Ogerpon-W is often used to redirect attacks and threaten common Fire-types such as Incineroar and Chi-Yu and Ground-types such as Ursaluna-B and Landorus with Ivy Cudgel. Ogerpon-W has excellent matchups into Urshifu-R and Kyogre, both of which struggle to deal significant damage to Ogerpon-W while it can threaten them with Horn Leech or Wood Hammer. Horn Leech is used to deal consistent damage while boosting Ogerpon-W's longevity, while Wood Hammer allows Ogerpon-W to OHKO Flutter Mane and Kyogre. Ogerpon-W also matches up well into Calyrex-S and Ursaluna-B after it Terastallizes, threatening to 2HKO Calyrex-S and OHKO Ursaluna-B with Tera Water Ivy Cudgel. The HP and Defense investment allows Ogerpon-W to survive Collision Course in sun from Koraidon, Wood Hammer from Assault Vest Rillaboom, and two High Horsepowers from Calyrex-I after Terastallizing, and it gives it a high chance of surviving two Behemoth Blades from Zacian-C. The HP and Special Defense investment allows Ogerpon-W to survive Astral Barrage from Tera Ghost Choice Specs Calyrex-S, Discharge from Choice Specs Miraidon, and, when Terastallized, Blood Moon from Ursaluna-B; Ogerpon-W also has a high chance of surviving Overheat from Chi-Yu. The Attack investment allows Ogerpon-W to 2HKO Incineroar after Intimidate, and the Speed investment allows Ogerpon-W to outrun Landorus.
Ogerpon-W's redirection makes it an ideal partner for Pokemon that want to set up freely and frail offensive threats that can be KOed easily such as Calm Mind Terapagos and Choice Specs Calyrex-S, respectively. Ogerpon-W survives attacks such as Collision Course from Koraidon and Close Combat from Urshifu-R, which threaten Terapagos, and can redirect Sucker Punch from Chien-Pao, which threatens Calyrex-S. Ogerpon-W also threatens checks to Calyrex-S such as Incineroar and Chi-Yu. Ogerpon-W struggles against Miraidon, Raging Bolt, and Rillaboom, all of which wall and threaten it. Calyrex-I threatens all of these, making it an ideal partner for Ogerpon-W. Ogerpon-W benefits Calyrex-I by threatening Incineroar and redirecting attacks, such as Knock Off and Will-O-Wisp, that hinder Calyrex-I. A partner Incineroar also pairs well with Ogerpon-W, with Incineroar's Intimidate and Ogerpon-W's Embody Aspect working in tandem to make Ogerpon-W difficult to remove. Ogerpon-W supports Incineroar by redirecting attacks that threaten Incineroar such as Surging Strikes from Urshifu-R and Earth Power from Ursaluna-B.
