TalonKazam

Introduction

Hello, this is my first RMT, I've had some success with this team winning most of my matches but occasionally losing due to my own lack of skill. The team is centered around Talonflame's priority Brave Bird and the sheer force of Alakazam. With Goodra, Mega-Venusaur and Skarmory tanking hits and Rotom-Wash to keep momentum as an offensive pivot.

A Look at the Team

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
  • Flare Blitz
  • U-Turn
  • Steel Wing
  • Brave Bird
Talonflame is easily one of my favorite things out of 6th Gen, with blistering speed and somewhat decent Attack plus priority Flying type moves, its become one of the most used Pokemon since the start of 6th Gen. Unfortunately it has a dreaded 4x weakness to Stealth Rock but that is somewhat manageable thanks to Defog.

While its movepool is not the best, what it's given is more than enough. Flare Blitz and Brave Bird have decent coverage and U-Turn is just plain awesome. Not sure about Steel Wing at the moment. 164 Spe EVs is so Talonflame can outspeed base 100 Pokemon .

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
  • Defog
  • Whirwind
  • Stealth Rock
  • Brave Bird
Skarmory is my Stealth Rock setter, my Defogger when necessary and my Physical Wall. With the buff to Defog I can see Rapid Spin getting less use while Defog users like Skarmory getting the inverse effect.

The Rocky Helmet is to counter the Mega-Kangaskhan rampaging through my team as well as other Physical Attackers. I'm contemplating getting rid of Stealth Rocks for Roost though and adding them to other team member not sure though.

Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Timid Nature
  • Hydro Pump
  • Volt Switch
  • Trick
  • Hidden Power [Ice]
Rotom-Wash is another common Pokemon seen at the moment running a few different sets. I like to run mine Scarfed as 105 SpA hits relatively hard but 86 Speed is pretty dismal so give it a boost in the Speed department.

Rotom works well with Talonflame forming a nice VoltTurn core. Rotom also works well at taking other Talonflames down and Dragon types like Garchomp and Dragonite.

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Gooey
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
  • Draco Meteor
  • Dragon Tail
  • Fire Blast
  • Sludge Bomb
Another one of my favorite Pokemon from 6th Gen, such a cute slimy dragon :3 It's also a great Special Wall and can hit hard too. Goodra also works as a phazer and a pretty decent one at that. Sludge Bomb is mainly to surprise Fairy switch-ins like Azumarill and Fire Blast for Steel types. Even without Max SpD EVs Goodra still hits 500+ which is ridiculous. Again such a cute dragon :)

venusaur_by_clairc_artstuff-d5hh0k0.png

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll / Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Calm Nature
  • Synthesis
  • Giga Drain
  • Sludge Bomb
  • Hidden Power [Ice]
Venusaur sure made a big 180 this Gen, going from one of most successful Sun sweepers to a great mixed tank all with the loss of infinite weather and the addition of a Mega evolution. I still need to figure out how I'm going to properly distribute EVs on this one but these seem to do the job at the moment , I'm really open to suggestions with Venusaur. But mainly it's job is to try and spread poison with Sludge Bomb and tank hits from various Pokemon.

Alakazam @ Focus Sash
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
  • Psyshock
  • Focus Blast
  • Shadow Ball
  • Hidden Power [Ice]
Alakazam is one of the best revenge killers and leads imo. The ability to switch in without hazard damage is the best thing a revenge killer could ask for. The timid nature is to out speed Modest Alakazam and other Pokemon. I'm currently unsure if Psyshock or Psychic is better for my team and if I should replace Hidden Power with Dazzling Gleam.

Conclusion
I'm really open to any suggestions, and thank you for any comments constructive or otherwise. I will continue to toy around with EVs and movesets but I look forward to your opinions and criticisms. Thank you :)

This is a pretty cool team man
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the idea of this team is to sweep with banded talonflame, a gigantic threat imo. You tank hits with skarmory while setting rocks and defogging away other hazards if necessary. Goodra and venusaur if needed are there to take any special hits and they hit back hard, basically offensive pivots. Alakazam is your revenge killer, with a sash and his great speed. Rotom-w seems to be a revenge killer as well. Your team is well thought out, you don't have any glaring weaknesses and you have a clear role for everybody.

But there are still a couple things I don't like about the team. You have two revenge killers, more or less, and you really don't need that. Rotom-w is pretty cool as a scarfed mon, but alakazam is far superior in almost every aspect as a revenge killer. You oughta change your rotom to a bulky spread of 252hp/244def/12spe, with 12 just to speed creep. If you want a slower volt switch though, you should go 252hp/252def/4spa. Either way, it seems to me like your rotom was taking a lot of hits switching in, it'll still give you momentum and stuff but I think you've got the revenge killer part down.

Just some more minor things to nitpick from here, nothing big: the talonflame spread is pretty standard, and unless you really value the bulk that 92 hp evs give you (not a lot), you should invest even more in speed. I prefer a spread of 44hp/252att/212spe just to make sure your brave bird outspeeds mega pinsir's quick attack. This spread will also ensure that you outspeed other talonflames that speed creep the 164 benchmark, which could potentially be bad if your rotom-w is weakened (it gets worn down easily) and your alakazam's sash is broken. Your rotom-w just offers way too many resistances for your team and not enough bulk to support it, and I can imagine it gets worn down super fast. There's a lot of tension on this guy, so play him carefully.
Your goodra set is a little out of the ordinary, but I notice that it gets completely checked by a heatran with a sub, I can imagine this guy giving your other pokemon trouble as well. You don't have anything clean cut to take him on except for rotom-w's hydro pumps, and trust me, those run out fast. What I'd recommend to make heatran easier is replacing dragon tail-->earthquake. It's a little weird, but goodra lures in heatran pretty nicely imo. you should also run a mild nature on goodra because it's not gonna be taking the physical hits anyway, and your speed is more important than your defense. Thus, to compliment this goodra makeover, a spread of 24att/252spa/232spe. This spread allows you to outpace any heatran and 2HKO (obviously) with earthquake. However, if you predict their switch in, you should still draco meteor to pop a possible balloon and make them feel safer about staying in before surpising them with eq.
Moving on, I question why you have invested fully in defense yet have a calm nature. Moreover, you have 3 attacks but no offensive investment. You need to decide which path to go with this venusaur: offensive or defensive. I can't really help you with this venusaur because until then, I don't know whether you want an offensive one or a defensive one.
Last but not least, we have alakazam. All of its moves are cool, but I think you should change to dazzling gleam. The only other thing dazzling gleam doesn't hit is gliscor, and skarmory completely shuts him down. Dazzling gleam is also just more reliable overall. You should watch out for weakness policy dnite tho, it can put severe dents in this team.
So, to sum up:
Scarf Rotom-->Bulky Rotom
44hp/252att/212spe on talonflame
Dtail-->Earthquake, 24att/252spa/232spe

Maytag (Rotom-Wash) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 12 Spd / 252 HP / 244 Def
Bold Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Gooey
EVs: 232 Spd / 252 SAtk / 24 Atk
Hasty Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
Sorry for ridiculously long rate, good luck with your team!

Thanks for the rate man, quite appreciated and yes that is the general idea behind the team.

Okay I'll try out those changes you've mention especially the eq on Goodra as Heatran sure has been a bit of trouble. I'd like to run Venusaur in a defensive role on the team, I was trying to run it as a mixed tank but I kind of screwed that up I think.

Hey, I really like this team - could you include an importable of it for testing?

I'd like to run Venusaur in a defensive role on the team, I was trying to run it as a mixed tank but I kind of screwed that up I think.

As for Venusaur, how about running something like this? It's a bit stallish, but I think that's what you were looking for.

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll (Thick Fat)
EV's: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
- Synthesis
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Toxic / Substitute

Synthesis is for recovery to keep on tankin' through, Giga Drain is a nice semi-recovering STAB, and Leech Seed can force switches and further boost Venusaur's longevity. Toxic or Substitute each have their merits for stalling.

Generally speaking, with Thick Fat softening Fire and Ice moves, you're going to be concerned mainly with Psychic and Flying attacks - many of which are Special. However, with Talonflame blazing (hehe) about in OU and Goodra serving as your main Special wall, I'd recommend a Physically defensive set. This can tank a hit from even Choice Band Talonflame (assuming close to max HP) if need be and Toxic it before switching.

That's the best defensive set I can think of, without getting redundant with Goodra's role too much.

I'm kinda new to this so I'm not sure how to make an importable sorry but thanks for the advice I'll try that out too. Looks like what I was trying to accomplish with Venusaur.

Well... Hmmm...
*goes to Showdown!*

Here: Copy what's in my hide tag and take out the spaces from between the word 'hide' and the brackets, ok? Just put it in the OP and it should work. I included both my changes and Srn9130's.
Also, I wasn't sure what to put for your Rotom-W, as you could either opt for a Chesto-Rest variant or just a bulky one with Pain Split. I'm going to use the former for the time being, with Srn9130's speedier EV's. You can always change this later if you want. Another thing: you may want to consider Will 'o Wisp or Thunder Wave on Rotom-W, if you're finding really Physically-powerful or speedy 'mons an issue, respectively.

Anyway...

Ive tried the bulky one with pain split and WoW and that seems to be working a lot better for the team and the stallish Venusaur is also working wonders at the moment

Thank you guys much appreciated :)

No problem! Remember to change the importable, since you're running Pain Split + WoW on Rotom-W and not Chesto-Rest.
