The Khodzant Enigma

Bleh, intro's. Well, this is my first post on smogon and I came here for the sole purpose to figure out how well I'm doing in the competitive scene. I've been playing Pokemon seriously for about two months or so and this is my favorite team that I've build so far. The team has a wifi record of about 22-2 but I'm looking to improve that record (those two losses still haunt me.) I have two major problems I want to get help with:

Major Problems:

  • I have no resistances to Rock. This means none of them resist Stealth Rock and one is specially weak to it. I'm not willing to get a Rapid Spinner but Toxic Spikes are a definate pain. My lead checks Entry Hazards somewhat though.
  • A well playing Life Orb Jolteon can really give me some problems. This problem is even worse when played with Scizor.
Oh yeah, the title's named after this piece of homework I had. Interesting fact of the day woo-hoo.

As you can see by the glance, I have two resistences to everything but Dragon and Rock. I don't think it's that bad, but Flygon can be a pain as well as MixMence because all I can do is revenge kill it or suprise it with Heatran. Anywho, here's the team

Breloom@Choice Scarf
4 Hp / 252 Attack / 252 Speed
Jolly Nature
-Seed Bomb
-Spore
-Stone Edge
-Superpower

Originally, I had Choice Scarf Roserade in this spot but I find Breloom doing a better job. Spore, as opposed to Sleep Powder, will never miss which is a huge advantage. Seed Bomb is STAB and is great for beating those Focus Sash leads who try to Taunt or Stealth rock on the first turn, like Azelf or Aerodactyl. Stone Edge is my best bet to to revenge kill Salamence and beat Gyarados. Funnily enough, the team that centered around a Dragon Dance Tyranitar sweep was amazingly weak to Dragon Dance Tyranitar itself. With Breloom and his Superpower, this is no longer an issue. The reason Breloom found himself in my team was because I needed something that could prevent Entry Hazards from being set up so that my team could switch freely. He doesn't always accomplish this, but prevents from being up about 80% of the time.

Heatran@Shuca Berry
4 Hp / 252 Special Attack / 252 Speed
Naive Nature
-Fire Blast
-Stealth Rock
-Earthpower
-Explosion

I find Shuca Tran a big improvement from the Scarf Tran I used to have in this slot.
Heatran gives me an almost guarenteed Stealth Rocks up which is incredibley helpful for Tyranitar and Gengar somewhat.
Heatran gives me a second way to deal with Mixmence because he can survive the initial Earthquake and then explode as long as I haven't been Intimidated yet. I'm sure you know that Scarf Jirachi is a major pain to Tyranitar and Heatran just loves switching into any of it's moves.

Zapdos@Leftovers
252 Hp / 224 Special Defense / 36 Speed
Calm Nature
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power [Grass]
-Toxic
-Roost

Zapdos is the best Scizor check ever (Interesting fact of tomorrow woo-hoo.) If Gengar and Suicune fail to beat Scizor for some reason, Zapdos will always be there to beat it. I'm using the Specially Defense Zapdos from the Smogon set because I needed something who could clear those bulky waters from Tyranitar's way without taking too much damage from their Ice Beams and such. Toxic helps wear down these bulky waters like Vaporeon and Swampert while Zapdos can hit 'pure' waters like Vaporeon with Thunderbolt. Toxic and Roost work perfectly in tandem; keep building up Toxic damage and heal with Roost every other turn. Hidden Power [Grass] helps me with my Swampert problem while I still have the ability to beat back Scizor with Thunderbolt and still be able to Toxic other bulky waters that Tyranitar could possibley struggle against.

245.png

Suicune@Leftovers
252 Hp / 252 Defense / 6 Special Defense
Bold Nature
-Surf
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Calm Mind

Using this over my previous, SubCm Suicune for a couple good reasons. It's a better way of tackling Blissey and I've just noticed this, the only Pokemon here who can afford to take a Thunder Wave. The reason this thing tackles Blissey so much better than SubCM did was that Tyranitar's Sandsteam made it a bit pressing for Suicune to get five substitutes to set up. Kind of counter productive there. If Suicune gets low on HP while setting up Calm Mind's, he can just Rest off the damage or status problems. Naturally, Vaporeon is a huge problem to this but Zapdos covers it pretty well and Breloom allows pretty much anyone to deal with it after it's put to sleep.

Gengar@Life Orb

4 Hp / 252 Special Attack / 252 Speed
Timid Nature
-Shadow Ball
-Protect
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power [Fire]

Scofield's Gengar ftw. I used to have Sub Gengar to lure out and defeat Scizor's before, but I find this works a hella lot better. If the Scizor Bullet Punch's, I get a free Substitue with Suicune and if he Pursuits, He eats a face full of Fire. Gengar helps me deal with Lucario who tends to be a problem to everyone >_>. Protect also helps me scout out Choice Users making a move so I know what to switch into. Scofield's Gengar ftw.

248.png

Tyranitar@Leftovers
4 Hp / 252 Attack / 252 Speed
Adamant Nature
-Stone Edge
-Crunch
-Dragon Dance
-Fire Punch

Tyranitar is the true star of this show. Since every other Tyranitar you see now is a Choice Bander, Dragon Dance Tyranitar has been neglected as a threat. which I've taken advantage of. After one Dragon Dance, Stone Edge wrecks most Pokemon that don't resist it. Fire Punch can take any straggling Steel types that would wall me otherwise and if I can nail a Scizor on the switch, that's not too shabby either. The item however, is my real trouble. Although I've been enjoying Leftovers recovery, with Life Orb I can 2KO Swampert after a Dragon Dance with Crunch, while with Leftovers I must rely on a defense drop or prior damage. I'm currently questioning whether Fire Punch is worth the slot or if I should replace it with Earthquake.

Thanks in advance for the rates. Also, excuse me for the English, it's not that great.

Currently Testing~

Substitute over Heat Wave on Zapdos

Crocune over SubCM Cune [Done]

Hidden Power [Grass] over Heat Wave on Zapdos [Done]

Not a bad team, but I suggest running Leftovers over Life orb on Gengar to recover Hp, plus Hidden Power Fire is mainly for Scizor so add a few Defense ev's to handle a Bullet Punch. Also instead of Heat Wave run Substitute. You can still counter scizor since mainly all of it's moves are not effective and Thunderbolt does a good amount. Plus Sub-Roost is very effective to PP stall.

Thanks rain, that fair yesterday was awfully boring ._.

I need Life Orb on Gengar to get the OHKO on Salamence after SR Damage so I think that's a no on that suggestion...

I'll test out Substitute, thanks for the rate.

I've been looking at this team for a few days, and I just can't see how Suicune can use any of its potential with no leftovers recovery (sandstorm nullifies it). With Sandstorm up, you'll be able to get 4 substitutes max--not very good. Also before I get into this, no Blissey can wall Suicune thanks to Pressure and Calm Mind (and rest *hint*). Ok, so now you have basically a nerfed SubSuicune thanks to sandstorm, and since Tyranitar is the main focus of the team, we need to change Suicune's set to better fit this team. Mainly, what I really want you to use is a Crocune with the moves Surf, Calm Mind, Rest, and Sleep Talk/Ice Beam with the same evs and item. Since this is wifi (I believe you said something about that in your post), it actually would be ok to use Ice Beam over Sleep Talk, not only for the Perfect Coverage in OU besides Water-types bar Swampert and Gyarados, but for the things you need it to do, i.e. checking several Dragon-types. Suicune as a crocune does subcunes job better for many reasons, one is it being able to rest off status instead of preventing it with Substitute, and it being able to work with Tyranitar and Sandstorm and getting 6 Calm Minds usually results in gg anyway.

Just one more thing I notice is Swampert giving you a bit of trouble. It can only really wall Tyranitar and Heatran, but with Tyranitar being the centerpiece of the team, we should atleast have another check to it and a way to get rid of it quickly. One thing you can do is throw HP-Grass on either Heatran or Zapdos (preferably Zapdos) and give your opponent a surprise OHKO on his beloved Swampert, freeing up his team for a Dragon Dance Tyranitar sweep. The rest of the team looks very good.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the rate Joshe :D

I'm going to take you up on that suggestion for Crocune and for that Swampert weakness...would that justify putting Life Orb over Leftovers on Tyranitar? And yeah I can get an Hp Grass Zapdos over my current because I know I have one somewhere. Thanks for the rate

Correct me if i'm wrong and i'll edit this post, but i believe you meant Life Orb or lefties on tyranitar and not swampert :x. If so, keep lefties and basically the same items for the whole team. I personally like either Leftovers or Babiri Berry, but since most of your team takes out Scizor anyway so leftovers is the best choice.
