The Great NU Sunny Day Team

Hey all of Smogon! This is my first RMT post and my first weather team. I thought the abilities that Sunny Day abilities looked cool so I made one. I've used it a little and it does okay, but I'd like it to do better so please give constructive criticism.Changes in bold.

Team Building Process

Okay so I was looking through the NU tier and saw a Sunny Day team waiting to happen. I wanted to start with an odd lead that could start Sunny Day and hold off an attack from the opposing forces. The absolutely unnatural choice of course would be none other than SLOWKING!
sprite.php

Then I wanted a fire type to get the 50% attack boost plus a STAB attack. After remembering my favorite poke of the second generation my natural choice was TYPHLOSION!

157.png

Next I wanted a to abuse a Chlorophyll boost and a STAB Solar Beam. A strong poke that I saw near the list of Typhlosion was Victreebel. Hey lets try this one!

157.png

I started to realize Slowking wasn't the best choice for the job of leading the sun. I then chose to get a basic yet fast sun starter. Hmmm... *Thinking hard* HEY how about a cute fluffy puffball! JUMPLUFF!

The last two slots I had no idea what else to do. All I knew was I wanted a stealth rocker. I explored for awhile to see what I could come up with. I didn't realize Gligar made it up still in NU. I thought I would try it out for awhile.

Now I really didn't know what else to use except I needed a physical sweeper so I just went with a basic fast hard-hitting poke. I chose a simple easy Tauros. This is VERY subject to change. He was just a filler.

Recently suggested, I changed Gligar to Regirock because of greater defences, easier sun set up, and COMPLETE AWESOMENESS

After recent suggestions, I have switched Regirock to the lead and Jumpluff to a later game sun set up.

The In-depth Look

pokemon_regirockSprite.gif

Regirock @ Heat Rock
Clearbody
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpDef
- Sunny Day
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Explosion

Regirock is great and I think it works much better than Gligar. Now that I switched him to the lead, he sets up sun and rocks. Then he has 3 choices. Switch, Stone Edge, or Explode. Depending on what they have will tell me what I'm doing. Just a matter of opinion to tell me what I'm doing.

157.png

Typhlosion @ Choice Scarf
Blaze
Nature: Modest
Evs: 252 Spe / 252 SpAtk / 4 SpDef
- Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Solar Beam

Okay I love Typhlosion, and I always have loved him. I chose to use a EV spread of 252 speed and 252 special attack to out speed and out strength other pokemon. If my HP goes below 262 then Fire Blast becomes stronger than Eruption. They are my main attacks because a neutral with them is like a x2 attack! Focus Blast and Solar Beam are for coverage. Scarf allows me to outspeed most everything. Things for change? I'd like to keep Typhlosion itself in, but i could use some advice on moves or items.

victreebel.png

Victreebel @ Life Orb
Chlorophyll
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Spe / 252 SpAtk
- Solar Beam
- Sludge Bomb
- Weather Ball
- Sleep Powder

This guy is great in the sun. Doubling his speed and making Solar Beam instant makes him a powerful sweeper. I have to act quickly though or LO will finish me before they do. Solar Beam is my main STAB and a Sludge Bomb STAB to handle other grass types. Weather Ball is great. Thanks for suggesting it, Darkamber.. Toxic to hurt some bulky walls. I don't think there's much to change about him but if you think so let me know.

sprite.php

Slowking @ Heat Rock
Own Tempo
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpDef
- Sunny Day
- Slack Off
- Grass Knot
- Psychic

Like I said at the beginning, I wanted a weird sun set up. This guy double functions as a mixed wall which I find great. I honestly don't know why this guy is in NU. Sunny Day for the most obvious reasons. Slack Off gets me a longer survivability. Psychic for a strong STAB. When I'm fighting a rain team Grass Knot can really help out by killing their bulky water. The EV spread is to survive attacks from all types of pokemon.

sprite.php

Jumpluff @ Heat Rock
Chlorphyll
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpDef / 252 Spe
- Sleep Powder
- Sunny Day
- U-turn
- Aromatherapy

This is the almost basic set of Jumpluff. With a little EV changes it kind of become my own. His job is fairly simple. Sleep the other poke, bring out the sun, and U-turn out. The EV spread is like this to out speed when I U-turn, do damage when I do and possibility to survive a weak lead. The last move I had no clue about. Thanks to a suggestion I changed Endure to Memento to Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy help with those dang statuses Other than that I think this set is pretty sound. Unless Sleep Powder misses I'm good.

sprite.php

Tauros @ Life Orb
Intimate
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Return
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

Tauros is pretty good for a filler. A Life Orb, STAB Returns are a strong attacks to kill all but rocks and steels. Next Earthquake will cover them rocks and steels. Stone Edge is just another coverage move. Finally, Pursuit helps deal with Psychics and Ghosts. They learn not to mess with the bull! Like I said still not to sure about him. Thank you HART4FLOON and Darkamber8828 for help with this guy.

Threats

The ever common Persian lead kills my plan. With Fake Out and Taunt, it stops my Regirock in a snap. ITS ANNOYING. Then, it just U-turns out. Thats pretty much all it can really do, so thats it for him.

Purugly. Same as Persian.

Rapidash with Solar Beam. This thing is friggin' unstoppable. It can't be stopped except with Tauros and normally they have a counter for him.

Floatzel leads. I originally took it off because I didn't it much of a threat any more. I didn't realize that it still was. It can taunt me and then start sweeping my team with Ice Punch and Waterfall.

Conclusion

Well thats it. There's my Sunny Day NU team. The Pokemon I'm most likely to change are Gligar and Tauros. I would like to have a Stealth Rocker still. Please give any criticism you think is right. Also, please keep in mind this is an NU team so I can only use those.

this is a pretty generic rate:

On Jumpluff replace endure with leech seed. endure isn't very useful competitively when focus sash exists.

Give Typhlosion a choice scarf because you lack a true revenge killer and to outrun basically everything in nu. use HP Grass over rock slide because 1) Rock Slide does crap damage and 2) HP Grass will hit bulky waters like Quagsire and Politoed

There are literally almost no flying/dragon types in NU that Victreebel can't easily beat with its dual STABs. Run HP Fire over HP Ice, mainly for other grass types but you also get the boost from sunny day.

Use LO over choice band on tauros because the power loss isnt very noticeable and tauros benefits a lot from the ability to switch moves. Iron head provides pathetic coverage. Use return/frustration over it. Never ever ever ever use outrage on a non-dragon type pokemon. STAB return/double-edge do more damage anyway. use earthquake>outrage

not completely done yet though as i'm scouting for a good replacement for gligar

Weather Ball>>>Sludge Bomb>>>>>>>>>>>Toxic on Vbel

Use Memento in Jumpluff's last slot, Endure is shit.

Scarf Typhlosion.

A Haunter can come in on the latter half of your team, Substitute, and kill something. Recommending LO Skuntank.

If you do use Tauros, use Earthquake over Iron Head, which is worthless in coverage, and Pursuit over Outrage for Haunter.

Recommending Sunny Day over Stone Edge and Heat Rock over Leftovers, it's a support pokemon on a Sunny Day team, it should have Sunny Day.

I think I will use weather ball over HP Ice for the 100 BP Fire move in sun with a 50% boost making it a solid 150 attack (lemmie know if i'm wrong)

Memento over Endure, i didn't like it anyways

Typhlosion will get a scarf although i don't trust focus blast with only 70 acc and i'll try HP grass over rock slide.

i'll change item on tauros, band was getting a little annoyed with it anyways lol also i'm changing its moveset like you have suggested

Recommending Sunny Day over Stone Edge and Heat Rock over Leftovers, it's a support pokemon on a Sunny Day team, it should have Sunny Day.
Who were you talking about here?

and one last thing Darkamber, who would skuntank replace? and what type of moveset does he use.

sprite.php

Jumpluff @ Heat Rock
Chlorphyll
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 128 HP / 128 Atk / 252 Spe
- Sleep Powder
- Sunny Day
- U-turn
- Memento

1st of all use aromatherapy or encore over memento

157.png

Typhlosion @ Choice Scarf
Blaze
Nature: Modest
Evs: 252 Spe / 252 SpAtk / 4 SpDef
- Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- HP Grass

he's fine

victreebel.png

Victreebel @ Life Orb
Chlorophyll
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Spe / 252 SpAtk
- Solar Beam
- Sludge Bomb
- Weather Ball
- Toxic

Try sleep powder over toxic. FUnd something that walls you? SLEEP POWDER! After this hes fine.

sprite.php

Slowking @ Heat Rock
Own Tempo
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpDef
- Sunny Day
- Slack Off
- Surf
- Psychic

Flamethrower over surf or use fire blast! Boosted by the sun and some good satk is nice. Or even try grass knot to smack quagsire in the face.

sprite.php

Gligar @ Leftovers
Hyper Cutter
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Roost
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

try 252 hp, 252spd and 4 hp
-taunt
-roost
-toxic
-stealth rock
Jr Gliscor anyone?

sprite.php

Tauros @ Life Orb
Intimate
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Double-Edge
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

A life orb double edge is hurting him. use return, he'll live longer this way!

I like your Slowking set, but here's one that I use on my Sunny Day teams that you could try using.
80.png

Slowbro
Item: Leftovers/Life orb
Nature: Modest for offense, Calm for defense.
Moves:
Flamethrower/Fire Blast - Those grass types that like to pick on water types will surely burn beneath the cleansing fire of the pink behemoth. In the sun, you can easily make up for a lack of STAB.
Sunny Day - He's bulky enough to pull it off, and few people expect it, so you have little chance of being taunted.
Surf - Not only is it STAB, if helps with sand and rain teams, as described below.
Psychic/Slack Off - It's a STAB attack that you can use in any weather condition. If you want more bulk, go with Slack Off.
EVs: 252 SpA, 212 HP, 44 Def. The 212 HP allows Slowbro to heal up after two seismic tosses with ease. If you don't use Slack Off, go with 252 SpA, 252 HP, 4 Def.

Why: When rain teams come a'callin, fire types beware. When fire types flee in terror from the hazards of the rain, Slowbro charges in, STAB water attack at the ready to slay those who do not resist it. In the case of a water type Pokemon on the opposing team, Slowbro resists its STAB attacks and can counter with a Sunny Day or Psychic depending on the circumstances. Sandstorm teams are a hassle as well, especially considering that Hippotas can summon an infinite sandstorm. With a STAB water attack, though, you can slay them with ease. Hail teams are annoying too, even if less common. A quick flamethrower or fire blast will end the threat fairly quickly though, especially if it's a Snover. After dealing with the weather's source, Sunny Day can restore your team's momentum.

199.png

Slowking: Hidden Lunatic
Item: Same as above
Nature: Same as above
Moves: Same as above
EVs: Same as above

Why: It's like Slowbro, but with different stats. They both learn all the moves in the set, so just pick whichever one you need. Slowbro is more physically defensive, Slowking is more specially inclined.

IF u haven't noticed, its a NU RMT and slowbro is obviously a UU mon.

Hey man, great team you have there. Never been a fan of the ol' Sun team, but Rain Dance is right up my ally, so I hope I can help.

Firstly, Jumpluff, looks fine but I'd strongly recommend Encore > Memento. Why? Jumpluff shouldn't be a suicide lead in my opinion, as it is able to prevent Entry Hazards with Sleep Powder and Encore, this would open up a lot of possibilities to safely switch in unharmed, return the Sun and regain momentum. Encore is also very useful in preventing opponents stalling out your Sunlight with Substitute or Protect. I'd also recommend 252 HP, I mean honestly, U-turn wouldn't be doing a lot of damage to anything no matter how much EVs you invest. It's used as a away of escape, not a full on attack deserving of any EVs.

Next, Typhlosion, looks good, again. But, I have to suggest this set.
157.png

Typhlosion@ Salac Berry
Blaze
12 HP / 252 SpA / 240 Spe
Timid
- Sunny Day
- Substitute
- Flamethrower
- Solar Beam

This set is actually Godly under the Sun, and it has the ability to set up Sunlight making it a desired member of your team. 12 HP EVs allows Salac Berry and Baze to be activated after only 3 Substitutes or, 2 after SR damage.

For Victreebel, I'd switch it up for Physical variant, or a Shiftry. You already have your Special sweeper, who is walled hard by Slowking and Regice.
275.png

Shiftry @ Life Orb
Chlorophyll
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Seed Bomb
- Low Kick
This handles Regice, Slowking, and any other Special Walls that come in to ruin your fun. You can opt for a Special variant, but it has no respectable niches. But, if you do decide to keep Victreebel, I highly suggest Sleep Powder to buy you off some extra time to pummel, or a free turn to bring in a Sun provider.

I'd definitely opt for Ice Beam on Slowking, Surfs power is lowered heavily in the Sun, and as it is a Sun producer, it seems redundant.

As for Gligar, I'd can it and replace it with a Regirock, as Regirock has fantastic synergy with the rest of your team and can provide a study Physical and Special wall, if it comes to it. Regirock can also provide Sun support and he benefits from the Sun surprisingly, seeing as how Water-type attacks are nerfed, giving it a lot more walling opportunities, such as Politoed or Mantine, those with weaker Water-type attacks with little to no investment.

377.png

Regirock @ Heat Rock
Clear Body
252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful
- Sunny Day
- Stealth Rocks
- Rock Slide / Stone Edge
- Earthquake / Toxic / Explosion

To be honest, if you stuck Sunny Day and a Heat Rock on Gligar it could fill the same role, arguably better as it has a reliable recovery move and doesn't perish from the loss of leftovers.

Now onto threats. When the Sun isn't present Hitmonchan will cause a lot of problems, with a combination of Ice Punch, ThunderPunch, Close Combat and Mach Punch, if it is Scarfed, it will cause a lot of problems for your team. It can even live a SolarBeam by Victreebel due to its natural SpD bulky. It isn't a common or immediate threat, but over time it can be problematic and slowly wear down your team.

Well, this is a fantastic team and I wish you the best with your team. Good luck, sir.

Try sleep powder over toxic. FUnd something that walls you? SLEEP POWDER! After this hes fine.

The only problem I have with this is Jumpluff already sleeps them. If I sleep them with Victreebel it will activate the sleep clause and I'm DQ'd

Changing Slowking's Surf to Flamethrower

Changing Gligar to Regirock

Changing Tauros's Double-Edge to Return

Changing Typhlosion's HP Grass to Solar Beam
Changing Jumpluff's EVs to 252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 SpDef

Your problems are easily solved if you lead with Regirock instead of the generic Jumpluff lead. Regirock can set up the Sun turn 1, take a Waterfall, set up Stealth Rocks, take another Waterfall as it is weakened due to the Sun, switch out to Victreebel and proceed from there. No one is killed but you get the Sun up. For this you might want to shift 160 EVs into Defence so you can guarantee taking 3 Waterfalls.

This is why I advised Grass Knot on Slowking as he is the perfect counter to Rain teams. Plus, it's essential for a Bulky Water to be able to properly deal with other Bulky Waters.

Tauros deals with Camperupt, plus it's easy to play around with Jumpluff, Slowking and Regirock as if it is LO it'll be worn down and reached simple OHKO range for Slowking.

Why don't you use Sleep Powder on Victreebel? I haven't seen much use for Toxic as most Weather teams hit hard, fast and don't really attempt to wear down a nuisance. The free turn generated by Sleep Powder will allow you to ease a prediction while also allowing you to bring in another Sun provider, or just use Sleep Powder to immobilize a counter.
