Tapu Fini [QC 1/2]

[SET COMMENTS]

Tapu Fini shines as a unique defensive piece because of its Misty Terrain ability; good bulk and typing that gives great resistances to Dragon, Water, and Fire. Its typing allows it to come in and Defog on many prevalent hazard setters such as Heatran, Greninja-Ash, and both Tyranitar forms. Tapu Finis STAB coverage combined with its great bulk let it fare well against other hazard setters such as Gliscor, Landorus-Therian, and Garchomp, forcing their defensive sets out and getting a Defog off while taking little from their attacks due to Tapu Finis great bulk. Offensive sets of these pokemon can throw Tapu Fini off because of their ability to Swords Dance and deal massive damage. Otherwise, it can force out other threats like Weavile and Hydreigon to get crucial Knock Offs on common switch-ins like Toxapex, Blissey, Ferrothorn, and many Magearna sets. While Surf seems to be an appealing option over Scald due to Misty Terrain taking away Scalds burn chance, Scald can burn some important non-grounded opponents, most noticeably Landorus-Therian and Rillaboom, who takes away Misty Terrain with its own Grassy Terrain, while having no opportunity cost other than 10 base power. Taunt is a great option over Knock Off as it can deal with more passive Pokemon better such as Toxapex or Blissey. Tapu Finis EV spread is designed to outspeed modest Heatran and everything slower than it for instance Timid Magearna and 12 EVs are put into SpAtk to 2HKO offensive Heatrans, the rest of the EVs are placed into HP and SpD to maximize overall bulk, preferring special bulk to deal with Greninja-Ash and Heatran even better.

Because of Tapu Finis Misty Surges ability being able to prevent status, physical Pokemon susceptible to burn and Pokemon who are weak to toxic such as Tangrowth, Garchomp, and Tyranitar are amazing partners. Powerful, physically attacking teammates such as Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile benefit from the provided burn immunity. Because Tapu Fini dislikes the presence of Grass-Types and Electric-Types like Tapu Koko and Kartana on the opposing team, a Ferrothorn, Tangrowth, or Garchomp can take good care of checking them. In return, Tapu Fini resists Fire Attacks from the likes of Heatran and also prevents Scald burns from Water-Types. Setup Sweepers benefit greatly from Tapu Finis support. Teammates such as Mega Charizard X, Mega Garchomp, Swords Dance Kartana, and Mega Scizor benefit greatly from Tapu Finis Misty Terrain and the status immunity that comes with it. Ground-Types such as Garchomp or Landorus-Therian can be used as great partners to Tapu Fini due to being immune to threatening Volt Switches and checking Cinderace for it.

Nature's Madness can be used over one of Tapu Finis STABs. It benefits in many matchups where Tapu Fini would normally struggle to make any progress in such as the Toxapex and Ferrothorn matchup, especially when paired with Taunt over Knock Off. Choice Scarf as a held item can be used on Tapu Fini to hold a very different niche. Its new fast speed tier matched with its impressive bulk lets it switch in on and kill many offensive threats in the meta including Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham. It runs its STABs along with options such as Trick, Ice Beam or Defog on this Choice Scarf set. Trick is utilized to cripple common switch-ins such as Toxapex and Slowbro, Ice Beam is notably used to OHKO Garchomp, and Defog is used for the same utility it has on Tapu Finis more common sets. Sacrificing Tapu Finis longevity and defensive niche while being subpar as a Choice Scarf attacker makes this set not worth using on most teams.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-Types**: Kartana and Serperior can switch in and get great offensive opportunities off of Tapu Fini with their Grass STAB. Rillaboom can come in but it risks getting burned by Scald since it sets Grassy Terrain

**Electric Moves**: Electric STAB moves from the likes of Magnezone, Tapu Koko, Dracozolt, and Zapdos and coverage from Mega Mawile, Victini, and Magearna all threaten Tapu Fini with massive chip damage. Magnezone and Tapu Koko can even threaten Tapu Fini with OHKOs on certain sets.

**Hazard Damage and Chip**: Tapu Fini does not have access to any reliable recovery outside of Leftovers. This makes it hard to repeatedly come in on hazards to defog and also hard to repeatedly come in on hard hits and Volt Switches. Knock Off threatens Tapu Fini greatly as Leftovers is its only source of recovery and it relies on Leftovers for its durability.

Hey 413X, please include Calm Mind Tapu Fini as a separate set here, it's arguably its best set and definitely deserves its own writing. Ping us when you add that set and then we will check this.

Guard edit: this isn't actually necessary, but you're free to include it if you want to! lmk what you decide

Tapu Fini's unique combination of moves, ability, stats, and typing gives it an ability to shine in the National Dex metagame. I'd like some specifics about its stats and typing; what stats are good and what are some good and important resistances that it gets? Its typing allows it to come in and Defog on many prevalent hazard setters such as Heatran, Greninja-Ash, and both Tyranitar forms. Tapu Finis attributes also let it fare well against other hazard setters such as Gliscor, Landorus-Therian, and Garchomp. This tells me virtually nothing; why does Tapu Fini matchup well against these threats specifically? Just saying "its attributes" is very vague. Otherwise, it can force out other threats like Weavile and Hydreigon to get crucial Knock Offs on common switch-ins like Toxapex, Blissey, Ferrothorn, and many Magearna sets. Talk about why Scald is used over Surf because its not immediately obvious to some newer players. Also mention Taunt here, its nice for Toxapex and Clef. Tapu Finis EV spread is designed to outspeed modest Heatran and everything slower than it for instance Jolly Max Speed Tyranitar, Jolly Ttar isn't notable at all, focus on something like Timid Magearna instead the rest of the EVs are placed into HP and SpD to maximize overall bulk, preferring special bulk to deal with Greninja-Ash and Heatran even better. Mention 2HKOing Heatran with Scald with the edited EV spread

Because of Tapu Finis Misty Surge's ability to prevent status, physical Pokemon susceptible to burn and Pokemon who are weak to toxic such as Tangrowth and Not sure what happened here but a couple more examples would be prudent; a lot of things like Misty Terrain are amazing partners. Powerful, physically attacking teammates such as Medicham-Mega and Mawile-Mega benefit the greatest from being immune to burn because a common option to take away their immense power is taken away This was worded super weirdly beforehand Because Tapu Fini dislikes the presence of Grass-Types and Electric-Types on the opposing team, a Ferrothorn can take good care of checking them. I think more options other than Ferrothorn would be prudent here. In return, Tapu Fini resists Fire Attacks and prevents burns from them. This is very general and oversimplifies matters; Fini doesn't check many Fire-types like Cinderace and Zard Y, you have to list specific Fire-types that it handles here. There also aren't really any Fire-types in the tier that actively try to spread burns; that mostly comes from Scalding Water-types. Charizard-Mega-X has exceptional synergy with Tapu Fini. Charizard-Mega-X can take many hits that Tapu Fini is weak to and with Misty Terrain its setup cannot be crippled by status, and it can come in easier with Tapu Finis Defog support. Zard X is an extremely specific mention here; I don't think its bad necessarily but I'd rather you talk about setup sweepers in general and mention Zard X as one of them.

Mention bulky Ground-types to block Volt Switch and handle Cinderace.

Nature's Madness can be used over one of Tapu Finis STABs. It benefits in many matchups where Tapu Fini would normally struggle to make any progress in such as the Toxapex and Ferrothorn matchup, especially when paired with Taunt over Knock Off. Taunt also prevents hazards from being sent in from slower pokemon such as the aforementioned Toxapexs Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rocks from Clefable. Moved Taunt up to a mention so remove it from here.
This should be one paragraph

Choice Scarf as a held item can be used on Tapu Fini to hold a very different niche. Its new fast speed tier matched with its impressive bulk lets it switch in on and kill many offensive threats in the meta including Lopunny-Mega and Medicham-Mega. Cinderace is by far the most important target for Scarf Fini so mention it.It runs its STABs along with Trick and Hidden Power Fire on this Choice Scarf set, Trick is to cripple common switch-ins such as Toxapex and Slowbro and Hidden Power Fire is used to revenge kill Kartana as it usually beats Tapu Fini and is baited in. HP Fire is an option I guess, but its very specific and most Kartana will realize somethings up if a Fini is hard switching in to revenge kill it especially if there aren't leftovers. Mention options like Defog or even Ice Beam as last moveslots over HP Fire.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-Types**: Kartana and Serperior can switch in and get great offensive opportunities off of Tapu Fini with their Grass STAB. Rillaboom can come in but it risks getting burned by Scald since it sets Grassy Terrain

**Electric Moves**: Electric STAB moves from the likes of Magnezone, Tapu Koko, and Zapdos and coverage from Mawile-Mega, Victini, and more give specifics instead of saying "and more"; a newer player might not know what falls into the "and more" paragraph all threaten Tapu Fini with massive chip damage.

Mention Knock Off being very threatening to it and some Pokemon that can force Knock onto Fini
