ORAS UU The Lobster and the Dragon (Balanced UU Team)

So.....Crawdaunt is now UU legal, and this awesome monster which I've always liked is actually viable in a tier (Let's face it, OU was way to rough for the Lobster). In fact, I'd say Crawdaunt is more than just viable in UU. It is a force to be reckoned with. Another thing I like about Crawdaunt is how well it pairs with one of my favourite Megas, Mega Sceptile. That is what this team revolves around, simply put. The team has been doing fairly well in testing, however it has been struggling a little in certain areas, and against certain Pokemon, so any help that can be offered, I would greatly appreciate.

Crawdaunt (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Knock Off

Crawdaunt is a powerful monster in UU that, while some may feel like is too powerful, I can safely say I have no problem having it in UU. This set is the classic SD set, as Dragon Dance, wile flashy and nice, just doesn't provide Crawdaunt with enough speed after only one boost, which alone cane be hard to get. With, with Swords Dance boosting Crawdaunt's attack by two, plus Adaptability, Crawdaunt becomes a powerful Wallbreaker, and even late game cleaner (early-mid game if your opponent isn't prepared). Aqua Jet provides Craw with much appreciated and needed priority as its speed, as mentioned before, is quite poor.

Waterfall provides with more powerful Water STAB for slower, but bulkier targets. Knock provides Dark STAB in situations much like Waterfall, however for those Pokemon like Suicune who resist Waterfall (And who wouldn't want to get rid of those pesky leftovers?) Both moves can also be used for switches as well of course, and will hurt even unboosted thanks to the combination of Adaptability and Life Orb.

Sceptile (M) @ Sceptilite
Ability: Overgrow
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Giga Drain
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast

Ok, I know what you are going to say. This is only the second Pokemon on the team, and its already another Fairy weakness. But hear me out here. Sceptile contrasts Crawdaunt quite nicely. It is a fast special sweeper, resists Crawdaunt's Grass weakness, is completely immune to its electric weakness once Mega Evolved, and while Crawdaunt really shouldn't be switching into any attacks, it can at least come in on Ice Shard and threaten out the common users in the tier.

Ok, onto the set itself now. I've experimented with M-Sceptile since it was released. I've tried a purely physical set, a mixed set, and multiple Special Sets. This set seems to work well at least. Substitute provides additional protection against most attacks, and is incredibly handy when predicting a switch. Giga Drain over Leaf simply because I would rather not have my Special Attack drop like a rock, but Giga Drain allows me to get back that delicious HP after a Sub.

Dragon Pulse is the second STAB move of choice, providing Sceptile wit the strongest STAB option of this set. Focus Blast provides decent coverage against Steel types like Mega Aggron, and doing decent damage to Umbreon.

Chandelure (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
- Trick

Chandelure has to be my favourite Scarfer in the Tier, as it finds its way onto most of my teams. And who can blame me with that design, and awesome typing? Anyway, I digress. Chandelure is a decent option for Choice Scarf, with powerful STAB options like Fire Blast and Shadow Ball to throw at slower weakened mons. And hey, with Flash Fire, a Fire immunity is always nice to have.

Energy Ball provides nice coverage against the like of Swampert, as well as other Pokemon that may not mind the Shadow Ball or Fire Blast. For the final slot, we have Trick, which can screw up Set-up Mons and Walls alike.

Forretress @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Volt Switch
- Gyro Ball

Forretress is here for a few reason. Not only does it give more purpose for Chandelure to be here (You know how allergic poor Forretress is to Fire), but it also provides the Team with access Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin support. The EV spread makes Forretress a great physical wall, with just a little leftover attack to get a slight kick out of Gyro Ball, while Volt Switch provides a slow switch into other members, something that Crawdaunt really appreciates. Over all, Forretress is a decent member of team, and I honestly don't have much more to say.

Roserade (F) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Synthesis
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb

Roserade is a pretty cool Pokemon, though I don't have much experience with using it. However, to my surprise I found out that Roserade is actually pretty bulky on the Special side, and since I needed another Fairy check (Forretress isn't reliable in that regard) I decided to make a Specially Defensive Roserade.

A second set of Hazards is always nice to have, especially when those Hazards are Toxic Spikes. There aren't many Pokemon in the tier that appreciate the combination of Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rocks, and it s nice having the option, even if I can't get them up all the time. Synthesis provides reliable recovery for Roserade, increasing its longevity, and even allowing me to Toxic Stall if I want to (I really don't though). Giga Drain, much like for Sceptile, provides Roserade with STAB that can also recover it, and Sludge Bomb allows Roserade to hit Fairy types for some decent damage. Natural Cure is also great to keep Roserade healthy, especially with Black Sludge, and 16 EVs in Speed allow Roserade to outspeed base 60 Speed tier with neutral Speed Natures if they are running Max Speed.

tornadus_the_wind_waker_by_tamarinfrog-d6o35ne.png

Tornadus @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Acrobatics
- Rest
- Superpower

I'm gonna be honest....I was never really sold on the idea of Tornadus being on the team. It doesn't exactly do a lot, and while it can be fairly threatening, it doesn't exactly have a spot on the team. The only reason I put it on here was I was struggling for a last team member, and a friend of mine suggested this set.

The set itself is pretty nice. Get up a Bulk-up or two quickly thanks to Prankster, Rest off any damage or Status effects it is afflicted with, pop the Chesto Berry, and then use a boosted Acrobatics to sweep. Superpower provides nice coverage against types that resist Acrobatics. Honestly....there isn't much more I can say about this Pokemon at this point.

So that is the team! Like I said, it has been working fairly well, however two issues have cropped up. First off, it my Ice weakness. I have a total of three Pokemon, half my team, that is weak to Ice. Sure Chandelure and Forretress resist ice, and because of that I haven't had a big problem with it. However, a surprising problem I have come across is Zapdos. The team really struggles against Zapdos, especially with HP Ice. I can eventually win against it, but not without incurring a loss or two, so help is really appreciated on this matter.

There's one thing that I've noticed from your team, a lack of Hydreigon switch-ins. I suppose you could call Roserade a switch-in against the likes of Dark Pulse, but Fire Blast blows it away like Breaking Benjamin.

252 SpA Hydreigon Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Roserade: 320-378 (191.6 - 226.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

I don't really want to change any Pokemon so I'll suggest this. Consider Memento > Trick or Energy Ball. With the reduced offensive capabilities Hydreigon is like a wolf with no teeth. This can allow you to either switch into Tornadus for the easiest setup of your life or switch in Sceptile or even Crawdaunt (because it's a god damn savage) to revenge kill it.

First off, love the Breaking Benjamin refrence.

I'll be sure to try that out. Any suggestions for my Zapdos problem though?

Hi there.

Forretress and Roserade stick out on this otherwise offensive team. They sink all momentum and invite a plethora of threats that you lack switch ins to since your 4 other teamslots are offensive and are not meant to switch into wallbreakers. Roserade also stacks weaknesses due to shared typing with Sceptile and reduced coverage to offensively deal with walls. Replacing these with more offensive mons that allow you to cover more threats will help alleviate some of your weaknesses.

Speaking of weaknesses, I currently see a big weakness to Fire types, especially since 90% of the time they pack a coverage move to smack Chandy, and they come in on Forry and Rose easily. M-Aero also gets a kill each time it comes in once Forry is weakened enough which shouldn't be too hard due to the amount of roles its absorbing. Other threats include Mega Beedrill, Dragons, Zapdos with HP Ice (as you noted), Flying types, and CM Florges (defensive Rose loses to it at +1).

I see two possibilities to alleviate these weaknesses: go full on Spike stack offense and rely on hazards and sheer power to pressure the aforementioned threats, or if you are not comfortable with that type of team, then we can make a balance team that supports a Sceptile sweep. I also have some suggestions to help tweak some sets and make them more efficient for the team. I apologize in advance if this post becomes confusing.

Route 1: Spike Stack Offense

So Mega Sceptile is pretty nasty with Spike support, but the problem is keeping Spikes up with all the tier's defoggers and spinners. Chandelure already serves as a spinblocker, although it only counters Forry as a spinner (you can still throw Chandy at Stoise/Tenta/Donphan if you want to be 100% sure hazards stay even if it dies). We will need Taunt support to block Defog and ways to punish Defog if they opt to click it. So, let's first tweak some sets to give us such support (all sets will be provided at the bottom):

LO Chandelure with Pain Split and Taunt. > Choice Scarf Chandy. Taunt shuts down slower Defogger such as Empoleon and Mandibuzz, while also demolishing fatter builds to deny recovery from bulky mons. This also beats or at least cripples CM Florges which helps with this weakness and opens up for Sceptile to clean. Pain Split is a cool surprise to recover if they send out a healthy special wall like Florges/Umby to finish off a weakened Chandy. The loss of Speed sucks, but Sceptile and Torn ensure you aren't too slow + you have priority.

Defiant All Out Attacking Tornadus > Bulk Up Tornadus. This is a cool way to punish Defog since Defiant gives you a free Swords Dance if they Defog on Tornadus. At +2, Torn becomes nearly impossible to switch into due to its powerful STAB and great coverage. A set of Acrobatics/U-Turn/Heat Wave/Grass Knot hits the majority of the tier hard besides Ampharos, Zapdos, and Rotom-H. Grass Knot over Knock Off since you do not want Crawdaunt's Knock Off to do less damage on something. OHKOing Swampert and crippling Mamo and Cune is also excellent for offensive teams.
OR

Life Orb Taunt Tornadus > Bulk Up Tornadus.
Instead of abusing Defiant to punish Defog, you utilize Prankster Taunt to shut it down. This helps if you accidentally let Zapdos in on Torn, which then freely Defogs on you. You also get access to Tailwind to let you outspeed Aero and co that terrorize offense. The downsides to this set is that you have to rely on Hurricane as Flying STAB, but guaranteed Defog suppressant is so nice and Tailwind as insurance for fast threats.

Now for swapping teamslots. We have been hyping up Spikes, but who's gonna provide them? The best Spiker on Offense is Froslass by far, so my next suggestion will be:

Focus Sash Froslass > Roserade. Frosslass is the most reliable Spiker in the tier due to Ghost typing to spin block, fast Taunt, Icy Wind to cripple faster Defoggers, and Destiny Bond to get a kill. Be wary when you see an Absol or Sableye, since they both shut down Lass completely. Roserade, as mentioned before, is too passive, and the offensive sets struggle mightily against blocking Mandibuzz and Crobat. Finally, we come to our final change:

SR Mamoswine > Forretress. You get a powerful Rocker thats has many opportunities to Rock up since it forces so many switches. It beats 99% of defoggers too, losing only to Shuca Empoleon. Ice Shard also checks Aero and Dragons which are always menacing for offense. You could also try SR Swampert in this slot. Swampert is a good partner for Lass since it gives Rocks and can spam Roar to rack up damage. With Pert, you also get a much more reliable Entei check, Aero check, and you can block Volt Switch from Ampharos, although it isn't too common. Swampert + Sceptile should wall all Zapdos variants as well, except Specs Zapdos, which is forced to predict. This change, however, opens up a weakness to Mega Sceptile and is Defog bait for anything besides Emp.

And that's it for Route 1! You may be hesitant to make these since there is no hazard removal, and that's ok! Route 2 will provide hazard removal at the expense of less offensive pressure.

Route 2: Balance

If you choose this option, we will keep Forretress since we really need the role compression in hazard removal and setting in one teamslot, and we also get an Aero counter which every Sceptile team needs, and a Mamo check, which again, every Sceptile team needs. Roserade, however, will be swapped, and Tornadus too (will be explained later).

With hazards dealt with, we can focus on dealing with Sceptiles biggest revenge killers and defensive threats. We need a way to stop Scarf Dragons and opposing Sceptiles, which not only threaten Sceptile, but the rest of your team. Furthermore, ScarfShao and Sharpedo revenge Sceptile easily. A change of CM Florges > Roserade checks all of these, as well as sets up on that pesky Zapdos. While this core is standard, it is very effective and you have a powerful Steel-Dragon-Fairy core.

Tornadus is looking replaceable, because as you said, it really is not doing much for the team. It doesn't help another member sweep, it doesn't wallbreak for teammates, and it doesn't defensively check any threats to your team. Fires currently come in on our defensive core, and they all usually carry coverage moves to bop Chandy. We we also want to maintain our Ground immunity, so I recommend Gyarados > Tornadus. Gyarados + Mega Sceptile is becoming really popular with Sceptile to eat those Electric attacks that Gyara lures to get a +1 SpA boost, and with Gyara's typing and natural bulk, it blanket checks a lot of threats like the aforementioned Fires, Mamo, Krookodile, Fighting types, and more. I am thinking a Physically Defensive RestTalk set with phasing would fit best to be self sustaining when checking these threats, and being able to phase physical threats in a pinch due to Intimidate is always incredibly handy in a physically dominated meta.

My last suggestion is a set change on Chandelure. With Mega Sceptile being just 1 point faster, having Scarf Chandy seems redundant since Sceptile can revenge most things Chandelure can. Changing the set is by no means urgent, since having another way to kill Taunt Crobat is always nice for Scep, but try Leftovers Taunt + Will-O Chandelure > Scarf Chandelure. This set lures in some of Sceptile's checks and cripples them, including but not limited to: P2, Florges, Snorlax, Mandibuzz, and Scarf Hydreigon, which again, makes it easier for Sceptile to sweep. If you choose to run this, you might want to run Flame Body or Infiltrator > Flash Fire just to avoid P2 from hardwalling this set.

Lastly, no matter what route you choose, you should swap Leaf Storm > Substitute on Mega Sceptile. You really need that 130 BP STAB to be threatening, since Dragon Pulse and Giga simply aren't cutting it. Sub doesn't help with anything either except dodging Scald burns and avoiding the revenge from priority, but the benefits of Leaf Storm outweigh the small benefits of sub.

Oh, and for every special attacker, you should set Attack IVs to 0 to minimize Foul Play damage. Just a small tweak but it can end up saving you in some situations.

That's it! I hope my changes helped and good luck with the team!

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
