Tangrowth is a Bro(New semi-gimic set)

So, in my search to find amusement in the blob of vines that is Tangrowth, I thought of a new set. A specific role that only Tangrowth can fill. Its a variant of a standard subseed set that uses the pseudo-shuffle effect of subseeding to stun as many of the opponents pokemon as possible. Here it is:

TangBROwth @ Wide lense
Timid 252 spd 252 def 4 spdef
Chlorophyll
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
- Stun Spore
- Block

As you can see he has max speed. This is to get the subseeding process started. Here is how the usualy turn sequence goes. Switch in on something you resist or take little from. Then use stun spore. After stun spore you leech seed. Then sub stall them to death. The wide lense is important here because if you miss with a leech seed or stun spore it can disrupt your pattern. If you predict them switching use leech seed. Then sub up... etc. With this strat, not only will you probably do fair amounts of damage to their team, but you will scout a lot of their moves and stuff. Also, if a pokemon you really want dead switches in, you can use block to trap them. 1 block usualy assures critical damage from leech seed. After a while, you will have a few of their pokemon paralized and a few of their pokemon wounded to some extent. Also works well with rocks and spikes. Not toxic spikes though.

Even without block, the para+subseed strategy is devastating. Other notable pokemon you can do it with are Celebi (has access to twave, more balanced defences) and Jumpluff (faster, lower defenses, lower max hp for more leech recover %)

Discuss/Critique

You have no attacking moves, so Taunt/Encore screws you over. Those are just the first things I noticed.

Edit: You are failing to take advantage of Tangrowth's best stats - its Hp, At, Sa, and De, and you're not making use of its great movepool. Because you have crappy speed, those 252 Sp EVs won't really help you (unless you're in sunlight with Chlorophyll), and you have no way of making anything switch out. What if Infernape switches in while you Block/Leech Seed and Encores you or hits you with a STAB Flamethrower, or what if Starmie switches in after it figures out your strategy (it has Natural Cure and Rapid Spin, so no Parahax or Leech Seed for you!) and Ice Beams you to death?

Like you said, it could work, but it won't 99% of the time. Just as Pinsir is a bad copy of Heracross, this is a bad copy of a SubSeeding Jumpluff or Sceptile, but in a worse way.

This set is CAN be preposterously annoying, but in the end will accomplish next to nothing. It is altogether the easiest setup bait ever for Pokemon with Substitute or Taunt, and even if you do Leech Seed something, it doesn't kill quickly enough. Not to mention with this set you squander Tangrowth's good Attack and Special Attack.

Interesting set...but I'm unsure of why you wouldn't use celebi instead...

Like you said it has more equal defences...it has good speed...and it can learn all of those moves...

Edit: Yeah and taunt would screw it up as well...

Replace Stun Spore with an attack, Substitute with Sleep Powder and focus on a defensive spread and then we're talking.

First of all, the reason i used tangrowth is because it can learn block. thats like the whole point of this set. If i replace stun spore with something else, then this set pretty much becomes a leechseed + substiture set. aka standard boring.

The EV spread could use more work, I just put max speed and defence cause it was the first thing i could think of. I guess if im relying on switch-ins I doint need the speed. Any ideas for a spread?

Guess what? Your set IS a subseed set.

Only thing unique is you added Block and if you're gonna do that then you may as well put them to sleep. Stun Spore is a waste of a moveslot if trapping/Leech Seed is all you had in mind.

Least you can do is make it more effective and try pull a Venusaur.

you will get screwed by taunt and encore. so if i were you, i'd replace stun spore with some type of attacking move.

Smogon Analysis says:

Name: SubSeeder
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA
Held Item: Leftovers

~ Substitute
~ Stun Spore
~ Leech Seed
~ Sludge Bomb

Yours is essentially that with a crappier EV spread, and Block in place of Sludge Bomb, meaning you can't touch Grass-types. Why can't you just make Roserade or Sceptile do this?

How amazingly innovative.

Seriously, as one who went down this road too many times, post EVERYTHING in "creative movesets" first. Only if it's actually a major option (Substitute Empoleon!!!) then you should make a thread.

Guys, stuff is Standard because it's good. Block is actually relatively common, but why bother Blocking? If they switch you could just Seed again, or use the switch in to set up, or let them take residual damage, or stall, or... you get it.
