Team ThundurDos

My First OU RMT!
Changes are in Bold and Italics

Introduction

Hello everyone at Smogon! This is my first ever OU RMT and I'm very excited. This is my most successful team I have used this generation and feel it is a very strong rain team. As you can tell by the title, this team is centered around Gyarados and Thundurus sweeping through teams. I personally like to sweep with Gyarados just because of his sheer power in the rain. Although Thundurus is very good at what he does too. And once in a while Virizion can pull off a sweep of her own but she is mainly a check to Water/Ground guys who would otherwise wall my team. This team is very balanced and is made to set up a Gyarados/Thundurus sweep. Hope you enjoy! :)

Team Analysis

Politoed

Politoed@Choice Specs

Ability:Drizzle
Evs: 252 SAtk/ 252 Spe/ 4 HP
Modest (+SAtk -Atk)
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-HP Grass
-Focus Blast

Well you obviously need a rain inducer for a rain team and the only one is Politoed. Most people run the defensive version but I find the offensive one much better. Politoed is nothing to laugh at with his special attack reaching 306 plus his Choice Specs. I can hit unsuspecting Tyranitars with a Focus Blast and usually OHKO it. A Surf in the rain from this thing will leave a dent in pretty much anything it hits. Psychic is just for coverage for when fighting guys try to set up. Ice beam is for coverage against flying, grass and dragon types. Politoed is by far the best weather inducer because he can hit hard and take some hits as well.

Synergy

Electric- Ferrothorn, Virizion, Gastrodon

Grass- Thundurus, Virizion, Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn@Leftovers

Ability: Iron Barbs
Evs: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 SDef
Impish (+Def - SAtk)
-Gyro Ball
-Stealth Rock
-Leech Seed
-Power Whip

There is a reason this guy is the number 1 used OU pokemon. In the rain he is almost impossible to take down. His defense are both sky high and he can take almost anything thrown at him. The Evs are designed to make him as bulky as possible. He is my Stealth Rocker and he can also dish out a little damage with Power Whip. Leech seed is just to whittle away opponents and to regain health and Protect for obvious reasons. Ferrothorn is a staple for most rain teams and he deserves it.

Synergy

Fighting- Thundurus, Gyarados

Fire- Politoed, Gyarados, Gastrodon

Gyarados

Gyarados@ Lum Berry

Ability: Moxie
Evs: 28 HP/ 252 Atk/ 228 Spe
Jolly (+Spe -SAtk)
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Bounce
-Earthquake

In my opinion Gyarados is the best sweeper in the rain. After one Dragon Dance, if nothing stands in his way, he can take down an entire team. With Moxie, Gyarados's attack reaches sky high levels, and combined with his speed, nothing can stop him. Waterfall is the main move just because of how hard it hits. A boosted water move + STAB+ DD and Moxie = OHKO just about anything. Bounce is for grass who try to come in and stop him. Earthquake is just for more coverage and hits electric guys very hard. Gyarados is the most powerful physical sweeper in the rain in my opinion.
Synergy

Electric- Gastrodon, Ferrothorn, Virizion

Rock- Gastrodon, Ferrothorn, Virizion

Thundurus

Thundurus@Lum Berry

Ability: Prankster
Evs: 252 SAtk/ 252 Spe/ 4 HP
Timid (+Spe -Atk)
-Nasty Plot
-Thunder
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power [Ice]

I'm sure everyone is very aware of the most broken pokemon in the metagame, Thundurus. With amazing special attack and blazing speed, Thundurus can sweep through teams with ease. His move allow for near perfect coverage. His 100 percent accurate Thunder can hurt anything that doesn't resist it. After a Nasty Plot it is usually good game. This pokemon is so good that I would hate to see it moved to Ubers, but I'm sure there are more people out there who would love to see that happen.

Synergy

Rock- Gastrodon, Ferrothorn, Virizion

Ice- Politoed

Gastrodon

Gastrodon@Leftovers

Ability: Storm Drain
Evs: 252 HP/ 16 SAtk/ 240 SDef
Sassy (+SDef -Spe)
-Scald
-Earthquake
-Toxic
-Recover

Gastrodon is a funny looking and sounding pokemon, but he is one of the best anti weather pokemon this generation. Gastrodon serves as my check to most weather sweepers, mainly Thundurus. He is also my status inducer. He can get a burn off with scald and Toxic walls. Earthpower can hit Heatran hard if there is no rain out. Gastrodon is a strange pokemon but has turned out to be very useful and one of my favorites this gen.

Synergy

Grass- Ferrothorn, Thundurus, Virizion

Tentacruel

Tentacruel@Black Sludge

Ability: Rain Dish
Evs: 252 HP/ 240 Def/ 16 Spe
Bold (+Def -Atk)
-Toxic Spikes
-Scald
-Rapid Spin
-Protect

I took themasterofoz's advice and decided to replace Virizion with Tentacruel. I needed a reliable physical wall and Tentacruel fir perfectly. I have used him on other rain teams before and he does great. With Rain Dish recovery and Black Sludge, he gets back a lot of health every turn. Toxic spikes are always good in taking down walls. Tentacruel is a very good poke in the rain.
Synergy

Electric- Ferrothorn, Gastrodon
Ground- Thundurus, Gyarados

Thanks for reading my first OU RMT! I'm open to any criticism and will do whatever I need to do to fix my team. Thank you!

First of all nice presentation for a first. I see mixed Ttar sweeping half your team then scarfed landorus does worse. To fix the problem I suggest Rotom-w with specs to help gayarados with the sweeping' Or bulky waters like crocune and Vaporeon.

Hey there. Nice team.

First off, run Hidden Power Grass over Psychic on Politoed. This will let you decimate Gastrodon switch-ins, allowing Thundurus to sweep much more effectively late game. The only thing that Psychic hits harder than Hydro Pump in the rain is Toxicroak regardless.

On Gyarados, I recommend changing the EV Spread to 8 HP / 252 Atk / 248 Speed with an Adamant nature. Adamant lets you hit much harder, and you still outspeed basically everything you would with Jolly regardless; 248 speed EVs puts you one point above Adamant DD Dragonite. Also, change the set to Substitute / Waterfall / Bounce / Dragon Dance. This is an extremely good set for Gyarados, mainly because most Rotom-W's nowadays run Volt Switch instead of Thunderbolt, which will allow you to sub up, take the Volt Switch, and set up / kill their incoming pokemon and get a boost from Moxie. Waterfall + Bounce provides extremely solid coverage as well.

On Thundurus, run Lum Berry over Leftovers. This will allow you to get a free setup on pokemon such as Jirachi and Blissey, and makes Thundurus much more threatening.

On Gastrodon, run a Sassy nature with Earthquake over Earth Power. Earthquake hits walls like Jirachi much harder, and allows Gastrodon to defeat pokemon such as Calm Mind Jirachi and Volcarona much more effectively.

Now, one thing I noticed is that you don't really have a physical wall, which means that pokemon such as Double Dance Terrakion and DD Dragonite are major threats. Also, you need a rapid spinner very badly, as well as a good switch in to Scizors U-Turns (Gyarados will get worn down very easily from Stealth Rock) Therefore, replace Virizion, who honestly isn't doing too much for your team, with a Tentacruel.

Toxic Spikes + Rapid Spin Tentacruel
Tentacruel @ Leftovers
Ability: Rain Dish
Evs: 252 HP/ 240 Def / 16 Speed
Bold Nature
-Scald
-Protect
-Toxic Spikes
-Rapid Spin

Toxic Spikes are a valuable asset for any team, allowing one to wear down walls such as Blissey much easier. Protect + Rain Dish allows for a makeshift recovery move, as well as a valuable asset in scouting.

Finally, change Ferrothorn's spread to 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef. This is due to the fact that Tentacruel cannot handle all of your defensive problems by itself, and this new EV spread will let you take the hits of pokemon such as Dragonite and Haxorous much better. Also, run Gyro Ball over Protect on Ferrothorn. This will let you defeat pokemon such as Latios much more easily, and allow Ferrothorn to destroy Offensive DD Dragonite (since Fire Punch is weakened in rain).

Good luck.

Hi,

Looking at your team with and without TheMasterofOZ's changes, which I very much recommend, NP Celebi is a huge threat to your team. With its bulky spread, it is able to survive a Bounce from Adamant Gyarados, while KO'ing back with STAB Giga Drain. With a speedier spread, it just outspeed and KOs with Stealth Rocks on the field. Celebi then pushes through the rest of your team with ease. Something that you could consider is using a Latios over Virizion/Tentacruel. With an LO and Draco Meteor / Surf / Psyshock / Recover, you'll have ample coverage and still hit the slower Dragonite, Terrakion and non-scarf Haxorus very hard. EVs are standard of 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Spe. A small nitpick I have is that on Specs Politoed, use Surf over Hydro Pump since Hydro Pump is really extraneous with Specs + Rain. It will ensure that you don't miss a key Hydro Pump on CM Reuniclus, who can become a nuisance for your team otherwise.

Good Luck!

First of all, I'd say that Psychic is pretty redundant. Hydro Pump hits pretty much every fighting type bar Toxicroak harder, your particular moveset is walled by most Bulky Waters. I suggest running HP Grass over Psychic to give you a way of hitting stuff like Gastrodon.

I agree with Oz about Thundurus. Lum Berry means you wont be shut down by opposing Thundurus' prankster Thunder Waves.

Since you are running a Moxie Gyarados, your team has a significant problem against fighting types. Virizion really isn't doing anything for your team. You are not walled by Water Grounds at all (Ferrothorn) and you already have Ferrothorn and Gastrodon checking opposing rain teams. Virizion's low damage output due to 90 base attack means it isn't gonna be sweeping much anyways. I suggest running a Subtect staller Gliscor in place of it. This particular version of Gliscor can toxic stall pretty much anything to death, since with poison heal, you heal the Hp lost from substitute after 2 turns, which you can easily kill off with Sub+Protect. The only pokemon unaffected are steel and poison types, which you can drop easily with Earthquake. It also acts as your emergency Sand check should you lose Politoed.

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Poison Heal
Impish
252 Hp/ 176 Def/ 80 Spd
Substitute
Protect
Toxic
Earthquake

Am I the only one who runs taunt on thundurus? Also, drop ice fang for stone edge or bounce on gyarados. It's such a weak move and non stab and not in hail... Use stone edge or bounce

Thank you for the Rate! I tried out some of your suggestions and some really helped out my team. Tentacruel has been a great addition and need to be on this team. As for the other things i did take your advice on a ffew things. Thank you very much!

Surf definatly better than hydro pump for the reliability. Thanks!
