Tech Industry & Computer Science

  • This is a thread dedicated for enthusiast discussion about Computer Science and hardware. The thread can be about tech in general, but the reason I made the thread was primarily for those two topics.

  • Talking about rumors is fine as long as it is substantiated in some way.
  • Any kind of hardware discussion is fine. CPUs, GPUs, entire computers, pre-builts, smartphones, VR headsets, smart watches, etc. are all on-topic.
  • Programming languages are on-topic, and asking about them is on-topic, but please make sure you've done research ahead of time if you do ask a question; this isn't Stack Overflow.
  • Similarly, asking about something related to consumer choices is allowed, but the thread shouldn't just be about asking for hardware advice.
  • You do not need to be knowledgeable to talk in this thread, it should be welcoming to anyone who is interested in learning or just seeing what is happening as well. Let's please not devolve into Twitter.

If you're looking for the (or, a) videogame thread, here it is.

For a community that is online and is closely tied to many Pokemon-related coding projects, you would think that a thread like this would have popped up earlier.

Here are some potential starting topical events:

iPhone 16 series of phones has been released.

-New A18 processor in every variant.
-New camera.
-iOS 18 has just released, AI features are not released, scheduled for early next year.
-New camera button (that Apple and its employees refuse to call a button).

Bonus Notes for my sake: Apple Vision Pro was mentioned twice in the entire Apple keynote.

(Rumor) Xbox Division at Microsoft is "under a challenging set of revenue and profit goals..."

-Could reflect the pivot to Game Pass not working out.
-Layoffs at Xbox remain semi-frequent.
-Xbox division at Microsoft has been a low-earner for a long time.

FTC study says "self-regulation has been a failure," in regards to social media companies.

-Also mentions that social media companies have done "vast surveillance".
-Similar reports on health of users to sociologist reports (subjective, in my opinion) on the matter.
-Advocates for regulation of social media companies.

Other various stuff:

-Apple Watch's sleep apnea detection was approved by the FTC.
-Anker, power supply/battery company has recalled MagSafe iPhone batteries due to them starting fires.
(Lots of Apple stuff this week)

-Virginia court is battling Google over ad technology.
-Microsoft signed a 20-year deal to power their AI from a nuclear power plant.

I'm not really a thread-maker generally, I was thinking about a place where I could talk about some stuff like the new iPhone release and was like "wait there isn't really a good thread for that" a few days ago. Similar threads have existed in the past to my knowledge, but died.

Hope it's a good thread.

This is going to get me a lot of hate, but I don’t care! I feel Apple is very overrated. People are always rushing to buy the next iPhone, even if they don’t have stable finances. It pisses me off because, while people in other countries struggle to survive, people in the West are shopping for Apple products. I don’t care if that hurts the feelings of iSheep, NPCs, or normies out there.

However, I despise Android/Google just as much as Apple. I don’t use a smartphone despite being a so-called Gen Zer. I think smartphones are overrated in general and to an unhealthy extent.

Before smartphones, people couldn’t just go on social media and engage in mindless doom scrolling. I despise social media platforms because they aren’t truly social anymore. Nowadays, they just push rage bait, politics, and other garbage down your throat, including AI-generated content.

I just think social media and Smart Phones are overrated. Before people used to actually talk to each other, read a book, stare off into space, watch tv, play games (I'm not talking about video games), etc etc.

Honestly apple has one of the worst business models I've ever seen in my life and the only reason it's remotely profitable is because teenagers and tech-illiterate adults swear by the software for no reason. If a company with the public opinion of motorola or something tried to pull the shit they do, they'd be bankrupt by the end of the year.

That's not to say they didn't earn the initial popularity they profit off of. Earlier macbook models (pretty much anything before like 2014) are legitimately good devices today that are relatively easy to repair and upgrade. Even though the same can't be said for their older phones, they were fantastic for their time.

But you also have to compare them to the competition. Most android devices are either a fraction of the cost or come with more processing power, while all apple really has going for it is a pretty decent sphere with their operating systems and having an easy to use interface, even if it comes at the cost of most features necessary for people who plan on using their phone for anything more than doomscrolling social media. iOS has no sideloading, the devices are horrendous to repair and the apple team charges exorbitant prices to take your phone to the back and come back 2 hours later to tell you that your phone is fucked and you need to buy a new one.
