From the people who brought you Carousel of Pain comes a new Volt-Turn team aimed at smashing the UU meta

With the UU Beta out and me slowly growing tired with the current state of OU I decided to branch out into the fledgling tier. However with every pokemon on my old team except for Crobat and M-Manectric banned I had to star completely anew. Originally I tried to swap out Rotom-W for Lanturn and run a boot leg version of CoP's core, only to find it just wasn't effective.

So I started over and built a new Volt-Turn team entirely from scratch, a team which stuck true to the original's dedication to speed and power while also adapting to the Meta-Game. In some ways this team has even improved upon the idea of the original, as 2/3rds of the team have abilities which trigger when switching out or in. U-turn becomes a much more impressive move when it comes with the side effects of healing your Pokemon for 33% of its health and lowering the opponent's attack one stage. The resulting combination of offense and utility make for an unpredictable team which smashes through opponents with ease.

This team is divided into 3 cores: The Shock Core, Disruption Core and Bulk Core
  • Shock Core: Designed to scout, to hit hard and fast and to revenge kill.

  • Disruption Core: Designed to cripple enemy pokemon.

  • Bulk Core: Designed to sponge hits and shelter the rest of the team from harm.

THE RAGTAG CREW:

Azelf_Extrasensory-1-.png

Fusebox Poet (Azelf) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Ice Punch
- Explosion
- Trick
Shock Core
As captain of the shock core Azelf is usually my lead. Its fast U-turn ensures that it can outspeed almost anything in the tier and allows me to counter nearly and lead pokemon they throw at me. Scarfed mons deal with Arcanine or Tornadus while hazard layers contend with Xatu. Since most relevant scarfers in the tier are at or under 100 base speed, I'm able to get away with using an Adamant nature at him as it allows him to outspeed them by one crucial point. Ice Punch grants coverage, Trick deals with clerics while explosion deals with everything else, OHKOing a very large chunk of pokemon in the tier while conserving momentum.

MC CAW!!! (Tornadus-Therian) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 76 SDef / 180 Spd
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Superpower
- Air Slash
Shock Core, Disrupt Core, Bulk Core

The incomparable star of the team, AV Tornadus descends from the heavens in order to reduce opposing teams to rubble. Assault Vest allows him to tank even Keldeo's hydro pump and Regenerator means as long as rocks are kept off the field he's nearly immortal. I went with Physical>Special despite his fantastic special movepool for the sheer utility offered by U-turn and Knock Off, the latter of which no one ever sees coming and tears through Latias, Slowbro and Metagross among others. Superpower deals with mons like Bisharp who think they can come in and deal free damage with Sucker Punch. Air Slash helps deal with Heracross, Scrafty and all the other fighting types.

EP774_Mienshao_en_trance.png

Mienshao @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Fake Out
- Poison Jab
- High Jump Kick

Shock Core
Mienshao is the final member of the Shock Core and easily the hardest hitting, Mienshao punches holes which no other pokemon dare to punch. Poison Jab handily deals with fairys, HJK destroys anything which doesn't resist it and U-turn/Fake Out is a tried and true combo which whittles down enemies. Mienshao's role is simple, but it doesn't need complicated, if it can be wrecked Mienshao will wreck it.

AG141.jpg

Xatu @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Foul Play/Grass Knot
- Psychic
- U-turn

Disrupt Core
Xatu is a very shy bird and doesn't come out very often, he only does so under very specific circumstances. Xatu is a pretty weak mon, but this team needs his special mojo too badly to let him be cut. Xatu is my main line of defense against hazard setters, and to be honest I love the feeling of scoring a successful magic bounce. While Latias is now available as a defogger it's natural predator Bisharp is just around the corner (although HP Fighting Latias might just work...), plus defog is a pretty big momentum killer and it gives the opponent an effectively free turn. Roost is to keep Xatu alive, U-turn for momentum and Psychic hits Poison pokemon like Nidoking while Foul Play/Grass knot grant coverage.

Naomi's_Lanturn.png

Lanturn @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
- Rest
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Heal Bell
Bulk Core
One of the better special walls in the Tier, Lanturn's role is that of the team sponge. He takes hits other pokemon, including Tornadus-T, couldn't. His typing also gives him great defensive synergy with Tornadus, granting him a lot of free switch-in opportunities in order to snag Regenerator/Volt Absorb benefits. Despite not yet being a named man Lanturn completely dedicates himself to helping the team, Scald helps spread burn, Volt Switch lets him sponge a blow and safely ferry in a teammate, while Heal Bell is self explanatory. ChestoResto isn't fantastic but its his only source of recovery outside of Volt Absorb.

Tucker_Arcanine.png

Stacks (Arcanine) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Morning Sun
- Extreme Speed
- Flare Blitz
Disruption Core, Bulk Core
Arcanine has been the surprise MVP of this fledgling team, when Azlef U-turns on turn 1 he's who I switch into 90% of the time. Between Intimidate, Morning Sun and Will-O-Wisp Arcanine can field any manner of neutral physical threats and then hit back with Flare Blitz. Extreme Speed doesn't hit very hard but makes him a fantastic Revenge killer and helps him wear down stuff like Fake-Out Ambipom before they can U-turn away. His raw power and endurance shouldn't be underestimated, and a Flare Blitz coming off him can do a considerable amount of damage to common switch-ins like Hydreigon and Darmanitan.

Change your lanturn to this spread: 40 HP / 252 Def / 216 SDef, you get almost the same special defense and a great amound of physical defense.
