The Monster and The Frog (Gyarados meets Rainstall).

25tj8nl.png

Long time ago, in a very far away land…

The rain empire ruled the pokémon world under the unbreakable kingdom of Lord Politoed (who had the power of creating infinite rain), and it´s powerfull warriors. Together they formed an amazing team that wrecked every single other team that represented an obstacle on their way.

Something that good couldn´t stay for long, because the sheer offensive and defensive power of mega evolutions this generation and the new battle mechanics broke the chains between powerfull Pokémon and the Uber Olympus, and also awoke sleeping monsters from underworld…

The anger of new Pokémon and their ambition to take the king out of the throne affected the powers of the Great Frog, who lost it´s ability to create infinite rain and was locked deep in the lower realms.

Now Politoed, alone, starts his journey back into the now more powerful OU metagame, hoping to reclaim it´s kingdom… or die battling.

In it´s voyage, our hero will find new companions and will rise at arms with a new army, eliminating everything in his race to the top, with the help of dragons, a prince, sea monsters, warriors of spiky armors and impenetrable tanks, bringing them rain in exchange for victory.

...

This is an example of the evolution of rain teams that ruled Gen 5 OU.

After a lot of research and investigation, I decided to build a rain stall to use in generation 6, mainly because of the stalliness efectivity increased in the metagame and all the great Pokémon that could be used in many successful combinations to counter the way we play right now.
Teambuilding process:

Well I wanted to start with politoed + manaphy to have two good rain users.

Then I added some other Pokémon to complement them, such as chansey (superb special wall), ferrothorn (a really great deffensive pokémon in the rain), quagsire (an amazing wall) and a mega gyarados (a mega that works pretty well with or withouth rain).

I was very weak to hazards in that point so I replaced chansey with latias (to have a good defogger with pasable special defense).

Latias (not enough SDef) wasn´t working as good as I would have liked to, it made me weaker and it was so easy to lure, so I included again chansey (as it´s bulkier) and switched ferrothorn to skarmory (to keep defogging hazards away).

At this point the team was really good, but I was being easily countered by Pokémon like azumarill and keldeo, so I finally replaced manaphy (a great rain sweeper) with amoonguss (a great wall that could solve my problems). In that point i had the final team:

Politoed

Lots of people before me have said “there´s no rain withouth politoed”, and I didn´t want to use the classical bulky set because I found it less usefull in this generation than the last one, due to the weather nerf. Scarfed politoed is the set that fits the best in my opinion to gen 6 mechanics, using the few turns of rain to boost himself, being allowed to hit very hard a lot of fast sweepers.

The EVs are 252 on attack and speed for maximum speed and power and 4 on hp to make it able to survive a little bit more.

Hydro Pump hits very hard in rain, Ice Beam can hit some grass and dragon types. Focus blast is used to hit steel type Pokémon like Ferrothorn. Perish Song is good for finishing with Pokémon that I can´t hit and force switches.

Skarmory

This pokemon is one of the best physical walls in the metagame. It´s excellent typing is helped by the rain while it has good synergy with the other members of the team (Specially with Quagsire).

Skarmory is vital for the team because it defogs, sets up SR and has an amazing roost+counter+sturdy combo that is able to stand and strike the most of physical sweeper with great power, making the team able to KO powerfull opposing mons.

It´s specialized on defogging and then setting up stealth rock, something very important for the team because it damages a lot the very common flying types like Talonflame and Charizard while also leaving threats like with enough health to be knocked out with politoed while gradually damages opposing walls.

I use it with full hp and defense to ensure maximum survivability.

Quagsire

Another of the strongest physical walls in the current generation, this Pokémon has become my savior many times because of it´s amazing ability to nullify stat changes when taking and receiving damage, so it can easily take the task of countering threats like Charizard x, Bisharp, Physical Aegislash, Tyraintar and many others.

This guy has an amazing synergy with Skarmory and between the two they form a very efficient defensive core capable of standing nearly every form of physical attacks. This set uses Toxic to inflict indirect damage, Scald to attack fire types having good damage under the rain and also a probability to cause a burn. Earthquake hits for super effective damage a lot of common Pokémon in the tier, while Recover lets Quagsire to regain the lost health.

I use a standard defensive set with full HP and Def, which lets Quagsire stand a lot of hits and remain on the match for a long time.

Chansey

I actually have two great physical walls, so I needed to have a special one and I considered that Chansey was my best choice because of it´s great potential when wish passing, using heal bell to avoid status and taking down teams with seismic toss.

Eviolite powers up it´s defenses and is one of the main things that make this pokemon one of the greater tanks in the Pokémon world. This one checks a broad range of special attackers that are very common in the current metagame.

I run a pretty standard and usefull combination of 252 EV´s in HP and Def that helps it a little bit to tank physical attacks if needed.

Amoonguss

In this point I had a very bulky wall trio, but I was easily finished by things like keldeo and sometimes azumarill, Pokémon that could use the rain that politoed causes and strike very hard to the members of the team.

Amoonguss was my best option in this case, mainly because of his advantageous typing against the after mentioned Pokémon and it´s ability to recover health while switching, two things that make it a great pivot for the team.

Clear Smog is used to stop baton pass teams (A very popular sector of metagame in the last times) and dangerous set up sweepers or walls, Giga Drain recovers health while causing SE damage to some threats. Spore can make sleep almost anything dangerous and Foul Play to strike some strong physical attackers that switch in (If sleep clause is activated or you don´t want to use Spore).

Gyarados

This is my mega because of it´s incredibly powerfull STAB waterfall under the rain, also it´s great typing, abilities and the freedom to set up in a bunch of common Pokémon makes this Pokémon a true sea monster.

Waterfall is an amazing stab move that hits very hard, Ice Fang and Earthquake are for coverage to grass, dragon and steel, electric, respectively. Dragon dance is used to boost Gyarados inmense stats to even higher levels.

You can run 224 EV´s in spd, 88 in HP and 192 in Atk to outspeed Noivern at +1 (based in Masterclass´s bulky set).

This looks like a very solid semi-stall team, however I'm not sure 1 rain setter is really enough. I do suggest changing Politoed to a Spdef set (Max/Max HP/Spdef, same moveset) to deal with charizard Y, giving a much better switch into him and still maintaining good power off of rain boosted attacks. Perhaps Scald > Hydro Pump would work better to give burns, making amoongus a better wall to possible AV azumarill (who wouldn't mind switching into a rain boosted hydro pump).

I also might go max defense skarmory, as I'm not sure what the standard EV spread outspeeds anymore. Calm nature on Chansey gives over 20 more evs (even sacrificing a little physical bulk).

The only foreseeable problem I see is mawile sub punching because Skarm has no taunt. Mega heracross could be an issue but it is fairly rare.

Thanks for your rate, Aj! :D
I´m testing the changes you suggested.
When i was trying SDef Politoed the team became a little bit more weak to ferro (the team is still able to play arround it, but that could become an annoying problem), is there a better way to counter it in the rain?

To be honest, probably HP Fire > Clear smog on Amoongus. The Sub is going to be up and you'll probably not get much chance to kill it... Going to Gyara-m and starting to dragon dance (might even add taunt over ice fang) could be a fantastic way to balance that out.
