
-Focus Blast
-Trick
Gardevoir is just here to receive speed boosts from Ninjask if he was unable to set up any Swords Dances, and also to be the special attacker on the team. He can do some pretty heavy damage with the Choice Specs, and trick an opponent (preferably a physical attacking one or support poke), into locking him into a single move crippling it. This pokemon does not have the same synergy as the core: Ninjask, Swellow, Golurk, Miltank, but provides a means to fill in the whole of special attacker, and does a decent job at it as well.
[pimg]365[/pimg]
Walrein @Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
Nature: Calm
EVs: 252 Hp / 253 SpD / 4 SpA
-Encore
-Protect
-Brine
-Super Fang
Walrein is here to be another defender, particularly against ice moves. His job is to switch in, absorb an attack, protect, and encore if possible making another switch possible, to one of my other pokes. If it comes down to the wire, he can still do some damage with Brine, a Special attack, giving 2 Pokemon who have special attacks, gluing the team together as best as possible. The Protect then Encore work well together, along with the Super Fang then Brine. A decent wall, that requires little thought to use properly.
In Summary:
Before this team NU simply was not my thing. After testing it in Pokemon Showdown, I went from 1100-1200 range, to mid 1400's without even breaking a sweat. The Core of this team just works so well together with all the ways Ninjask can provide support, it is difficult for opponents to stay on their toes, and one simple mistake could be devastating for opponents. As for the flaws...
I don't have a Specific Special Defender and Physical Defender, Instead I have 2 mixes. They are both weak to fighting, but that's where Ninjask comes into play with 4x Resist, and most EV's in HP and Def. He can switch in, setup a bit, and then baton pass out. I like the core of my team, Swellow, Ninjask, Golurk, and Miltank. What I really need is advice on whether Gardevoir and Walrein are my best choices to patch up the glaring holes: Weak to Ice, Dark and Stealth Rocks Moves, Needs Walls, No entry Hazard moves, No Rapid Spinner, and lack of Special Attackers.
