Tera Type Index: SV OU
stolen from Finchinator

With SV OU evolving into a metagame with seemingly infinite possibilities, teambuilding can be a daunting task while playing around some of the strongest Pokemon can be overwhelming. The goal of this thread is to index many of the commonly seen Terastallization ("Tera") types that Pokemon in SV OU use. This is a curated list, but you can find other common Tera-types in the moveset usage stats. This thread will be left as a locked resource that is periodically updated.

March 1st Update

All Tera-types are changing constantly, but even then, a few changes are so big that they deserve special mentions:

:roaring moon: Fairy - The Tera Fairy set, usually with Tera Blast, was on the rise but it increased even more in popularity in February. Going from 14.5% (1695) and 17.7% (1825) usage to 23.3% (1695) and 30.8% (1825), rising over Tera Ground.

:pecharunt: Dark - As Pecharunt inscreases its dominance, its Tera-types also begin to settle. Tera Dark went from 21.7% (1695) and 29% (1825) usageduring January to 37.5% (1695) and 53.2% (1825) during February. This makes it the preferred Tera-type over Ghost, with other Tera-types like Grass being abandoned.

:Dondozo: - The highest parts of the ladder can look very different. Either cause of quicker adaptation to meta trends, or a player spamming a team. Whatever the case, this can be appreciated with Dondozo this month. While its 1695 Tera-types remained mostly the same, the 1825 data changed A LOT from January to February
January
Tera Types
Dark 32.186%
Fighting 27.240%
Grass 26.241%
Dragon 10.322%
Other 4.011%

February
Tera Types
Dragon 55.238%
Fighting 19.108%
Grass 12.820%
Dark 11.045%
Other 1.789%

Remember you can find all the ladder data in the usage index, though the information in this thread is also curated from stuff observed in tournaments like SPL and OST. See you next month with another update!

April 1st Update

:Roaring Moon: is banned now. During this last month Tera Fairy got enough traction to take the #1 spot among its popular Tera types above Tera Flying and Ground. Tera Ghost also saw an increase in popularity on both bulky and offensive sets. Goodbye Moon.
1695 data
Tera Types
Fairy 28.660%
Flying 26.742%
Ground 22.398%
Ghost 6.529%
Steel 5.067%
Dragon 2.706%
Fire 2.621%
Dark 2.380%
Other 2.898%

1825 data
Tera Types
Fairy 31.264%
Ground 31.039%
Flying 18.446%
Ghost 8.490%
Fire 3.963%
Dark 1.865%
Other 4.932%

:Pecharunt: saw an increase on both Tera Fairy and Fighting, while Tera Ghost and Dark keep sharing the top spots. Tera Fairy has the benefit of being a good defensive typing that isnt weak to Knock Off nor Tera Blast Fairy, unlike Tera Dark, which could help against Roaring Moon. Tera Blast Fighting may be use alongside Tera Blast to hit Dark-types like Kingambit, Ting-Lu, and the now gone Roaring Moon.
1695 data
Tera Types
Ghost 32.166%
Dark 26.467%
Fairy 15.052%
Fighting 12.786%
Flying 3.468%
Grass 3.142%
Ground 2.644%
Other 4.275%

1825 data
Tera Types
Ghost 28.661%
Dark 28.391%
Fairy 17.497%
Fighting 10.709%
Grass 5.288%
Ground 4.770%
Other 4.685%

:Walking Wake: continues to diverge into different items other than Choice Specs, and in turn, Tera-types. KittenLasers Comfey + Whimsicott Sun managed to almost single handedly carry Tera Steel to a 15% usage in 1695, and an outstanding 36% usage in 1825.

:Iron Moth: likewise saw an increase in Tera Fire usage, with a respectable 9% in 1695 which gets almost doubled when you look at 1825, sitting at 18%. Add Tera Fire to a Special Attack boosting Iron Moth in Sun, and now even the likes of Blissey and Ting-Lu are one Fiery Dance boost away from being deleted.

:Gliscor: Tera Normal keeps rising, jumping from 38% to 45% usage in 1695, and from 26% to 46% in 1825. Swords Dance sets keeps proving their value as teams are forced to either pressure it offensively or rely on Iron Defense Corviknight and Skarmory to try to shrug off its hits.

Lets see how the meta adapts to not having to deal with Roaring Moon.

May 1st Update

No drastic changes. But as players experiment with it Tera Ghost Dragonite now shows up. With Tera Blast and Low Kick, this set hits everything at least for neutral, with Tera Ghost providing Dragonite with an immunity to Body Press from the likes of Zamazenta, Corviknight, Dondozo, and Skarmory, which it can then cripple with Encore. It also stops Great Tusk from using Rapid Spin as it might do to get a +1 Speed boost and break Multiscale, as well as removing entry hazards. Time will tell if this set will find a place for itself or if the Tera requirement is too big for it.

:ninetales::Toxapex::Ursaluna::Heatran::Tornadus-Therian: were added. Please let us know if any other Pokemon are relevant enough to be included or if important Tera-types are missing.

June 1st Update

Just changed Tera-types as they fluctuate in popularity. Added a few more Pokemon as well:

:hoopa-unbound::comfey::Excadrill::tyranitar::venusaur::ninetales-alola::rotom-wash::blaziken:

Please feel free to reach out if there is an important Tera-type missing or one that is still included when it should not.

July 1st Update

Changed more Tera-types around. The Pokemon missing are getting more obscure and its hard to get a good idea of what counts as a relevant Tera-type. Nevertheless added a few more

:Indeedee::Iron Boulder::Iron Hands::Latias:

Also added Tera Rock Venusaur and Tera Ground Tornadus-Therian. With Tera Blast, the former targets Dragonite and Moltres, while the latter obtains a Ground immunity while hitting Raging Bolt and Garganacl for super effective damage.

Please reach out if you notice an important Tera is missing or if one is included when it should not be.
