THE AMAZING TALE OF THE MISSING PHOENIX.

Long Time Ago there was a kingdom rule by kind King loved by all his subjects. The king brought peace and prosperity to his kingdom. However, one day, the King changed, their happy and young days were in the past and with the fear of the death, the king became greedy. Obsessed with the eternal life, the King invaded kingdoms, villages, countries in order to find a cure to his old age. One day, a witch told him about a legendary bird, one of fews that could make anyone immortal. With that in his mind, the King sent his three best warriors: The kinght, the hunter and the assassin in order to find the missing bird. The legends were true, protecting the phoenix there was a giant dragon. With their skills, the three champions defeated the dragon and brought the phoenix to his King but the last part of the story was wrong. The bird was unnable to make anyone immortal, the only power he had was to illuminate his kingdom for a eternal happiness. The king accepted his death but with joy an tranquility, assuring that his kingdom always would be happy.

Hi Smogon, my name is Rexxx and I think this is my second RMT in this forum. When I was reading the The Smog of this month I thought about a team with Moltres so I did it, and surprisingly, it works!

TEAMBUILDING.

Hitmonlee_XY.png

Well, I started with this two because the forums recommend a lot Hitmonlee with Moltres, because Hitlee is a crack and kick a lot of asses.

But, when I saw all the whole tier, I thought (Shit, theres is a lot of ghost type, maybe a Knock of user with defog would be better....) So be it! Shiftry was perfect, with defog and very powerfull Knock Off, maybe the most powerfull of the tier... maybe...

Slowking_XY.png

Then I thought: "well, a fire type, a grass type.... Thy not!" WFG core in my team with slowking, the former king of the BW RU king. With Slowking i have a powerfull pivot forming also a powerfull core with Moltres and Shiftry.

Searching about a Pokemon with key ressitence like Rock, dark and poison I found Cobalion, a great sweeper that also can set up Stealth rock, Perfect!

I used to play a lot in RU in BW Meta, and everyone who have played more than 5-6 games knows how good is Druddigon. Druddigon is somehow the glue of my team, giving me key ressitence to fire, water, and electric attacks. Also, Druddigon can set up stealth rock so that my Cobalion can use another move instead Stealth Rock. Also, Druddigon is a good lead.

Finally, my team needed a Revenge killer, a good revenge killer, a nonchoice revenge killer. Looking in the RU tier I was astonished with the fact that Jolteon is RU. Jolteon! That monster that was always a huge threat in BW Meta? Yes! RU! To my team I thought.

I have to said that predictions and momentum are essencials in order to success with this team. The player have to chose very carefull every move and sometimes is better to stay and turn down an item with shiftry and lose the pokemon than change and risk yourseft to lose the momentum. Also you have to know exacty the checks and counters of the team pokemon in order to predict and not lose the momentum.

THE TEAM.

The Phoenix (Moltres) @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Hurricane
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Roost

Moltres is a Nuke with fire wings, very powerfull and very bulky. His Fire Blast can easly turn down everything that doesn't resist it. Hurricane is a resky but also a good move to fighting pokemon, especially if you catch them in change. Usually the enemy would be fear to change into a fighting pokemon in front of moltres. HP Grass is the better option in the moveset because allows moltres to defeat Jellicent or slowking (this is strage) if their are weakened, also works well againts Rhyperior or Seismitoad. Finally, Roost is a good option that synergies perfectly with Life orb, also is a good move to trick the Fucking MBannette and his destiny bond.

120px-Shiftry_XY.webp

The Assassin (Shiftry) @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Defog
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Leaf Storm

Shiftry was a surprise for me because I had never played with it before. Is a good pokemon, fast and strong, not very bulky but the necessary. Defog is one of the rules of this set because thanks Shiftry, Moltres can nuke the enemy team without fears. Shiftry is design to defeat all casual moltres checks and counters with knock Of (OHKO every ghost type non doublade in the tier) and Sucker Punch. With the first, Jellicent is over, and Slowking is 2HKO. With Sucker Punch, Shiftry is allowed to revenge kill faster threat like Jolteon, Rotom, Delphox.... Finally, Leaf Storm, an special move but with a lot of power, OHKO to Alomomola and a huge number non Slowking or Jellicent of water types pokemon. Also is a very usefull move to grounded pokemon like Rhyperior or Seismitoad and thats why is a good offensive lead if you see in the team preview a potentially Seismitoad or Rhyperior lead.

Slowking_XY.png

The King (Slowking) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 240 SpA
Modest Nature
- Scald
- Psyshock
- Fire Blast
- Dragon Tail

Probably the most underrated set for Slowking because he doesn't have any forms of recovery outside regenerator however in this team this set fit like a puzzle piece. He's a pivot, a very offensive pivot with three offensive move and one of utility. Scald is good because is good, can burn and thats good (imagine the face of that shiftry burning before the scald), Psyshock is the first answer of this team to every non knock of user fight type pokemon and poison pokemon of the tier. Fire Blast is for Slowking greatest enemy: Escavalier, also works with Rotom-G, grass types and Durant. Finally Dragon tail, yes, do not laugh please, dragon tail is not a move to kill is a phazing move, is your desperate answer to, for example, Tyrantrum and others sweepers who have stolen the momentum, bringing it back to you.

Cobalion_XY_variocolor.png

The Knight (Cobalion) @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Iron Head

Cobalion is a good Sweeper, with good type, good stats and a good movepool. First Substitute, substitute is a laugh if you have, like I suggested before, the momentum. SubCobalion will laugh in the face of every ghost type non doublade and non bannette because he will hide before the Will o Wisp or the Thunder wave allow him to start a Sweep. Sword dance have good synergy with substitute and is necessary for cobalion to hit strong and make real damage. Close Combate is a good move if the checks and counters of cobalion are out, also have good synergy with substitute. Finally, Iron Head is good for everything that is not affected with Close combat. Beware of Slowking and Jellicent and prepare the double switch to Shiftry if the enemy have one of this two pokemon alives.

Druddigon_XY_variocolor.png

The Dragon (Druddigon) @ Leftovers
Ability: Rough Skin
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 236 HP / 252 Atk / 20 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Dragon Claw
- Sucker Punch
- Fire Punch

Good Pokemon, maybe one of the best pokemon for bulky offense in RU. He can Lead, he can pivot a enemy pokemon, he can put pression. First, Stealth rock, necessary, no words in order to discuss. Dragon claw maybe can be change to Outrage but I prefer Dragon clay because you dont lose the momentum with it. Sucker punch is other good move for Druddigon because he can revenge a lot of pokemon with it. Fire punch, at last, is an acceptable move in order to check steel pokemon. Good lead if you see a potentially ferroseed lead in the preview.

Jolteon_XY.png

The Hunter (Jolteon) @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Signal Beam
- Hidden Power [Water]
- Volt Switch

Jolteon, that OU thunder fox is now RU, huge change. In this tier Jolteon is a real hunter hitting with Volt switch usually like 70%-60% of the life of the enemy pokemon. He can absorb electric types, one of the faws of this team. Thunderbolt is a good late game move, alow him to start a late game sweep . Signal beam is a good move and can be change for Shadow ball if you want. HP Water is necessary because it hits fire types, rock types and ground types, especial mention to Gligar and Rhyperior. Finally volt switch, that move, THAT move is the one who gives the oportunity to Jolteon to lead 60% of the games.

Well, and thats all, I hope you like all the team and I look forward your comments about it. Thanks Smogon to teaching me about playing pokemon and all the stuff.

Chao.

The Knight (Cobalion) @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

- Close Combat

The Assassin (Shiftry) @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Defog
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Leaf Storm

The Hunter (Jolteon) @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Hey dude, this is a pretty solid team here, but there are two Pokemon that i believe are very very threatening to you at the moment.

Virizion is a *HUGE* threat to your team at large. It OHKOs your entire team at +2, outspeeds everything except for Cobalion and Jolteon (the former of which still has a 50% chance to get outsped and the latter of which can't really hurt Virizion), and it gets at least one easy opportunity to set up on Shiftry (it it gets in on anything except Volt Switch on Jolteon it can set up there too). You'll definitely have to find a way to easily deal with this thing.

Hitmonlee is a pain in the ass for your team, although its at least a bit more manageable than Virizion. If it switches in on any of the Pokemon on your team that are slower than it (Slowking, Druddigon), you're faced with an absolute nuke that smashes through your entire team with High Jump Kick alone, not even Slowking can take it!. You're pretty much forced to sacrifice something to Hitmonlee to try and revenge kill it with either Cobalion, Jolteon, or Moltres, but if any of them take a certain amount of damage Hitmonlee can just pick them off with Mach Punch. Be careful around it.

EDIT: Thought of some ideas on how you could deal with Virizion, you could try just one of these suggestions, or try and mix up multiple together if you want :o

you could try using Doublade>Cobalion. Doublade is a great check to both Virizion and Hitmonlee, and just like Cobalion it makes for a great late game sweeper that's quite easy to set up thanks to its typing and bulk. It keeps up the naming theme too! Keep in mind that you lose a lot of Speed and exchange your resistance to Knock Off for a weakness to it though.

Doublade @ Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Shadow Claw
- Shadow Sneak

you could try running a Physically defensive Druddigon set. Adding some defense on Druddigon will let you take on Virizion a bit better, instead of being straight up OHKOed by +2 Lum Close Combat after rocks, you'll be able to take one pretty easily and strike back with either a Dragon-type move or say Fire Punch in return for the KO. Rough Skin+Rocky Helmet is a great way to punish Virizion (and other physical attackers that could threaten you such as Fletchinder) too, even if you don't end up outright beating it because of prior damage or an extra Justified boost. Outside of just beating Virizion, the Paralysis support that Druddigon can give with Glare works quite well with Moltres and Cobalion.

Druddigon @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Glare
- Dragon Tail
- Fire Punch

You could try Durant>Cobalion. Durant is another threatening fast Steel-type sweeper that exists in the RU tier. However, unlike Cobalion it's capable of reliably revenge killing Virizion instead of needing to win a Speed tie to do so, it can also switch into any of unboosted Virizion's attacks just once if need be. Only taking neutral damage from Hitmonlee's Mach Punch is a pretty big plus too. You lose the ability to absorb Knock Off well though =/.

Durant @ Lum Berry / Life Orb
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hone Claws
- Iron Head
- Crunch (Doublade coverage, you can run X-Scissor here if you want i guess)
- Superpower

Lastly, you could try a Choice Scarf Moltres. Scarf Moltres gives you a pretty good check to Virizion, You can revenge kill it pretty reliably with any of Moltres's STAB moves and are capable of switching into both of Virizion's STAB moves quite easily if need be (watch out for Stone Edge!). I'm not sure if you'd want to do this though considering how valuable Life Orb Moltres can be against slower, more defensive teams.

Moltres @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Hurricane
- Flamethrower
- U-turn

hope i helped!
