SS OU Tangrowth+Tapu Koko Bulky Offense

Hello everyone! Today I have a team I built around tangrowth and I would like to have it rated in order for it to reach it’s full potential.Full paste is linked here.

Building Process
:ss/tangrowth:
:poke ball:
This is the mon I wanted to build around. This mon can function as a way around kartana, rillaboom,Tapu bulu and urshifu rapid strike as they get stone walled by it only getting hit super effectively with u-turn.And with rocky helmet it can punish urshifu’s surging strikes or any physical attacks thrown at it.It’s able to break dragonite’s multiscale in a pinch as well.
:ss/tangrowth: :ss/Tapu koko:
:poke ball: :poke ball:
The 2nd Pokémon I wanted to include is Tapu koko. It’s a great offensive and defensive partner with tangrowth as it functions as a slow win con which defeat things that threaten out tangrowth such as tornadus-therian,dragonite,corvikinght and cm Tapu fini.

:ss/Tangrowth: :ss/Tapu koko: :ss/Landorus-Therian:
:poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball:
The 3rd mon I decided to choose was Landorus-Therian this is due to it being able to check Zeraora while functioning as a volt blocker and being able to help me handle non utility dragonite with it’s intimidate ability. This mon can also spread status a lot alongside tangrowth.

:ss/Tangrowth: :ss/Tapu koko: :ss/Landorus-Therian: :ss/Urshifu-rapid strike:
:poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball:
The 4th mon I decided to choose was urshifu-r this is due to my team being quite weavile weak and having an offensive way past it can be very helpful. This team also lacks breaking power which urshifu can provide while also benefiting from tangrowth being able to check offensive grasses types for it as it has trouble with them especially Tapu bulu as it can also wall all of it’s attacks and can only be u-turned on.

:ss/Tangrowth: :ss/Tapu koko: :ss/Landorus-Therian: :ss/Urshifu-rapid strike: :ss/clefable:
:poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball:
The 5th mon I decided to choose is clefable this is due to it being able to check dragapult and kyurem while also functioning as safety coating against weavile being able to absorb knock offs from it.It also provides some offensive pressure to the team with it being able to use a cm set and electric terrain can help boost it’s thunder against things such as toxapex,Tapu fini and slowking.

:ss/Tangrowth: :ss/Tapu koko: :ss/Landorus-Therian: :ss/Urshifu-rapid strike: :ss/clefable: :ss/dragonite:
:poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball: :poke ball:
The final mon I decided to add to this team is dragonite this is because this team lacks hazard control and a way around heatran so dragonite was a perfect for in the last slot while also being a failsafe against offensive grasses if tangrowth is gone.

tangrowth
:tangrowth:
Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Focus Blast
- Sleep Powder
This is the standard set used by tangrowth it has max def as it needs as much def as possible in order to soak up an punish an urshifu close combat and it’s specially defensive stats aren’t the best and would be a waste to invest in as it falls to most special attacks already.Rocky helmet is my item of choice due to it’s pure utility as it can make weavile and urshifu’s multi hit contact into big chip being able to chip physical attackers is a great trait to have.

tapu koko
:Tapu koko:
Tapu Koko @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dazzling Gleam
- Thunderbolt
- Calm Mind
- Roost
This is the Tapu koko set I decided to choose due to it’s ability to sweep late game with ease while providing speed control to this team alongside heavy duty boots and roost it has quite a bit of longevity and it covers the biggest threats to tangrowth being flying types while also being able to hit Tapu fini and dragonite super effectively. After urshifu has done it’s job koko can come in and clean up the rest of the team being able to use passive mons such as clefable and corvikinght as an entry point to set up.

Landorus-Therian
:Landorus-Therian:
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
This is the standard defensive landorous-therian set.The speed evs are used in order to outspeed modest offensive heatran while having max hp and dumping the rest in the def.it’s able to spread status alongside tangrowth while being able to check Zeraora and dragonite with it’s intimidate ability and volt blocking capabilities while also providing stealth rock support for this team.

Urshifu-Rapid strike
:Urshifu-Rapid strike:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet
This is the main breaker of the team and it benefits greatly from the fact that tangrowth and dragonite check offensive grasses and Tapu koko being able to clean after it has punched a few holes in the opposing team.I decided to use aqua jet>ice punch in order to pick off weakened faster threats such as weavile and dragapult. This set has the standard urshifu evs and has jolly in order to outspeed things such as nidoking, kyurem and specs Tapu lele.

Clefable
:Clefable:
Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunder
This is the set I decided to choose for Clefable as it provides offensive pressure with cm and can function as another sweeper alongside Tapu koko and it’s thunder is boosted by Tapu koko’s electric terrain. The power boost from electric terrain helps it dent things which otherwise can prove a threat to the sweep such as toxapex. The evs are in order for it to get 3 hit koed by a dragapult shadow ball and work as a way around weavile alongside urshifu-rapid strike.

Dragonite
:dragonite:
Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Roost
- Defog
This is the final mon of the team and it’s ev spread is the standard utility set with defog>heal bell as I need hazard control for this team.I decided to choose the utility set due to this reason and the fact that it functions as a great tank and can run ice beam to surprise landorous-t and garchomp on the switch.Another reason I decided to choose this set is due to earthquake being able to beat heatran 1v1 as my team has quite a bit of trouble switching into the combination of earth power, magma storm and taunt.

Here are some replays I feel show how the team functions to help the raters see how the team works properly
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8ou-1364121744
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8ou-1364128718
I also wanted to mention a tiny consistency issue I feel the raters are going to address but I feel is fine here, this issue being electric terrain+a sleep move. This might seem counter intuitive at first until you realize that Tapu koko is cm and is usually used late game or against flying types sparingly.Koko still has great synergy with tangrowth although this tiny inconsistency is present it’s easy to work around during a battle
.

That’s all I have for today, any and all advice is appreciated as I want to make this the best it can be.

Just curious, why does this team not run something like Scizor for coverage VS things like Lele and other Fairy types that shred this team due to the lack of Fairy and Psychic resistances? I feel like that is an important inconsistency that's missed, it means you get steamrolled by a lot of offensive cores.

I was wondering about that, too. One of the most frustrating thing when teambuilding is finding a fairy resistance, without adding another weakness that the team already has. For example, if :dragonite: is replaced by :scizor:, that would mean the team finds a hard opportunity to switch in on :heatran:. Maybe scizor can be the defog set to replace :dragonite:, but as I said heatran is gonna be a problem. This is a trade in my opinion, and I think replacing dnite is the best choice, though all of the things I implemented in the above matters.

Yea this is a problem for this team Tapu lele especially destroys most of the mons but I thought I would be able to play around it offensively using Tapu koko to re set the terrain and hit it with thunderbolts.Although playing around it offensively isn’t the best idea I really don’t know where I can fit a steel here.

Instead of scizor you could use blissey, it doesn’t take much from heatran and you could run twave to cripple tran

I would tend to agree that the Dragonite adds too many weaknesses compared to what it helps check, at least at face value. You currently have 4 mons hit SE by Freeze Dry for instance. I could see this being a good team for a Bulk Up Corviknight, or at least one with Aerial Ace to help scare out grass types. If you're really worried about Heatran, you can have Corviknight U-turn in your Landorus or Urshifu-R as needed. If not Corviknight, a Fire type of some sort (your own Heatran for instance) would seriously help your overall Ice and Fairy weaknesses.

Hey Ccn, as I promised you, I took some time to think about this team. I’ll give my thoughts on it and an idea I had without going too much in depth in the rate because you already have good metagame knowledge.

They are some nice ideas here and Calm Mind Tapu Koko :tapu koko: is indeed a cool (World Cup) tech. Tangrowth :tangrowth: is a Pokemon with a lot of defensive potential and thus I like your idea to build a team based on it. Now, the team has one main weakness which is that it’s way too frail on the special side and it is, in my opinion, a big issue for a team rather slow and defensive.

Thus, my idea is to replace Landorus-T :landorus-therian: by Blissey :blissey:. This can sound like a weird change, but I think that Landorus-T doesn’t bring that much utility here. Zeroara :zeraora: can easily be dealt with by Tangrowth and you should be fine againt Tapu Koko :tapu koko: with Blissey and your own Koko. As Landorus-T, Blissey can be used as a slow pivot and a Rock setter but the difference is that you will have a way more reliable answer to Kyurem :kyurem:, Dragapult :dragapult:, and other special threats that may be painful to deal with here. Tapu Lele :tapu lele: is still hard to keep in check even if it should be easier with Blissey than with Landorus and Heatran :heatran: who is the other special attacker that threaten Blissey is not an issue with Dragonite :dragonite: on the back. As for the moveset, you can use something like this:

blissey.gif

Blissey (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Teleport
- Stealth Rock

This change will make the team a bit more defensive and passive but as it has already a very defensive structure and two good offensive options + a deadly Calm Mind Clefable, I think it should be fine. Opposing Landorus-T could be harder to deal with in matchups where Tangrowth already need to check some other Pokemon, but most of the time you should be fine especially against defensive Landorus.

Don’t hesitate to try this change and see if it works (or not). Don’t hesitate to shoot me a pm if you have a feedback on it or just a question. Have a nice day!

tysm for the suggestions ironwater I’ll try out the team on ladder later.

Overall, really solid team. I would only suggest two things. Since the combo of tangrowth, dragonite and landorus serve as great physical defenders, i would suggest you drop the bold nature on clefable and run full special defense, since it would serve you well as a special wall and give you a better way to deal with tapu lele. you can even drop something like thunder for teleport to punish the opponent for switching into their physical attacker and keep momentum. the second thing i recommend is running u-turn and/or taunt on tapu koko. I personally find these moves to be quite useful on koko since ground types cant switch in for free on u-turn as well as provides good momentum and works well with HDBs, taunt stops setup and hazard options, and both of these moves just overall provide good team support and keep it from being switched into freely by mons like nidoking and landorus.

Hey there Coolcodename this is a nice time with an offensive and defensive synergy between Tapu Koko and Tangrowth especially how the rest of the team is working together in order to open up for Tapu Koko to be an effective win-condition with Calm Mind. This team has a lot of noticeable flaws where :kyurem: and :tapu lele: are very problematic for this team to switch into, while some minor threats such as :weavile: and :bisharp: can also be problematic. The likes of :dragapult: and :heatran:, especially with the lack of Heal Bell on Dragonite can be problematic, and while Tapu Koko itself does provide this team a bit of some speed generally wouldn't want it to be the only form of speed control.

Major Changes
212.png
036.png

The first change I would recommend is going Swords Dance defensive Scizor, over Calm Mind Clefable the reason for this change helps improves the teams matchup against Tapu Lele and Kyurem which where two big issues for the team and can mitigate them for the team, and while you do become a bit worse against fat teams, but not so much especially with the next change. Scizor is also nice for this team since it could also revenge Weavile and can provide more momentum with U-turn for the team as well. While the spread will be the standard Scizor spread, we will however be running 30 Speed on IVs for that slower U-turn against other Scizors.

788.png
149.png

Since I wanted to include some better speed control and still provide defogger decided to go with Choice Scarf Tapu Fini replacing Utility Dragonite, and is able to cover a handful of things similarily like Heatran, Urshifu-R, and Volcarona, but is also able to handle against Weavile and soft checking Dragapult as well. While terrains will overlap with Tapu Koko this goes well for the other teammates, except Landorus-T, who dislikes getting statused and can use that to their advantage. The EV spread for Tapu Fini will be of 252 HP / 44 SpD / 212 Spe with a Timid nature, the Speed investment with Choice Scarf lets Tapu Fini be faster than Zeraora and the rest of investment goes into bulk in order to better check Weavile, Heatran, Dragapult, and Urshifu-R.

Minor Changes
645-t.png

With Tapu Fini in the team and wanting to have backup switchin into Volcarona and Heatran, while still being able to check the likes of Zeraora and Garchomp decided to change the EV spread into a mixed defense investment the ev spread will be 252 HP / 128 Def / 116 SpD / 16 Spe, the speed investment lets you be faster than Special Defensive Heatran and the Special Defense investment lets you stomach +1 Fire Blast from offensive Voclarona even after a round of Stealth Rocks, while the rest of investment is dumped in to Defense for better switch into Zeraora and Garchomp. With these changes it helps out Tapu Fini not be overwhelmed in checking Heatran and Volcarona, while still being able to check Garchomp and Zeraora for the team.

Those where all the changes for the team as they greatly improve the matchup against threats that gave this team some struggle. You do struggle with fat teams but with Urshifu-R and Tapu Fini you can cause some pressure especially once Tapu Fini gets Tricks Toxapex which can let Urshifu-R be a lot more threatening against those type of teams. There are still some noticeable threats to lookout for such as :melmetal: and :dragonite: can be seen as an issue for this team, and also :slowking-galar: can be annoying to switching into especially when paired with wallbreakers abusing Future Sight support. Overall this team was solid before the changes and with these changes definitely would recommend to give it a try, with all that being said let me know your experience with these changes or any issues you come across, have a good one.
