Tapu Koko [QC 0/3]

Status
Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]

* Tapu Koko is one of the best offensive pivots thanks to its useful defensive typing, amazing Speed stat, and access to U-turn.
* It's a great check to Pokemon like Tornadus-T and Arghonaut, which are very present within the current metagame, meaning that it often gets opportunities to switch into play.
* To add onto that, Tapu Koko's outstanding Speed tier also allows it to check potent offensive threats like Kartana and Greninja.
* Additionally, Tapu Koko is quite self sufficient because a lot of common Ground-types like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Mega Garchomp are quad weak to Hidden Power Ice or take a lot of damage from Dazzling Gleam. On top of that, Tapu Koko's capable of baiting Equilibra in and can use it to get another teammate in with U-turn, making it a key enabler for faster-paced teams.
* However, Tapu Koko struggles against teams with bulky Grass-types such as Jumbao, Ferrothorn, and Tangrowth.
* It's also quickly worn down by hazards and unresisted hits, meaning that it's often very pressured.

[SET]
name: Shuca Berry
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Hidden Power Ice
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Roost
item: Shuca Berry
ability: Electric Surge
nature: Timid
evs: 32 HP / 224 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Hidden Power Ice lets Tapu Koko pressure Ground-types like Landorus-T, Mega Garchomp, and Gliscor.
* U-turn is preferred to Volt Switch to give Tapu Koko the freedom to pivot against Equilibra.
* Roost allows Tapu Koko to stay healthy to check Pokemon such as Tornadus-T, Arghonaut, and Hawlucha.

Set Details
========

* A Shuca Berry is run to allow Tapu Koko to comfortably live a Ground-type attack from unboosted Ground-types like Landorus-T and Mega Garchomp, allowing Tapu Koko to safely retaliate with Hidden Power Ice.
* 32 HP investment allows Tapu Koko to avoid getting OHKOd by +2 High Jump Kick from Hawlucha and Ash-Greninja's Choice Specs-boosted Water Shuriken after Stealth Rock damage.

Usage Tips
========

* Generally speaking, Tapu Koko doesn't have to predict early-game at all; it's usually fine to fire off a U-turn to gain momentum.
* Landorus-T, Mega Garchomp, and Gliscor could attempt to block a Thunderbolt, but it's unnecessary to predict them switching in, as Shuca Berry means Tapu Koko won't be immediately pressured the following turn.
* Make sure to keep Tapu Koko very healthy, as it has to be in order for it to actually live an Earthquake from Landorus-T or Mega Garchomp, though.

Team Options
========

* Fighting- and Fire-types like Mega Gallade, Mega Medicham, and Victini benefit greatly from Tapu Koko's ability to lure Equilibra in, which they can then use to fire off an attack for free.
* Pokemon such as Heatran and Tornadus-T, which can consistently deal with Grass-types are amazing teammates.
* Tapu Koko forces an absurd amount of switches, so Spikes setters like Greninja, Ferrothorn, and Arghonaut are particularly useful to quickly rack up damage.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Dazzling Gleam
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Roost / Hidden Power Ice
item: Choice Specs
ability: Electric Surge
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Dazzling Gleam allows Tapu Koko to deal with Dragon-types such as Pajantom.
* While U-turn may seem odd on a set that focuses around breaking down teams with Choice Specs-boosted moves, U-turn allows Tapu Koko to pivot out against Ground-types, which is invaluable.
* Although it may look weird on a Choice item user, there's good reason to run Roost on Tapu Koko. Roost notably allows it to stay healthy against Pokemon that can wear it down over time like Tornadus-T and Arghonaut.
* Hidden Power Ice can be used instead to OHKO Landorus-T and Gliscor.
* Hidden Power Fire is also an option to deal with Ferrothorn, and to chip down Equilibra, but Tapu Koko generally struggles to fit it.

Set Details
========

* Choice Specs significantly boosts Tapu Koko's Special Attack, allowing it to consistently threaten bulky and offensive builds alike.

Usage Tips
========

* Tapu Koko should switch into Pokemon that it checks such as Tornadus-T, Arghonaut, and Toxapex to create opportunities for itself to use U-turn or break down teams. Be wary of Knock Off, though.
* Also, you should be wary around Protect users like Celesteela and Heatran, which can scout what Tapu Koko locks itself into.

Team Options
========

* Equilibra is a huge bother for Tapu Koko, so Pokemon that benefit from the fact that Tapu Koko tends to draw it in, such as Mega Gallade, Victini, and Mega Charizard Y make for good teammates.
* Pokemon that can take advantage of Grass-types like Mega Mawile, Mega Medicham, and Volkraken make for good teammates.
* Other pivots such as Tornadus-T and Landorus-T are useful, constantly giving Tapu Koko opportunities to switch in and pressure the opposition.
* In tandem with Spikes, Tapu Koko can overwhelm defensive Grass-types pretty easily thanks to its absurd power. Good options to set Spikes are Greninja, Arghonaut, and Ferrothorn.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Electrium Z can be run instead of Shuca Berry to pressure Heatran better, but it may leave Tapu Koko liable against Ground-types.
* Thunder is an option that can be run on dedicated rain teams.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Grass-types**: Tangrowth and Amoonguss resist Tapu Koko's Electric-type STAB moves, while Hidden Power Ice and Dazzling Gleam do very little damage to them, and have access to Regenerator, meaning that they won't constantly lose momentum. Other Grass-types like Ferrothorn and Jumbao also resist Tapu Koko's Electric-type STAB moves, but will lose momentum whenever they try to recover HP. Necturna and Caribolt can use certain Tapu Koko sets as setup bait, though they take a lot from Choice Specs-boosted Dazzling Gleam.

**Dragon-types**: Dragon-types such as Pajantom, Mega Latios, Mega Latias, and Kyurem-B can switch into any set that's lacking Dazzling Gleam. However, they are also quickly overwhelmed by repeated Volt Switches.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types like Equilibra, Fidgit, and Excadrill are punishing Pokemon that don't really mind anything Tapu Koko can throw at them, though they should be wary of U-turn. Other Ground-types like Landorus-T, Mega Garchomp, and Gliscor can punish Choice Specs sets for locking into Thunderbolt, but are easily overwhelmed.

**Faster Offensive Pokemon**: Although Tapu Koko is naturally quite fast, there's still a decent amount of offensive threats that outspeed it. Examples include Mega Alakazam, Ash-Greninja, and Choice Scarf users like Kitsunoh and Tapu Lele.

**Special Walls**: Blanket special walls, namely Chansey and Assault Vest Tyranitar can easily shrug off anything that Tapu Koko can throw at them. They will constantly lose momentum to U-turn, though.

[OVERVIEW]

* Tapu Koko is one of the best offensive pivots thanks to its amazing Speed stat and access to Electric Surge, substantially powering up its Electric-type moves.
* Furthermore, its typing is also pretty useful defensively, allowing it to check Pokemon like Tornadus-T and Arghonaut consistently when used in tandem with Roost.
* Additionally, Tapu Koko is quite self sufficient, because a lot of common Ground-types like Garchomp and Landorus-T are quad weak to Hidden Power Ice, meaning that Tapu Koko can open up a lot of opportunities for itself to spam Volt Switch.
* Tapu Koko's good Speed also allows it to check potent offensive threats like Kartana, Mega Medicham Greninja, and Mega Diancie.
* However, Tapu Koko can also really struggle against teams with Tangrowth and Ground-types like Smokomodo, which aren't weak to don't fear Hidden Power Ice. - does it struggle against teams featuring both or just either of those? If you just want to say that Smokomodo in particular doesn't care about hp ice instead of both, then move the "aren't weak to" in front of "like" in the sentence.
* Additionally, Tapu Koko doesn't hit super hard without a boosting item, so it can be quite underwhelming in practice against prepared teams.

Moves
========

* Hidden Power Ice lets Tapu Koko pressure Ground-types like Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Gliscor, which is particularly important because they are immune to Volt Switch.
* Roost allows Tapu Koko to stay healthy against potent and durable Pokemon such as Tornadus-T, Toxapex, and Hawlucha.

Set Details

* A Shuca Berry is run to allow Tapu Koko to comfortably live a Ground-type attack from unboosted Ground-types like Landorus-T and Garchomp, allowing Tapu Koko to safely retaliate with Hidden Power Ice.
* 32 HP investment allows Tapu Koko to avoid getting OHKOd by +2 High Jump Kick from Hawlucha and Ash-Greninja's Choice Specs-boosted Water Shuriken after Stealth Rock damage.

Usage Tips
========

* Generally speaking, Tapu Koko doesn't have to predict early-game at all; it's usually fine to fire off a Volt Switch, because Shuca Berry Tapu Koko doesn't get punished by Ground-types like other sets do.
* For similar reasons, predicting a Ground-type to switch in with Hidden Power Ice in general is usually not important.
* Once Tapu Koko has dealt with a Ground-type, it should be played aggressively to constantly gain momentum with Volt Switch or break down teams with Thunderbolt in case they lack another Electric-type resist.

Team Options
========

* Powerful wallbreakers such as Mega Mawile and Kartana benefit from Tapu Koko's ability to pivot them into play. Additionally, they appreciate Tapu Koko's ability to deal with Ground-types. - Kart kinda destroys every ground type in this meta. It's worth mentioning that Koko supports Kartana's matchup against Tornadus-T
* Similarly, Heatran also appreciates Tapu Koko's ability to deal with Ground-types and can pressure Grass-types like Tangrowth in return.
* Other Pokemon, such as Tornadus-T, that can consistently deal with Grass-types in general are useful teammates. - Mons that take advantage of Grass-types should be first in this section imo, Auru Torn Tran etc.
* Tapu Koko forces an absurd amount of switches, so Spikes setters like Greninja, Ferrothorn, and Arghonaut are particularly useful to quickly rack up damage.

* Volt Switch allows Tapu Koko to continuously pressure Dragon- and Grass-types like Pajantom and Jumbao.
* Hidden Power Ice hits Ground-types such as Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Gliscor, hitting them is especially significant because Tapu Koko's objective is to spam Volt Switch as much and as freely as possible.
* Although it may look weird on a Choice item user, there's good reason to run Roost on Tapu Koko. Roost notably allows it to stay healthy against Pokemon that can wear it down over time like Tornadus-T and Toxapex. - Worth mentioning that it can get Knocked?
* However, if these Pokemon are already handled by Tapu Koko's teammates, Dazzling Gleam may be run to pressure Dragon-types much more consistently.
- Mention HP Fire + Gleam either here or in OO.

Set Details
========

* Choice Specs significantly boosts Tapu Koko's Special Attack, allowing it to consistently threaten bulky and offensive builds alike.

Usage Tips
========

* As long as the opponent has a combination of a Grass- and Ground-type, prediction is quite important, because Tapu Koko will not be able to mindlessly use Volt Switch like it wants to.
* So, be considerate about when to use Hidden Power Ice and when to use Volt Switch.
* It should be noted that Hidden Power Ice is relatively weak against foes that are not weak to it.
* Tapu Koko should switch into Pokemon that it checks like Tornadus-T and Toxapex to create opportunities for itself to use Volt Switch or break down teams.

Team Options
========

* Pokemon that can take advantage of Grass-types like Mega Mawile, Mega Medicham, and Volkraken benefit from Tapu Koko's ability to draw in Grass-types.
* Other Pokemon with access to Volt Switch or U-turn, like Magearna and Landorus-T are useful, constantly giving Tapu Koko opportunities to switch in and pressure the opposition.
* Tapu Koko in tandem with Spikes can overwhelm defensive Grass-types thanks to tis absurd power. Good options to set Spikes are Greninja, Arghonaut, and Ferrothorn.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Taunt makes up for Tapu Koko's passivity by preventing foes from setting hazards and removing its screens with Defog for example.
* U-turn is preferred to Volt Switch to let Tapu Koko pivot out of unfavorable match ups against Ground-types.

Set Details
========

* 248 HP investment is run to give Tapu Koko as many opportunities to set screens as possible.

Usage Tips
========

* Tapu Koko should be sent out early-game to set screens and prevent hazards from Pokemon like Toxapex from going up or Tornadus-T to remove hazards and screens.
* Even though Tapu Koko is optimally used as a lead, do not let it go down too early, because screens will often be needed more than once in a match.
- It may be important to Taunt setup sweepers to stop them from winning. Point out that if Hawlucha's seed hasn't been activated yet, this may not be necessary.

Team Options
========

* Tapu Koko synergizes excellently with setup sweepers like Magearna, Aurumoth, Necturna, and Hawlucha, because it enables countless amounts of setup opportunities.
* Additionally, other leads such as Landorus-T, Excadrill, and Greninja are useful on the HO teams that Tapu Koko fits on to pressure the opposition.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* A set with Fairium Z and Thunderbolt, Dazzling Gleam, Hidden Power Fire, and Calm Mind can be run as a niche breaker against bulky teams. Fairium Z notably allows Tapu Koko to pressure Necturna. Tapu Koko prefers the immediate power of Choice Specs sets and the freedom of Shuca Berry sets to pivot around, though.
* Electrium Z can be run instead of Shuca Berry to pressure Heatran better, but it leaves Tapu Koko liable against Ground-types.
* A Choice Scarf set with Wild Charge, U-turn, Brave Bird, and Hidden Power Ice can be run to pressure fast Pokemon like Mega Alakazam and even some setup sweepers like Magearna, Aurumoth, and Volcarona.
* Lastly, Thunder is an option on dedicated rain teams.

Chansey and maybe AV Ttar would be good to have in this section, since they take barely any damage from Koko's attacks. Mention that they still lose momentum to Volt Switch.
