XY OU The return of the Strong Winds [XY OU]

-THE RETURN OF THE STRONG WINDS-

Vendaval.jpg

Hi people, I´ve made this team 4 weeks ago when I was thinkng about testing the Tornadus-Therian form in XY OU that was so succesfull in BW2, reaching the Uber tier. I though of adding it into a rain team with Choice specs Politoed and I based the team in this two pokemon.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Swords Dance

We started strong. Take a look on this unusual set of this freaking monster and think about 5 minutes, then you lose the match. I selected Landorus-T subSD set because of the power he gets after a SD behind a substitute, which he sets up very easily against walls like Hippowdon and Heatran and he can set up in front of the face of Aegislash (outspeeding it) and other physical attackers thanks to Intimidate.

Politoed @ Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Focus Blast
- Ice Beam
- Surf
Politoed is the pokemon that sets up Rain in order to help Tornadus-T to spam Hurricanes. I selected Choice specs for killing easily other mons that set up weather. Hydro pump is the most powerful STAB move of Politoed, which under the rain hits like a truck. Focus Blast for these annoying Ferrothorns and other steels, Ice Beam basically for Dragons and Grass-type pokemon that resists Hydropumps and finally Surf for better accuracy but less power than HP, which helps Politoed achieve OHKOs and 2HKOs against Pokemon such as Garchomp and Scizor.

Manectric-Mega @ Manectite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass]
M-Manectric allows me to deal with other Water-Type (unless Rotom-W) pokemon that can simply create problems on my team. He outspeeds max spd Keldeo, Talonflame, Greninja and other faster pokemon, which is a great advantage for my team. Volt switch for scout, Thunderbolt as main STAB, Overheat helps me when there isn´t rain against steel and grass-type pokemon, like Ferrothorn,Excadrill or Aegislash and finally I selected HP Grass for those Quagsire and Gastrodon that cripple M-Manectric.

Quagsire_by_DrManiacal.png

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Toxic
- Curse
- Earthquake
- Recover
Here we have the anti-booster pokemon. Quagsire can easily wall things like Scizor and Talonflame and set up Curses in order to gain a huge Defense and Attack and make him bulkier. I use Toxic for other walls, Fly-type pokemon and Dragons that can´t be touched with Earthquake, which I prefer over Waterfall for steels like Bisharp and Aegislash.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 184 Def / 68 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

Here´s my SpDef wall and Stealth Rock user. Ferrothorn allows me to have the synergy with the rest of the team and gives the correct resistances the team need. It also resist the Dragon-type mons which completely destroys my team if isn´t Ferrothorn alive and walls Water-type things like Greninja, Rotom, Gyarados, etc. Ferrothorn is capable of taking care Electric moves which also is a weakness in Rain teams.

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Sludge Wave/Knock Off
- Superpower
- U-turn
Finally, the star of the team. Tornadus-T was one of the most powerful pokemons in BW2 OU, until it got to its ban. The devastating power of Hurricane with Life Orb allows me to spam grass and fighting mons. Sludge Wave is for the Fairy-Type pokemon, which I had no other way of beating them unless Ferrothorn, U-turn for scout and Superpower completing Tornadus-T`s coverage, hitting Heatran and Tyranitar, who resist both Hurricane and Sludge Wave, while for SpDef walls like Chansey or Blissey. Knock off can be used for Jirachi and threatening some Steel users and some Mega pokemon.

Conclusion

This is the team, so I hope you liked it and thanks for you help. I´m sorry for my awful english grammar and expresion, I hope you can understand all well.

Edward Newgate.

Wow, your team is really solid, I like the idea of Lando-T and Torn-T bit I'm not exactly keen on Overheat on Manectric. Specially Defensive Ferrothorn becomes a great trouble late-game especially when the rain is up, and I also suggest Knock Off over Sludge Wave but you may have a point against Azumarill. Also, you may want to consider that Tornadus has more power than Tornadus-T. But other than that, awesome team.

Hello Edward Whitebeard Newgate, I am here to rate your team. I don't usually rate teams in this fashion but as I am changing at least one thing on every Pokemon and I'm sure this is the easiest way. First off I'm not sure how this is a rain team tbh. While Ferrothorn and Tornadus certainly benefit from rain and both make good partners to Politoed, you have no rain abusers or Pokemon that actually rely on the rain. Really just a Politoed offense team (sounds weird af, but no other way to put it).
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers --> Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe --> 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature --> Jolly Nature

- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Substitute --> U-turn
- Swords Dance --> Knock Off

This set is cool and innovative, but less optimal than other, more standard sets. For one you have almost no reason to run a bulky spread when you have something like Ferrothorn on your team. This is mainly an offensive team and you have no Choice Scarf user yet so Choice Scarf just works better, helps you checks Pokemon like Greninja, Keldeo, and Mega Manectric who all do work against this team. U-turn helps grab momentum for teammates or for predicting switches from your opponent. Knock Off is a really great move this gen, helps to stall break a bit, and is generally a safe thing to lock yourself into as most things don't want to have their item knocked off.
Politoed @ Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Focus Blast
- Ice Beam
- Surf

Politoed @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature
- Toxic / Hypnosis
- Scald
- Protect
- Encore

As cool as Choice Specs Politoed is, it was 10x better last gen as rain was permanent. The standard defensive Politoed with Damp Rock is a much better teammate than your previous set. It doesn't hit nearly as hard, but lives a ton more hits, provides team support in longer rain, a physical wall, an anti lead and can inflict status to a number of its check or counters.
Manectric-Mega @ Manectite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass] --> Hidden Power [Ice]

Small change here, but one for the better. The only relevant thing you'll be using HP Grass with and not Thunderbolt is Quagsire, but when you have a Tornadus-Therian and a Ferrothorn you don't have to worry about it. Ice allows you to hit much more prevalent things like Landorus, Garchomp, and Dragonite.
Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Toxic
- Curse
- Earthquake
- Recover

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance / Low Kick

The biggest change to the team, but a necessary one nonetheless. Quagsire is really not a good choice for offensive teams, really redundant now, and loses you all the momentum you build up with Mega Manectric, Landorus-Therian, and Tornadus-Therian. Kabutops offers you a way to abuse rain, is frail but finds numerous safe switch ins by U-turn and Volt Switch. It also gives you a win condition if you played it right and eliminated all of the things struggles with.
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 184 Def / 68 SpD --> 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Atk
Sassy Nature --> Careful Nature

IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball / Protect
- Power Whip

You have a physically defensive Politoed (assuming you made the changes) and so there was little reason to have this be mixed. Try running specially defensive set and see how it plays for you. Keldeos Secret Sword will hurt more now, but you honestly shouldn't be staying in a Keldeo any way ?_? Protect is slashed next to Gyro Ball because with Leech Seed and Leftovers, you gain quite a bit of health recovery. With Protect, you are ensured two turns of recovery and you can scout out other pokes. If you make this change you might consider putting all Ferrothorn's IVs back into speed.
Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe (252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spe)
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Sludge Wave / Knock Off / Heat Wave
- Superpower / Focus Blast
- U-turn

Not understanding why you have Sludge Wave on here at all. All the common Fairies are hurt quite badly by Life Orb Hurricane and so are Grass type Pokemon. Focus Blast is an alternative to Superpower and Heat Wave can be used over Knock Off although you have to be wary about missing and about not using Fire type moves in the rain. Focus Blast will hit harder based on investment and stats, but is less reliable. You also don't run the risk of needing to 2HKO something but are unable to because your attack dropped. Another thing was changing your EV spread to 252 Atk 4 / SAtk / 252 Spe if you plan on running three physical attacks.
Hope I helped!

Hmm I'd like to say having Scarf Landorus-T and Tornadus-T isn't exactly optimal, they both pretty much spam U-turn early-game and in general wear down their counters in an offensive pivoting fashion. You said it helps with Greninja and Keldeo but Tornadus-T deals with Keldeo and Mega Manectric with both, so you aren't exactly revenge killing them which you couldn't do before. Agreeing with Damp Rock Toed and Kabutops, however it seems optimal for your Landorus-T to change to some sort of special Water-type, which would do well against the checks and counters of Kabutops and also wallbreak early game making it much easier for Kabutops and Tornadus-T to clean up afterwards. You have quite a few choices, such as Choice Specs Kingdra, Expert Belt Keldeo, Choice Specs Omastar, or even something more unconventional if you so choose (Greninja, Seismitoad, Keldeo). With Ferrothorn in the rain, Mega Manectric shouldn't be problematic.

Quagsire and Ferrothorn really kill any momentum your team has and I would definitely replace Quagsire. Quagsire may be able to boost itself with curse but it takes a while before it can actually get set up and any sort of status cripples it. It becomes a liability at that point and toxic/burns are way too common for you to risk using that set on an offensive team.

I would second Nog's suggestion of adding a Kabutops over quagsire and put low kick as your fourth slot.

Although Ferrothorn stops you from pressuring your opponent, it is somewhat of a necessity as you have no answers to azumarill on this team. Not sure on the spread though. you have intimidate landorus and ferrothorn's grass/steel typing for most physical mons so the Def EVs may not be necessary. you should probably just go max max spdef or possibly through in some attack evs to deal good damage with your two attacks.

Lastly, I would give landorus a minimum of 104 Speed EVs to outspeed neutral nature base 70s and + speed ttar so you dont get bopped by Ice beam before you're even given a chance to move.
