Online Competition Team Star Challenge (Nov. 8-10)

Single battles
Every team MUST contain a Revavroom
Every team CAN ONLY use Pokemon that were used by one of the Team Star bosses. The added Pokemon on the rematch teams are included, but Penny's team is not--no Eevees for you.
  • Giacomo: Pawniard, Cacturne, Honchkrow, Mabosstiff, Krookodile, Kingambit
  • Mela: Torkoal, Coalossal, Houndoom, Arcanine, Armarouge
  • Atticus: Skuntank, Muk, Revavroom, Dragalge, Toxapex
  • Ortega: Azumarill, Wigglytuff, Dachsbun, Klefki, Hatterene
  • Eri: Toxicroak, Passimian, Lucario, Annihilape, Primeape
A rather limited field there, likely to center around a couple choices like Annihilape and Azumarill, but that's what they do sometimes.

Everyone who participates in the competition receives a Starf Berry, which is normally associated with battle facilities but since SV doesn't have those, the way you get one in this game is by playing Emotional Spectrum Practice in Alfornada.

Serebii actually indicates that you must select Revavroom among the Pokemon you fight with, not just put in your team: https://www.serebii.net/scarletviolet/onlinecompetitions/teamstarchallenge.shtml
You have to bring Revavroom to battle each battle

Serebii.net's home page also says that "you must use a Revavroom in one of the three Pokémon you bring".

Some things I've already noticed about this meta besides Annihilape looking meta-defining:
  • Flying should be a pretty good Tera type, especially among Ground-weak mons: not a single legal Pokemon has STAB that is super-effective against Flying
  • Water is also a great Tera type, as the only legal Pokemon with super-effective STAB against it is Cacturne
  • Most of the legal Pokemon are physical attackers - the only special attackers to worry about are Lucario, Armarouge, Hatterene, Houndoom, Arcanine, Torkoal, Dragalge, Cacturne, and maybe Toxicroak, Wigglytuff, and Klefki
  • Arcanine, Houndoom, and Primeape are tied for fastest legal Pokemon
  • Toxapex looks like a legitimate defensive threat, with only Hatterene, Armarouge, and Krookodile having STABs that are super-effective against it - Toxapex looks Taunt- and Encore-weak, but that can be patched up with Mental Herb to use Toxic and Recover through those moves - Annihilape can use Final Gambit to OHKO it anyway, though
  • Kingambit with the proper Tera type probably still tears through teams OU-style (except with Defiant instead of Supreme Overlord)

Torkoal being the only reliable weather setter means that a Sun archetype looks strong, likely alongside Houndoom because of its high Speed and Sucker Punch resistance. I wonder if Trick Room with Dragalge would be any good?
Also though it's completely unnotable otherwise because this meta has lower general offensive pressure as one of the only Pokemon in the game with Minimize Muk can do something like this and just sit on half of everything if you absolutely hate having fun:

Muk @ Leftovers / Bright Powder
Ability: Poison Touch
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 228 HP / 164 Def / 116 SpD
Impish Nature
- Minimize
- Knock Off / Drain Punch
- Taunt
- Rest

Here's a list of where every Pokemon allowed in this ranks on Speed. Made it for myself, but hopefully it's helpful to people here:

95: Primeape, Arcanine, Houndoom, Dachsbun
92: Krookodile
90: Lucario, Revavroom, Annihilape
85: Toxicroak, Mabosstiff
84: Skuntank
80: Passimian
75: Klefki, Armarouge
71: Honchkrow
60: Pawniard
55: Cacturne
50: Muk, Azumarill, Kingambit
45: Wigglytuff
44: Dragalge
35: Toxapex
30: Coalossal
29: Hatterene
20: Torkoal

I feel like Krookodile is going to be a popular pick. It ranks pretty high on the Speed list, and Ground just looks like it'll be a really strong type here. More than half of the Pokemon allowed are weak to it, and only Cacturne and Honchkrow resist it. And it gets Stone Edge to help deal with Honchkrow and any Tera Flyings, as well as Gunk Shot to help against Cacturne and any Tera Grasses.

I would strongly consider including either Haze or Clear Smog in your team because there are some pretty potent set-up Pokémon available. Minimize Muk will otherwise be a nuisance as well as ID + CM + Stored Power + Draining Kiss Klefki. Not to mention Swords Dance and Bulk Up which will be plentiful.

Luckily there are quite a few Haze users available, including Revavroom itself.

Sounds really fun, I think Pex will be good with physical investment since most of the pokemon are physical attackers, with its only massive threats being Armorouge, for example, and it can easily run surf to cover it
