[Overview]

Talonflame's role in NU focuses on being a Defogger, pivot, and defensive check to Fighting-type threats like Mienshao and Sirfetch'd. Additionally, using Flame Body, it can fish for a burn by switching into these threats, including common U-turn users like Flygon. Its Speed tier is also its best friend, allowing it to naturally outspeed most of the tier and revenge kill fast threats like Salazzle and Inteleon. Sadly, since Water-types like Gastrodon and Blastoise are common, it can be tough for Talonflame to do its job. Also, while it wants to check the aforementioned Fighting-types, Talonflame cannot do this reliably, since they can remove its Heavy-Duty Boots with Knock Off, thus making it more susceptible to Stealth Rock. Additionally, it's not a strong attacker and as a result can struggle to revenge kill at times.

Roost gives Talonflame much needed reliable recovery and is best used as Talonflame forces Fighting- and Steel-types out. Will-O-Wisp cripples Pokemon like Tyrantrum and Diancie, both of which resist Brave Bird. Defog lets Talonflame remove entry hazards from the field as well as opposing screens. U-turn can be used as an alternative move to Will-O-Wisp or Defog to provide Talonflame's team with momentum. Similarly, Toxic can be used over Will-O-Wisp to put common switch-ins like Gastrodon on a timer. Flame Body is the preferred ability because Talonflame is good at fishing for burns by switching into moves like Mienshao's U-turn and Copperajah's Heavy Slam. The EV spread with a Jolly nature maximizes Talonflame's bulk while being able to outspeed Inteleon and Salazzle.

Teammates like Copperajah and Guzzlord, which Fighting-types feast on, can retreat into Talonflame and serve as Flame Body lures. Water-types that run amuck like Gastrodon, Blastoise, and Mantine all switch into Talonflame with little-to-no issue, save for Toxic. Therefore, teammates like Vileplume, Dragalge, and Rotom-C are appreciated to take pressure off of Talonflame. These Pokemon as well as Gastrodon also check Electric-types like Heliolisk and Choice Scarf Rotom-C. Similarly, Rock-types like Aerodactyl and Diancie either outspeed Talonflame or don't mind coming in on any of its moves. Gastrodon as well as Mudsdale can eat up any hit they throw at them. These same two partners can also switch in on Choice Scarf users like Tyrantrum and Mienshao, since Head Smash and Stone Edge, respectively, take out Talonflame with ease.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====

Swords Dance can work on a viable setup set for sweeping. However, this requires a turn of setup, and given Talonflame's less-than-decent Attack stat, it is still not hitting as hard as it would like. Flamethrower can be used over Brave Bird to better check Steel-types like Copperajah and Escavalier. Unfortunately, while Flamethrower does hit them hard, it removes Talonflame's best way to damage the Fighting-types it's supposed to be checking. Taunt is also a viable option to shut down foes like defensive Arcanine, Sylveon, and Comfey. It is generally not encouraged, however, due to the fact that it's not always effective and Talonflame can get severely hurt as a result.

Checks and Counters
====

**Water-types**: Gastrodon, Blastoise, and Mantine force out Talonflame with Water-type attacks and then recover health or set up. They are all U-turn bait and dislike getting Toxic poisoned, however.

**Rock-types**: Threats like Tyrantrum, Aerodactyl, and Diancie easily switch into Talonflame and force it out. They all fear Will-O-Wisp, though.

**Choice Scarf Users**: Mienshao, Rotom-C, and Heliolisk are just a couple of Choice Scarf users that outspeed Talonflame and OHKO it.

**Knock Off**: Common Knock Off users like Drapion, Escavalier, Sirfetch'd, and Mienshao commonly draw in Talonflame and can remove its Heavy-Duty Boots and make its role tougher. They all need to be careful of a Flame Body burn, however.

[Overview]

Talonflame's role in the NU metagame focuses on being a defogger and a defensive check to Fighting- and Grass-type threats like Mienshao, Sirfetch'd, and Roserade. Additionally, using Flame Body, it can fish for a burn by switching into these threats, including common U-turn users like Flygon. Its Speed tier is also its best friend, allowing it outspeed most of the tier naturally and do what it wants. However, Talonflame does face similar competition from Mantine, which has similar type disadvantages, absorbs Water, better bulk, and thus, takes hits better than Talonflame. (I don't like this line, Mantine really isn't a competition for Talonflame since they offer different things to a team. One punishes uturn users while offering a fast defog and the other one is more of a defensive wall. Charizard is probably a better comparison but I would just cut this line entirely). Since Water-type Pokemon like Gastrodon and Blastoise are common, this can make it tough for Talonflame to do its job. While it wants to check the aforementioned Fighting-types, Talonflame cannot do this reliably, since some of them can remove its Heavy-Duty Boots with Knock Off, thus making it more susceptible to Stealth Rock.

Roost gives Talonflame much needed reliable recovery and is best used on the Fighting- and Grass-types it checks. Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers like Tyrantrum and Gigalith, both of which resist Brave Bird. Defog lets Talonflame remove hazards from the field as well as opposing screens. Flame Body is the preferred ability over Gale Wings since Gale Wings is contingent on Talonflame being at full HP. The EV spread of 248 HP / 52 Def / 208 Spe with a Jolly Nature maximizes Talonflame's bulk while being able to outspeed Inteleon.

Teammates like Copperajah and Exploud, which Fighting-types feast on, can retreat into Talonflame and serve as Flame Body lure. Water-types that run amuck like Gastrodon, Blastoise, and Mantine all switch into Talonflame with little-to-no issue. Therefore, teammates like Vileplume, Celebi (I think that Roserade is a better grass type to mention here but it's your call), and Rotom-C are appreciated to take pressure off of Talonflame. Swords Dance can work as a viable set for setup sweeping. However, this requires a turn of setup and given Talonflame's less than decent Attack stat, it is still not hitting as hard as it would like. Mention Toxic and Flamethrower over Wisp+Brave Bird here and its downsides (Mostly just getting destroyed by Dragalge). U-turn also deserves a mention here.

**Water-types**: Gastrodon, Blastoise, and Mantine force out Talonflame with Scald and can use it for spinning or recovery.

**Choice Scarf users**: Mienshao, Tyrantrum, and Heliolisk are just a couple of Choice Scarf users that outspeed Talonflame and OHKO it.

**Electric- and Rock-types**: Threats like Rotom-C, Aerodactyl, and Diancie offensively pressure Talonflame and force it out.

**Knock Off**: Common Knock Off users like Drapion, Escavalier, Golisopod, and the aforementioned Mienshao can remove Talonflame's Heavy-Duty Boots and make its role tougher. They all need to be careful of a Flame Body burn, however.

However, threats like Dragalge have no fear switching into it. U-turn can be thrown into the moveset also (Rephrase this by saying how U-turn can be an option over a support move and can gain momentum). But, by doing this, it's sacrificing one of its already valuable assets.

Talonflame's role in the NU metagame focuses on being a defogger, pivot, and a defensive check to Fighting- and Grass-type threats like Mienshao, Sirfetch'd, and Roserade.(just Fighting-types really, Grass-types are uncommon outside of Rotom-C, which is an unfavorable matchup) Additionally, using Flame Body, it can fish for a burn by switching into these threats, including common U-turn users like Flygon. Its Speed tier is also its best friend, allowing it to outspeed most of the tier naturally and do what it wants.(give some examples here of relevant fast Pokemon that Talonflame can revenge kill as a result) Since Water-type Pokemon like Gastrodon and Blastoise are common, this can make it tough for Talonflame to do its job. While it wants to check the aforementioned Fighting-types, Talonflame cannot do this reliably, since some of them they (all of Mienshao, Sirfetch'd, and Machamp run Knock Off 100% of the time except maybe on some Swords Dance Sirfetch'd sets) can remove its Heavy-Duty Boots with Knock Off, thus making it more susceptible to Stealth Rock.

Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers Pokemon like Tyrantrum and Gigalith Diancie, both of which resist Brave Bird. Defog lets Talonflame remove hazards from the field as well as opposing screens. (talk about U-turn as an option over either Will-O-Wisp or Defog and Toxic as an alternative status move. some teams can afford a different Defogger than Talonflame, so it's not unreasonable to see STAB move + Roost + status + U-turn, and Toxic is good enough to warrant mention here as opposed to OO) Flame Body is the preferred ability over Gale Wings since Gale Wings is contingent on Talonflame being at full HP.(it's not really this; it's more that Talonflame is good at fishing for burns when switching into moves like Mienshao's Close Combat/U-turn and Copperajah's Heavy Slam) The EV spread of 248 HP / 52 Def / 208 Spe with a Jolly Nature maximizes Talonflame's bulk while being able to outspeed Inteleon and Salazzle.(yea you don't need this much Speed for Salazzle, but it's another relevant Pokemon that Talonflame can revenge kill, so might as well mention it here)

Teammates like Copperajah and Exploud Guzzlord, which Fighting-types feast on, can retreat into Talonflame and serve as Flame Body lure. Water-types that run amuck like Gastrodon, Blastoise, and Mantine all switch into Talonflame with little-to-no issue.(barring Toxic) Therefore, teammates like Vileplume, Roserade Dragalge, and Rotom-C are appreciated to take pressure off of Talonflame. Swords Dance can work as on a viable setup set for sweeping.

====
