The forgotten sweeper of gen 4...(Peaked 401)

gyarados_by_soadpedro.jpg

HAI THUR.

This is a team which is basically started off as an anti-metagame team which i built around picking pokemon which countered most of the top used pokemon in OU, and in the building process it led me to using my favorite pokemon; a valued sweeper in gen 4 which for some strange reason got forgotten about in gen 5: Gyarados. It's popularity is finally starting to rise again but it doesn't get enough use as it should do. This team reached 401 on PO server without a GREAT DEAL of thought going into the team, which is why i'm posting it on here, with a little help and common sense i'm open to suggestions for replacements in a few of my pokemon. But anyway it reached 401 for... basically one reason.... Gyarados, and here's how:

I started off the team building process with two things in mind: the current metagame's state, weather, and the predictability of battles these days. So i started off picking pokemon that 1) Oppose/Abuse weather and 2) Are unpredictable, as i believe prediction is basically what wins you a game.

Tested Gliscor>Mamoswine reached a new peak of 228 on PO

Sooo, weather counters, Tyranitar? i thought fighting, Politoed? i thought grass, Ferrothorn is the no1 used pokemon in OU so also needs a counter, I went with Virizon, predictable? I went with a swords dance set.

Never looked back after picking him, i used to use celebi, but was getting more used in OU so needed something less predictable. Next, i wanted another Strong physical sweeper without the weakness to fire... So here it somes... Gyarados, how i've missed you.

With the set i'm using with gyarados, rain support would be great for it, so out comes Kyogr- jokes.

I noticed it was a bit offensive, so i went with the number 1 poke in OU... (how predictable) :( but it does the job of walling... Ferrothorn

Done this in a wierd order, wasn't my total thought process so i'll throw in the other two now rather than BSing

So there you have it, could you believe that team could reach 401? i wouldn't have thought it tbh. But itsss lesss perredictabblee!

So here are the movesets in case you were wondering...

I will expand on my descriptions shortly, I just have things to do

tumblr_lf1yrsY3Ow1qc2z44o1_500.png

Toad@choice scarf
Drizzle, Modest Nature
252spe/252Spa/4hp
  • hydro pump
  • hidden power [grass]
  • ice beam
  • perish song

Spartacus, bringer of rain. Basically what this guy is here for, now excadrill is banned rain is far more superior, It helps out gyarados by powering up its water moves, helps jolteon get an accurate thunder and helps ferrothorn out with fire attacks. Hydro pump in the rain is not to be reckoned with, i think choice scarfed toed is the most superior and goes better on this team than the defensive set. ice beam for dragons + better coverage, hidden power grass says fuck you gastrodon/quagsire/swampert on the switch. Perish song was more of a filler but is tons usedul against baton passing teams and pokemon attempting to set up such as reuniclus.

tumblr_lf37zzmRvU1qa9irao1_500.png

Thorn@ Rocky helmet
Iron barbs, Sassy nature
252hp/28def/228Spd [0speed IV's]
  • spikes
  • power whip
  • gyro ball
  • stealth rock

Well, It's no wonder ferrothorn is the number one most used pokemon in OU at the moment, its walling capabilities are endless, while having the ability to set up hazards as well and some pretty decent STAB moves make it an all round decent pokemon, but i don't need to tell you that, you know why it's good... now the moveset is a bit odd but i can explain: Obviously spikes is helpful in getting my beautiful gyarados to sweep while breaking sashes etc etc, power whip is a great move on ferrothorn because it is good against MOST of the spinners in OU barring forretress, which is also why i have it holding rocky helmet, if it rapid spins, 25% damage done to you and they will think twice about spinning again. Gyro ball wrecks dragons and is my main answer to haxorus once it gets a dragon dance up, while also messing up hail teams, and curse, well... just to make it unpredictable :/ i should really change it though...

virizion_pokemon_comm_example_by_blackninja63-d40zajk.jpg

Virizon@ leftovers
Justified, jolly nature/naive nature
252atk/252spe/4hp
  • swords dance
  • leaf blade
  • close combat
  • stone edge/Hidden power ice

I really get excited about using virizon. It is my main answer to both politoed and tyranitar, while it is also able to counter ferrothorn and rotom-W. It can come in on toed any day of the week and set up a swords dance on the switch, it has great speed and DUAL stab with decent coverage make it a beastly Anti-metagame pokemon and especially wrecks late game. People for one: expect the calm mind set, only to be surprised (the best part is when they switch in to a blissey or something) and able to set up again or just wreck the pokemon that switched out, it also has great synergy with the rest of the team and just works really well. I never rated virizon until i started using it and now i cant get enough. EV's and nature self explanatory. Hidden power ice and naive nature is in testing to give it that little extra surprise edge against gliscor, thanks to Anti metagame for suggesting this. (In testing)

Delta_Species_Jolteon_by_Sareii.png

Jolteon@ Life orb
volt absorb, Timid nature
252spa/252spe/4hp
  • substitute
  • baton pass
  • thunder
  • hidden power (ice)

Another unpredictable little pest. "Oh he's sent in jolteon" He'll attack next turn" nope! i'll set up a substitute and kill the switch in if i can 2HKO it or just baton pass a substitute onto virizon or gyarados, If i think the switch in is using earthquake, i'll BP onto gyarados and it's pretty much GG. STAB thunder in the rain is deadly especially with jolteons speed, the 30% chance of paralysis is also always good. HP ice is for gliscor, i have no idea why so many gliscors choose to stay in and take the HP ice it boggles the mind... It is obviously a great partner for gyarados due to volt absorb, on the switch i can sub and BP back off to gyarados etc etc it really works great with gyarados.

9408958_611520.png

Gliscorrrr@toxic orb
Poison heal,impish nature
252hp/184def/78spe
  • toxic
  • earthquake
  • ice fang
  • protect
Mamoswine used to be here, because it could OHKO dragonite with icicle crash, gliscor did a better job though and put the team up to 218 on PO server from 484 or whatever it was. I like this set because it's a little different, toxic is always helpful as i can poison rotom-w on the switch, gliscors walling capabilities also help me defend against Terrakion, which appeared to be a major weakness in my team and even with gliscor has caused me some trouble. But, gliscor is one of my favorites and needs no description on what it can do.

496615.jpg

SCARFMOXIEDOS@ Choice Scarf
Moxie, Adamant nature
252atk/252spe/4hp
  • waterfall
  • earthquake
  • stone edge
  • ice fang

Just look at that thing. ^^^ The mon of the moment Scarf moxie dos is a fantastic revenge killer with STAB waterfall in the RAIN with MAX ATTACK and nobody expects it to be fast so stay in only to realise its holding a SCARF. Revenge kill = +1 attack, and then the fun begins, forces so many rage quite its unreal, but some people argue it's difficult to pull off a sweep with gyarados but i disagree. With the team preview at the start i take my time and see what pokemon are left, i attempt to wipe out any that will resist gyarados' waterfall, send it in and sweep. Prediction is the way to win and using unpredictable mos and sets like this is what has won me most of my battles. Gyarados was a crazy immense sweeper in gen 4 and is totally disregarded in gen 5 despite it gaining the ability MOXIE. I'm using it to make people wake up and realise what they re missing out on, and because it rocks.

Conclusion: This team needs a little work purely because i didn't think it through as much as my last team (stall). But it HAS reach 228 on PO server, i'm gonna run it through on the smogon server see how well it does on there without any excadrills running around. I'm open to many suggestions of replacing pokemon such as mam. But my general rule of thumb when playing with this team is: LOOK AT THEIR TEAM PREVIEW, KILL THINGS THAT RESIST WATERFALL OR THAT MAY BE A PROBLEM FOR GYARADOS. Send him in and sweep.

yeah, lol bear with me i clicked post by accident and have to sort it out now :@

EDIT: ok sorted it out now, feel free to rate, i'll expand my decriptions shortly but i have things to do.

Scarfed Terrakion can be a threat because it can totally destroy every single pokemon in your team. You need Dragonites power, it takes every attack pointed at him except
stone edge, anti lead dragonite is deadly because it stops all threats takes out Ferro wwith a 4x weak fire punch.

Gliscor can be a Dragonite counter if you find some causing you problems.

Dragonite @lum berry
Ability: Multi Scale
Evs: 252 atk/ 4Spdef/ 252 Speed
Adamant nature [ + Attack -Special Attack]
- Fire Punxh
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

Good luck!

Choice scarfed Terrakion eh? They seem quite rare, if i ever see terrakion its usually a rock polish, SD set or CB, never seen a scarfed one before, nevertheless if it does come along i'm totally buggered. I like the dragonite and gliscor suggestion, although i usually lead off with politoed to set rain up unless they other guy has tyranitar i save him, so D-nites fire punch will be a little counter-productive for my liking.

I like the gliscor idea though, which should counter both terrakion and d-nite, if i replace mamo i could then swap SR over to ferrothorn so i might give that a go.

Thanks for the advice :)

Cool team, but I feel you can abuse the rain more. A couple nitpicks first.

You already made a big hype about using Virizion, so you can drop Power Whip on ferro (water types will generally not stay in ferro anyway) for Leech Seed. I also don't like Curse much since you're already so offensive. Try Thunder Wave to hax your opponent and make Jolteon's sub passing job easier.

For Virizion, you can be even more unexpected by making him Naive and using HP Ice.Gliscor is currently the only clear cut counter to physical Virizion I can think of and it totally can surprise people, perfect for your current uses of your team.

For Politoed, I suggest a Timid Nature with the scarf. There's no need to die by tying with other Politoed if the situation ever happens.

You want Stealth Rock somewhere, opposing DD nites can be a pain.

Ok, so that's my nitpicks, here's the threats. The best threat I can think of is Specs Rotom. Quite literally, a Specs Hydro Pump beats up everything you have. For example, your all around tank ferro, takes 38% - 46% on every switch-in. Throw in some spikes and hazards and Ferro is 2HKOd while the rest of your team follows. Since ferro has no recovery outside of leftovers, I strongly suggest that Leech Seed.

I can't think of much more. Cool team and good luck!

Yo mate. Not a bad overall team idea here, but I think there is a lot of small things that can be added that will overall just boost the team up a lot. First off put Timid as the nature of your Politoed, you're using scarf, thus not running Timid nature is defeating the purpose of trying to reach a high speed number with Politoed. Next off, it's definitely worth considering Life Orb over Expert Belt with Jolteon, you're only running two attack moves anyway, so the the coverage is lacking optimal chances to even collect the boost, where as jolteon is fast and frail too not be taking hits anyway, Life Orb recoil wouldn't be overly problematic. Put Stealth Rock over Curse on Ferrothorn. Curse is doing barely anything for you, where as Stealth Rock is invaluable for most teams, also add Leftovers over Rocky Helmet to add to longevity since you'll be running both hazards and have no other way of healing without a wish passer on the team. The last thing I'd like to suggest is a different Gyarados set, Substitute + Dragon Dance set will work really well for your team, especially since you're already running subpass Jolteon support anyway, one of DD gyarados' best partners. Here is the set of you're willing to give it a shot:

Gyarados @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Nature @ Adamant
EVs: 252atk / 4 Defense / 252 speed
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Substitute
-Bounce / Stone Edge

Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your suggestions, just like to say i forgot to edit the post and ferrothorn is running stealth rock over curse, apoligies.

Secondly i think i'll still run rocky helmet over leftovers purely because i have no spin blocker, it has proven useful against physical attacks as well, but i will of course test it to see if it gets me any higher.

Thirdly, i love the hyarados set suggested to me, except the whole reason this team has worked is the surprise kill that scarfmoxiedos can get, and sweep. The DD set is too predictable and its predictions which win games IMO as mentioned in my post.

However i'll definately try life orb out on jolteon for more power, seems like a sensible suggestion since it can't take a hit anyway and so hp isnt a problem.

Timid seems to be the usual choice on politoed, i'll test it out, but if i'm outsped by another politoed i'm not too worried about losing him since rain will be up anyway, also with modest nature it does around 55% to gastrodon with hidden power grass on the switch, and i can 2HK0 it, wheres with timid it can recover away without much problem, sort of making it have hidden power grass pointless.

The hidden power [ice] suggestion is very interesting on virizon! definately give that a go, i have usually used stone edge for dragonite so HP ice is more reliable and unpredictable i guess.

Hello Coughing,

Nice idea building around Gyarados@Moxie, it's a really underrated Pokémon in this Metagame and it works particulary well, look at how BIHI reach the top of the ladder with a ScarfGyarados Team. But as previous said, there is a few things which can be add.

First, when building around Gyarados, you need a Spinner of course. Second thing, Pokémon which Gyarados has trouble with, such as Jellicent, Gastrodon, etc... you have to eliminate them. Something like Forretress or Tentacruel can work particulary well with Gyarados because both can Spin and Set up the Toxic Spikes, really important.

073.gif

Tentacruel (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 208 Def / 4 SDef / 44 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Toxic Spikes
- Protect
- Rapid Spin

205.gif

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Spikes / VoltSwitch
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic Spikes

To be honest, if you're running for Tentacruel, use it instead of Virizion, because you already have Ferrothorn as Bulky Grass, and Virizion hasn't nothing to do there. If you're running for Forretress, use it instead of Ferrothorn, because both can't work together and you have Virizion as Bulky Grass. To be honest, I'll run Tentacruel which is better paired with Ferrothorn.

Now, you need something to lure in Jellicent, Gastrodon, Ferrothorn, etc... Scizor is a great Gyarados partner there and can Spam U-Turn as it wants against Gastrodon, Ferrothorn and Jellicent (easy with T-Spikes you see ?). Use that =>

212.gif

Scizor (M) @ Choice Band / Occa Berry
Trait: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit

Why Occa Berry ? Because Celebi, even under Rain it can be dangerous, but to be honest, with Rain + T-Spikes + Stealth Rock + Spikes it can't counter Gyarados, but watch out.

Now last thing, Jolteon can work but now I'm thinking about that, Virizion and Celebi are really dangerous, and it's why Latios works well here. In addition, Latios has a lot of resistances and it's perfect for the Team, and it attracts Ferrothorn, Gastrodon and sometimes Jellicent.

381.gif

Latios (M) @ Life Orb / Expert Belt
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Psyshock
- Recover

Latios is a good Rotom-W check and that helps the Team, because Jolteon can't take an Hydropump... For the Dragonite problem, with Rain + Ferrothorn + Scizor I think it's ok. Now change your Politoed for a Choice Specs Modest or a Scarf Timid (not Modest...)

Well, GL with this Team dude !

Thanks for the rate! very insightful.

I love that you suggested tentacruel, that set is beast in the rain i used it on my rain stall team. However replacing virizon will hurt, its so fun to use, and it kind of ruins my team on the prediction side of things but i can understand the change; at least my gyarados is somewhat unperdictable.

If i used tentacruel i would most likely also have to run scizor to counter tyranitar a bit better, and having thought about it specs/scarf latios has given me a little irritance on my team, scizor could counter that too, its just a question of who could replace scizor.

Rotom-W is another small problem especially with scarf, and latios solves it.

Thanks for the help, you've left me with a huge dilemma lol which i'll have to figure out but yeah thanks for your time.
