SV OU The Big Comeback

The Big Comeback
An SV OU Team by andreds

Introduction:

Hey, everyone! This will be my first RMT in over a decade (you can find the last RMT here:
https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/open-the-floodgates.3473439/).

I am itching to get back into building competitive teams and battling. Looking forward to any and all advice that I receive. It's been a long time!

(Full disclaimer: This team was completed very early on in the Scarlet and Violet meta, so one Pokemon no longer belongs here. But for the sake of not leaving my team at 5 mons or replacing it with something random, I'll leave it for now so you all can see how this team works together and then I'll build the proper replacement).

Here we go!

The Team

=======================================

Gholdengo.jpeg

Artist: https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/4075473

Gholdengo @ Air Baloon
Ability: Good as Gold
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 SpA/ 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Make It Rain
- Shadow Ball
- Nasty Plot
- Recover

The star of the show and who I wanted to build the team around. I know the choice item Dengos are pretty popular, but I like the idea of Air Baloon and being able to switch in on threats like Iron Threads. I also went with Tera Flying for a better matchup against Great Tusk, and that looks to be a good choice since Tusk is sitting at the top tier in OU. Though I do think Gholdengo (and the other Pokemon below as I go along), could benefit better from a tera type and item change because of how things are looking Post-HOME.

=======================================

Garchomp.jpeg

Artist: https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/1922055

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP/ 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Tera Type: Steel
- Dragon Tail
- Earthquake
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock

Garchomp was pretty much a given for my second choice, as I knew he worked well with Gholdengo in doubles. But in singles as well, he's a solid tank who can set up multiple hazards. Someone tries to bring out a hazard remover, bring Gholdengo back out hopefully if the matchup is better, and prevent them from being removed. Or keep Garchomp in if he can handle and punish them. I like Tera Steel in situations where I have to check Dragapult. Not to mention it's so helpful defensively.

=======================================

Breloom.jpeg

Artist: https://www.deviantart.com/antidarkheart

Breloom @ Focus Sash
Ability: Technician
Evs: 252 Atk/ 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Tera Type: Fighting
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Bulldoze
- Spore

11 years later and Breloom is on my team yet again. Like Garchomp, another strong lead. Can slow plans down with Spore and give Gholdengo a chance to set up. Bullet seed being awesome to hit some heavy hitters like Garganacl and Dondozo. I trust in Mach Punch on its own or in addition to the Fighting Tera type to omit a move like Close Combat and go for Bulldoze for coverage.

=======================================

Rotom W.jpeg

Artist: https://www.deviantart.com/neslug/gallery

Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
- Will-O-Wisp

Rotom is pretty versatile. My biggest question right now is if a standard physical defensive set works best for this team over the Choice Scarf set. The move Trick (though I don't find myself using it often) can turn the tide in battle if I find the opportunity to use it. Will-O-Wisp to cripple physical threats. There's not much else to say as Rotom-Wash's moveset has not really changed much. Love this guy.

=======================================

flutter_mane_shiny_by_angelrosestar_dfj01b8-414w.jpeg

Artist: https://www.deviantart.com/angelrosestar/gallery

Flutter Mane @ Choice Specs
Ability: Protosynthesis
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Tera Type: Ghost
- Shadow Ball
- Moonblast
- Mystical Fire
- Psyshock

We've arrived at the reason for my disclaimer in my intro. We know what this thing can do. I'll leave it at that. But now that it's been banned for quite some time, my goal here now is to replace it with a Pokemon that can play a similar role, without sacrificing too much power or messing up this team's synergy.

=======================================

Garganacl.jpeg

Artist: https://twitter.com/ariga_megamix

Garganacl @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def/ 252 SpD
Careful Nature
Tera Type: Water
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Salt Cure
- Recover

And last but not least, I bring you Garganacl. I'll be honest, I did not expect to have it on my team (never been one to confidently use a rock type), but its ability and moveset are a blast to use. My second set-up sweeper, the Iron Defense and Body Press combo is something else. The Tera Water type is my favorite to check Gholdengo's, the occasional Scizor, and being able to switch into Cinderace's.

=======================================

Final Thoughts:

If you've made it to the end, I truly appreciate it. Upon building this squad, there were a couple of Pokemon that were waiting in the wings but didn't make the cut (Mimikyu and Iron Wings).

I got to take a look at the SV OU Post-Home Viability Ranking Thread and it's crazy to see how much the meta has changed. This team might not end up looking the same in the end because of that, but as of now, it is one with good resistance and no more than two shared weaknesses between any of my Pokemon. A big thank you in advance to all who help.

I've never seen, or thought of, defensive scarf Rotom. It does lose the scarf sometimes, so that makes sense, it just is new to me. Different metas for us but same principles apply...how has it done? Do you think a regular fast scarf would be bad(even w/ same moves?) Or what about regular tank?

Thanks for mentioning this, because I realize that not only have I made a blunder with Rotom's EVs, but based on the moveset and item I chose, it should be Timid as well! I could do one of two things from here: Fix the EVs and switch it to Timid OR update the EVs so that it can be a proper defensive set, give it leftovers and switch Trick to Protect. I know both are viable.

well i am being tracked for team rater... idk what direction you want me to go in. should i update the team for todays meta? (also if i where to change things i feel like it wouldn't be the same team.)

Yes! I’m definitely curious to see what the team team would look like updated for today’s meta. I’m aware it might not exactly be the same team by the end haha

I guess my only small hope is that my team doesn’t need to use any legends (Paradox pkmn are okay). But we’ll see!

Heya! Sorry the the long time it took for me to rate this. This is going to be a BIG overhaul to fit in the new metagame. I'm going to link all the changes at the bottom with a completely updated team. (Also I didn't really know how to format this so excuse the messiness.

Changes:

Swap :garchomp: for :ting-lu:. Ting-Lu offers much more bulk than Garchomp which enables it to swap in multiple games a match to tank a hit or set hazards. I say run the standard set (pretty much the only thing that Ting-Lu that runs.) Tera ghost on it so that it can spinblock if Gholdengo is down. It looses some offensive power that Garchomp brings but the added bulk compensates for that.

Swap :breloom: for :meowscarada:. Breloom's life is pretty tough in the OU metagame as there are so many things that outspeed it and kill it or wall it completely. I swap it out for Meowscarada as it offers a higher speed tier and also knock-off support. This is really helpful if you need to get rid of boots that counter your hazard stacking strategy. I'm running a scarf moveset as the added speed helps alot (eg. you now outpseed :Dragapult:). You could run boots on Meowscarada as this team has no hazard removal but I think the added speed on Meowscarada is really good. For Scarf Meow, you can run alot of moves in the first slot so i'm going to give you options. Thunder Punch hits flying types like Enamorus which normally wall Meowscarada, Low Kick for Steels like :heatran: and :kingambit:. Catches them off guard if they swap them in blindly thinking it walls Meowscarada or you could run Play Rough for fairy weaks like :iron-valiant: and :dragonite:. All moves have their uses but the one i recommend is Thunder Punch.

Swap :Flutter-mane: for :iron-valiant:. Flutter Mane was banned for being too OP so the replacement is Iron-Valiant. I was going to choose :choice-scarf: Enamorus but the natural speed of Iron Valiant + the :choice-specs: item on Iron-Valiant + the coverage moves that it gets fully convince me to choose Iron-Valiant. This thing rips apart weakened teams and also is much better vs Kingambit. While it can't eat a hit, its 4x resistance to dark type moves like Sucker-Punch means that you can be confident that Kingambit won't be able to blow past your teams.

Swap :garganacl:for :moltres: When looking at your team, all of your defensive walls are weak to grass type moves. Adding Moltres helps with this as it resists grass moves 4x and offers alot that Garganacl doesn't. While you do loose salt-cure, you are now able to punish contact moves with Flame-Body like U-Turn. Its higher speed tier than Garganacl allows too outspeed :kingambit: and get a burn off. This mon fits really well with the core you already have.

Set Changes:

Swap Goldengo's :Air-Balloon: set for a more defensive set. I'm not changing any moves, just the Evs, Item and Tera type. The set I'm giving you makes Goldengo as Phys bulky as possible (max hp and def) but enough speed to outspeed max speed :kingambit:. Swap its Air Balloon for a :covert-cloak:. Air Balloon is not needed as you already have :rotom-wash: levitating + Air Balloon doesn't do anything if the :great-tusk: has knock-off (It very commonly has it.). Covert Cloak makes Gholdengo a consistent check to :garganacl: and :zamazenta:(wow) and more. Because secondary effects like defence drops and salt-cure don't happen which is far better mileage for an item. Swap Tera type of Flying for Fairy as that serves as a solid defensive type by itself and is a Dark resist.

Swap whatever you here running on :rotom-wash: for a specially defensive set. Spd Rotom works way better on this team with the combo of walls that you have on this team. I'm running T-wave over Wisp as :moltres: is now our wisper and double status is good for different types of attackers. (wisp for phys attackers and T-wave for spa.) Pretty standard set.

Notes:

There is no hazard removal on this team. You have to play very smart as the longer the match takes, the more your pokemon are going to be chipped down. You could swap :meowscarada: for :cinderace: as it offers hazard removal (provided there are no hazards on the opponent's team) and also gives counterplay to screens. The downside to this is that it doesn't get knock-off which means that :heavy-duty-boots: just ignore those hazards you setup as there is no item removal and also a slower pokemon. Set for Cinderace is below if you wanna swap Meowscarada out.

Cinderace @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pyro Ball
- U-turn
- Low Kick
- Court Change

Thats All! Hope you enjoy your *new* team. Go get em! :boi:

This was absolutely incredible, waytoopetty! I'm thankful for the amount of attention you put into this. Even with all the changes, the goal of the team remained the same and Gholdengo got to stay haha. Kind of had a feeling that Breloom would be gone though.

I'd say my favorite swap from the changes would be going from Flutter Mane to Iron Valiant. I've been wanting to use Valiant for a good while. While the biggest surprise (and biggest fix), was Moltres to help with the grass weakness for my defensive types. Might consider the Cinderace switch, but I feel like I can take the gamble of not having hazard removal.

(P.S. -I enjoyed the cat name theme ha)

Hey, I was not going to rate this since waytoopretty already did, but since you wanted my opinion on the matter, I guess its only my duty to give it an honest shot

Big changes:

:flutter mane: ------> :iron valiant:

first thing we need is strong fairy type, valiant it is

Iron Valiant @ Choice Specs
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 SpA / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Psyshock
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt / Aura Sphere

haha specs valiant strong, 8 SpD allows you to survive a shadow ball from specs pult, which is neat. Outside of that, only thing to consider is either thunderbolt or aura sphere, tbolt zaps waters and birds, aura sphere slams heatran, which otherwise walls you forever

:garchomp: -------> :ting lu:

Ting-Lu @ Leftovers
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Spikes
- Earthquake
- Whirlwind
- Ruination

I like chomp, but ting lu fits better in my opinion, and partners well with gholdengo, this is just the standard set, and tera poison is to flip the water, fairy, fighting, bug and grass matchups

:breloom: ----------> :great tusk:

Great Tusk @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Atk / 160 Def / 80 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off
- Rapid Spin

The RMT staff has a rule that says, and I quote

  1. Avoid drastically changing the original team. We strongly recommend changing no more than 3 members of the original team so long as those changes have sufficient explanations.
And even tho it is a "strong recommendation" it exists there for keeping the identity of the team, so with that said, the last change goes to hazard machine tusk, this is my personal bread and butter set, 16 Atk ensures a 50% chance to OHKO offensive Gholdengo with EQ, 80 speed hits 230, which is a good catch-all speed tiers, especially after rapid spin. You need a way to remove hazards and a check to bax and gambit

Small changes:

:Gholdengo: tera is going to be changed to water, trust me, It's so fucking good for the fire, water, ghost and ground matchup

here is the new version of the team
https://pokepast.es/0f2c1541b2ede66f
I hope you like this version, and you find some level of success with it

Thank you so much, 1LDK! I really appreciate your take on the team as well. One thing I noticed is the consistency in who needed to be changed: Flutter Mane to Iron Valiant (obviously lol), Garchomp to Ting-Lu, and switching out Breloom, of course. I like how you and waytoopetty agreed on that.

I think having that 8 SpD on Iron Valiant will be a big help. Another gem is being able to have hazard removal and Ting-Lu being able to have Ruination since Tusk is running Stealth Rock duties.

I have a small question about Tera Types (and waytoopetty you can chime in too): How do we know which will benefit more? For example, you both gave me different Tera Types for Gholdengo (then again, it is one of the most versatile when it comes to that). Ting is also another (with Ghost and Poison being the most popular).

Once again, thank you both for your help! It will be a blast to put everything to the test.

The simple answer is to keep playing and experimenting, idk about him, but I went with water and poison because I value those more, whatever is more comfortable with your strategy, maybe you want to lure something specific like dark moves and that's why fairy is more appealing

That’s great advice, thank you! Been tinkering with them and finding success with all. One last question for you both: When creating a team how big of a concern are team weaknesses for you? Or do they not matter as much if a team clicks enough together.

waytoopetty, your changes has three of my pkmn weak to Fairy, but I did notice that four of their tera types are Fairy so that helps with that.

And, 1LDK with yours three are weak to water and grass and four are weak to fairy.

EDIT: Aaaand, I just answered my own question lol. The tera poison for Ting makes a lot more sense now.

I’ve just been so used to using Tera offensively for the most part, that I had no idea how clutch it can be to use them defensively

Provided you are using both of our changes, Moltres solves your problem with resisting Fairy AND Grass without a tera. And also you shouldn't really be switching in fairy moves like Moonblast from :enamorus: with things like Meowscarada. Also you have Gholdengo as a second fairy resist.

I realize I made a mishap and made :rotom-wash:'s tera Fairy. Change it to Steel.

Also, things like weaknesses of the team (eg hazards) you can play around them. Like if i knew :garchomp: was switching in to setup hazards, you can predict this by switching into something that is strong vs Garchomp (eg. :Iron-valiant:). Forcing it out. Also, If you want to mix and match our changes, I would def recommend the Tusk swap as that eases the weakness of hazards on your team. Although, the opponent can also play around your Tusk ;).
