The Street Fighter IV Thread!

So, SFIV was supposed to release YESTERDAY, but Capcom was all "lol let's ship it on release day" so most stores didn't get it until today.

Overall, the game seems pretty good. Sagat is the only S tier character, with Ryu, Akuma, and a couple others at A tier, and Ken being B tier. Sadly, Chun Li is only C or D tier (I forget exactly) and Cammy is D tier. Dan (of course) is the worst character in the game.

As far as I've played, I love Sagat and Ken. If you are really into SF, I highly suggest getting one of the custom SF controllers or fight sticks, because they make playing the game so much better.

Post your thoughts on the game so far!

ps: It's a great game. At a first glance, I'd give it an A-. I'll be back once I play all characters and such.

pps: Sadly, I still think Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike are better.

Note: I know there is a general SF thread, thus I made this one specifically for this game, not others.

How the hell can we tell what tier anyone is so soon after release? (And I don't mean one day, I mean so many months since the arcade version came out.)

First time picking up Street Fighter again since 2 way back when, but I got the collectors edition of 4.

Sadly I main the worst character in the game: Vega. He's too awesome to pass up though. I had hoped the console versions would give him some buffs, but sadly his speed is still greatly reduced, he has lowish defense, low attack power, nerfed range, and I have no idea why they're still keeping the bullshit gimmick of having him lose his shit still, but he loses them much faster this time around.

Still, I wouldn't exactly call him bottom of bottom like most people say. He is at least better so far than Dhalsim and Chun-Li so far from my experience, and MAYBE better than El Fuerte (BIG maybe. So far I still think Fuerte is overall better though. Depends on if the infinte was taken out). But there's no way he's making it out of bottom. There's just too much going against him. Shame because he's such a badass character.

On the top side, Viper and Geif are broken shit, fuck Sagat (he's undeniably good though, but I tend to have a easier time with him than the other two). None of Viper's special shit is punishable: her fire kick pushes you back a mile on block, her thunder fist, when properly spaced, goes too far for you to punish and has nuts priority on top of that, and her ground explosion comes out on like frame 3. Her Ultra is some of the easiest shit to do (as opposed to Vega, who has the hardest tied with Guile since they have the same motions) and combos out of fucking normal attacks. And on top of all this, she has no charge...for ANY of her moves, so she can spam them all as she pleases. Fuck Viper.

Geif...what can I say about him. Let me give you this brief scenario: he beat out my crouching medium punch (which has great priority, even outside of just Vega) WHILE IT WAS OUT (as in, already sticking in his leg), with his SPD. Seriously, that shit comes out on the -5th frame. I don't even see the big asshole do ANYTHING. One moment he's standing there, the next I have a facefull of burly Russian nuts in my beautiful face. Also his green palm goes half the distance of the fucking screen and is extremely fast to come out, especially the EX version. Also his tornado shit renders any jump ins useless. The best way you're doing anything is to stay the fuck away from him, but when he's such a fucking fat shit and he can cover stupid distances with just one attack, that's easier said than done (unless you have a fireball).

THAT BEING SAID, I still love the game to bits, and I'm planning to low tier my way up to the top. I still have a long way to go, but this game will definetly keep me interested for a long while. I would ask for any tips from more experienced Vega players, however I know no one else here is crazy enough to attempt to main the supposed worst character in the game (Dan is actually pretty good now btw), so looks like I'm just going to be the one to blaze this trail.

Also, alot of people are complaining about Seth as the final boss, but I find him as a whole much less broken than Viper/Geif. His Shoryuken is broke shit though. That's about it.

HELL FUCKIN YEA! Got this last night and have played it as nonstop as I could since. Funny, Gief was the first guy I tried and turns out he's a beast! I have this weird way of picking broken characters before they're deemed broken...but yea SPD is nuts this time around, haven't gotten around to the frame data yet, but from the practice I've been able to do so far, it's got retarded range and startup.

Haven't been able to play as Viper yet, I'll keep an eye out for what you said, or maybe be the first of my playgroup to bring out Viper. Rufus doesn't seem too bad either, at least from first glance (haven't kept up on vids until recently since I came across a cheap 360 deal).

Gonna try out some Boxer next chance I get, he still seems like a solid mid, maybe a bit higher, and probably still fun as hell to use.

wtf Capcom when we see the return of Hopkick???

The guide book actually lists the tentative tiers. Someone on another forum who's allegedly responsible for contributing to the book said something along the lines of: "I know the tiers haven't really developed, but I just wanted to give newer players a grasp of how the competitive scene handles the game."

The guide book tiers are horribly inaccurate. I've been playing the game for months and I'd say this is by far the most balanced Street Fighter to date. With the exception of Claw, everyone is very playable (this is without the console exclusive characters though)

Trusting the guide book tiers is like trusting the Prima Pokemon strategy guides to tell you what's good.

Just throwing it out there, but the guide book for Anniversary Collection had articles from veteran players like John Choi and Alex Valle. Apparently this one is nowhere near as good, though, so obviously it's not always the case for SF games.

How is the online for the PS3 version, anyways?

Even Claw is playable imo, but it is an unbelievably uphill battle and he is still no doubt one of the worst, if not the worst character (besides all the characters I mentioned, after having recently unlocked Cammy, she is definitely a viable contender for bottom along with them and Vega, but even she could probably be used well).

Having said that, I agree with the general premise that this SF is very balanced. Geif is still a homo though.

anyone know if El Fuerte still has his infinite?

<3 El Fuerte

COOKING TIME BITCHES

If I get a chance to play tomorrow (work + maybe Quinnydinny's house tomorrow), that'll be the first thing I try. I'm interested to see if El Fuerte has his infinite too.

It depends on how much you're willing to spend. The Hori EX2 is a decent low level entry stick. If you want something better though, you're probably looking at a custom stick of at least a Hori Real Arcade Pro EX

The cheapest arcade stick I've found was 80 bucks. I just went out and got my Ken Street Fighter IV controller so I could have my 6 buttons on top :)
I get my D pad AND my 3 fingers on the 6 attack buttons. The best of both worlds.

I play Abel like no one's business. Something about him just draws me to him. If I don't play Abel, I'm usually Ken or Fei Long. I've yet to play Gouken or Akuma yet, though.

You can make a good stick for pretty cheap. The most expensive components are probably the box to house it in, and the scavenged Xbox 360 controller board (if you're using a 360), and you can get broken controllers for not that much.

Buttons and the stick itself are pretty cheap.

Well I want a stick since it makes the game easier to play. The SFIV controller sounds like a good idea though, and it is a much cheaper option. I may pick one up if I ever get the game.

Funny enough, they've made the controls forgiving enough to work on the 360 controller that you may end up executing dragon punches when you don't intend to (though some motions like Guile/Vega's Super are still respond inconsistently).

Anyone expecting Capcom to release a Street Fighter 4 Turbo Fighting 2nd Impact anytime in the future, or is that all gone in the days of DLC? It would seem impractical to implement new characters, tweaks, and, yeah, better music, all through downloads and I don't see Capcom turning down the opportunity to milk for more easy cash.

This game is ill as hell. Not counting playing at my friend's, I've only logged about 5 or 6 hours since last night, but I'm having a bitch of a time unlocking Gouken. I think I've found a reliable source, it says I need two perfect rounds and three ultra finishes... can someone confirm this? I managed to pull that off twice only to lose at Seth, I just don't want to spend anymore time getting frustrated only to find out that isn't how you do it.

Is anyone else feeling the soundtrack? I thought the opening theme was pretty queer when I first watched it on YouTube, but eh, once you boot up the game it just sort of grows on you.

If anyone owns the PS3 version, hit me up on PSN: my gamertag is ill_as_duck.

I've heard that is is infinitely easier with a Joystick.

They already are: Street Fighter 4 Championship Edition. I'd fetch you a link myself but I just got back from C3 and I need some Zs. I'll find it tomorrow if assed.

I unlocked Gouken (on PS3) by getting 1 perfect and 3 ultra finishes in the first four matches. I set the matches to one round per match, easiest difficulty. Just use a character you're familiar with and it's a piece of cake, but if you lose once you'll have to start over.

Is anyone tired of the endless (BAN ME PLEASE)s who play Ken? I swear, I've played over 20 hours on XBox Live, and 80% of my matches have been Ken. I played 1 Dhalsim (which was a really good Dhalsim), 3 Abels (I play mostly Abel, because no one else uses him), a handful of M. Bison, 5 Blanka (yes, it seems ridiculous, but I remembered how many I played for most other characters), and a lot of Ryu (most people play him like a bitch Hadoken spammer), Akuma (lol @ defense), and Sagat (best character in the game). I maybe played 1 El Fuerte, 1 Rufus, a few Zangief, but really, about ~190 of my 250+ Live matches were Ken, and it gets old.

While I'm on Ken, let me add that his Ultra's hitbox is stupid, and hits when it doesn't appear that it should. I don't like that his Shoryuken (or anyone's Shoryuken, for that matter) will hit me even if it is only my foot during a crouching kick, or that he can Shoryuken while laying on the ground.

K, I didn't want this to turn into a "this stuff sucks" post, so I will say I enjoy playing a character no one else really plays, so that getting perfects and whatnot make me feel that much better. I got a double perfect on a Ken, grabbing his jump-ins with Abel's air grab, rolling behind his specials with the roll and grabbing or punch comboing, and repeating the process. He was pissed!
